Chicken Wings.....no, they where embryonic, anorexic chicklets.
I was in Dublin for a week long vacation from the states. All of a sudden, my "wings-urge" hit me.
I googled/read several "best wings in Dublin" reviews. "Elephants & Castle" came up on many of the searches....in many cases, rated #1, and by chance it was only 1 mile from our hotel.
With much excitement (for me anyway) my wife and I walked down to EC for some wings on a Tuesday evening. When we arrived, we were told it would be 2 hours...this only built up my excitement.
When 745 rolled around we (mainly me) showed up with great excited for the "world renowned wings."
Service was quick and my wings were on the table in no time.
I was was pleased with the number of wings (about 2 dozen) but as for size...lol, some of these were so small I would take a bite with my front two teeth and all the meat was gone.
My advice to EC, cut down on the number of wings, increase the meat on them-seriously, this are too small even for a leprechaun to eat.
Texture: They were crispy, as expected, the smallest of the batch were super crispy as I believe, due to their size, were "crispified" in the deep fryer.
Spice: I like my wings wet,(and HOT) (Wings & Rings makes a prefect "wet" wing IMO) so I asked for an extra side of hot-sauce.
I have my reasons, but I like to dip my wings in more sauce in the beginning and as the heat builts up in my mouth, stop dipping into the additional hot-sauce and dip into blue cheese.
The wings seemed to have no sauce on them what so ever...?? My wife even asked if there was any sauce "included." I would have said, "No," however there was a puddle of separated butter and sauce at the bottom of my basket.-which had virtually no flavor.-just an oily grease residue.
I then went to plan B, dunking the wings in the additional side of sauce. FINALLY some flavor, I would not call it "hot," more of a "medium," but that is just my opinion. The sauce was rich. Seems to be a franks red hot, butter and oil mixture.
That side of sauce was gone within about 10wings...they were so busy so I didn't bother the waiters to ask for another.
Celery: Two long stalks, a few more would have been appropriate, however with no "heat" to quench, it was a mute issue.
Blue Cheese: Beside the fact the the wings were the size of silver dollars, the bleu cheese was the #2 biggest disappointment. It was extremely watery and contained no chunks of cheese. I have to believe this is watered down or mixed with ranch.
I have had other bleu cheese dressings out here and none were like this, it was runnier than ketchup. If you were to knock over the dish, the cheese would have spilled to the edge of the table and dripped on the floor like water.
Maybe I am just used to the bleu cheese at BWW and WingsNRings....but with most of these you could hold the dish upside and the cheese wouldn't move. I like a thick creamy base with chunks of flavorful cheese.
Overall not impressed, in fact because of the reviews that "hyped" it up, I walked a way very disappointed.
Size: 0/5 -I don't think you could find smaller wings without aborting pre-mature chickens and harvesting their mini-wings.
Texture: 3.5/5-the standard
Flavor: 2/5 -sauce on the wings was flavorless, the side had some good flavor....too much butter and oil IMO, not enough flavor
Celery 3.5/5- only 2 stalks.....good length, but not enough
Bleu Cheese: 0/5- and absolute watery joke
I wish my review was different, as I was looking forward to this "best in Dublin" experience.
After proof reading my review( I am sure there are still plenty of errors), I thought to myself, I don't think that I have had worse wings than these. Not to sound harsh, but it is true....BWW, Applebee's, wings N Rings....and dare I even say it Dimineos and Pizza Hut are all better.
I am guessing ownership, cooks or something has changed since the rave reviews.... read more
