Tea-flavored duck
Eric I.

We came here for our anniversary dinner, having read positive reviews for Elements. Euro-Asian - interesting! It's a relatively smaller restaurant and seems to be family run, with friendly staff and good service. Big wine enclosure, a separate bar area. We started out with the quail appetizer, which was a little disappointing. The quail seemed overcooked, which I'd imagine is easy to do with such a small bird, but both the cook and flavor were nothing to write home about. Just too dry. I'm not one who loves to deal with the difficulty of eating something small with minimal meat, but am more than willing to if it's prepared well and tastes great, but this didn't meet either mark. I think a closer to correct cook would have helped a lot. However, the other dishes were very good. The tea flavored duck was prepared VERY well, nice cook and delicately flavored. Liked this one a lot. Some taro there as well for carb/starch lovers - also good. I would definitely order this again. The Salmon Wellington was overall good - I think it could have been a bit more seasoned, but overall, we still enjoyed it. I'd likely not order this again, not because it wasn't good, but I'd want to try other dishes on the menu. The mango panna cotta was overall good. Not special, but solid. We'd come back here again. Nice people, good food, interesting menu.

My husband and I came here for dinner last night a little before 6pm without making a reservation. We got seated right away. While the restaurant was quite busy by the time we left, it wasn't completely full. Decor was modern and comfortable; nothing fancy, but they did have a cool wine storage area surrounded by glasses in the middle. Since they mentioned on their online menu that there's a longer prep time for the Salmon Wellington, we placed an order of it as soon as we sat down while deciding what else to order. For starter, we split the Five Spice Rotisserie Quails. They're quite flavorful, just a bit on the dry side. The Salmon Wellington and Tea-Smoke Duck arrived shortly after we finished the quails and washed our hands. The presentation of the dishes was fantastic. While the puff pastry could be cooked a bit more and the salmon could use more seasonings, the salmon was well cooked, the sauce was quite delicious and the dish was just so beautiful. The duck dish had a very nice smoky aroma, the taro and cranberry reduction was delicious. While the fresh apple slices provided a nice crunch, I would prefer some kind of apple compote. We ended our meal with a mango panna cotta. While the panna cotta was quite thick and not as soft and wobbly as what we're used to, it's still very enjoyable together with the mango sauce, and the plating was top-notch. Service was friendly. Our water was refilled promptly. Complimentary bread was nice and warm. Despite its unassuming store front, and in the middle of nowhere location, Elements offers real bang for the buck delicious fusion dishes with interesting combinations and flavors. Can't wait to come back and try other items on their menu.

Do not let the ther appearance fool you. Nestled in the Almaden Center shopping mall, Elements Restaurant might appear unassuming from the outside. However, once you step inside, you're greeted with an amazing dining experience that far surpasses initial impressions. Ambiance and Decor: The interior is modern and tastefully designed, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A standout feature is the glass wine cellar situated at the center of the restaurant, adding a touch of elegance. Even the restrooms are impeccably clean--a detail that reflects the establishment's commitment to excellence. Cuisine and Menu: While the menu isn't vast, it offers a wide range of options catering to every taste and dietary requirement. The appetizers are generously portioned, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. We started with the Vegetarian Spring Rolls, which included two rolls cut in half--each half the size of a full spring roll at other restaurants. Served with a well-crafted hoisin peanut sauce, the portion was so ample that we took half of it home. The Quails Appetizer was a delightful surprise, arriving as a substantial serving that resembled a main dish. The quail was expertly prepared with a mild teriyaki glaze and accompanied by a fresh side salad. Both appetizers set a high standard for the rest of the meal. For the main course, we ordered the Combination Vermicelli with Prawns and Egg Roll, requesting prawns only. The dish came in a large bowl with a side sauce and was abundant with prawns--enough to satisfy two diners. The highlight was the Salmon Wellington. Presented beautifully, the salmon was wrapped in spinach and encased in crispy puff pastry, resting on a bed of delicious lemon beurre sauce and asparagus. Words can't do justice to how amazing this dish was; we found ourselves using the fresh bread to savor every last bit of the sauce. Again, the portion was generous enough for two. Wine List: The wine list is very good and the prices are very reasonable. Service and Experience: From our seating area, we could view the kitchen through a large window, watching the owner chef work his magic. The service was impeccable throughout the evening. We personally thanked the chef for the incredible experience. Conclusion: The combination of superb service, excellent presentation, inviting ambiance, and reasonable prices made for an unforgettable dining experience. I only wish we had discovered Elements Restaurant sooner. It's perfect for a romantic dinner or special occasion, yet the pricing makes it suitable for any day of the week. Great place for bringing friends and family. I strongly recommend that you visit this amazing gem--don't wait! Note: They also offer an extensive take-away menu, which is even larger than their dine-in selection.

Food is plated nicely and the interior was surprisingly upscale considering the location. The ambiance feels like this restaurant is a place to go for special occasions or to treat yourself. Service is friendly and attentive and they filled up our waters often. The standout of the night was the scallops and prawns! The scallops are cooked perfectly and tender

We came here during the 4th July week and it was really nice to try a Vietnamese French place after a long time. The service was great. It was not busy given that this was a long weekend and most people were probably out of town. The ambience was nice - contemporary and neat. I ordered their soup special which was Butternut Squash (for $15 it was very expensive according to me). We also got the sea bass and salmon that came with a lot of vegetables which was great. The sea bass was very well cooked with the right flavors and presentation was great. The herb crusted salmon was overcooked a bit and it lost its tenderness. It was presented well, came with mashed potatoes and veggies. We didn't order any drinks this time but happy to come back again and enjoy some French wines.

i made a reservation for a birthday dinner here. it was a nice restaurant. this restaurant is a vietnamese-french cuisine. it's nice that it has the infusion of both cuisines. the chef took food that was french and incorporated vietnamese ingredients into it. every item on the menu looked delicious so it was hard to choose from, so we had to ask for the waitresses recommendation. we ended up with all of her recommendations actually. by the way she was super nice and super friendly. made our time at the restaurant lovely! sorry we didn't get your name! as for the food. we ended up ordering, element pho, scallop seafood dish, pad thai, meat loaf and salmon wellington. the portion size is pretty big in my opinion, but if you are hungry, you can surely eat it all. this restaurant is located in a plaza and has a few good seating areas. even though we had a reservation, we were seated pretty quickly.

Our first time here and we loved it! We tried the seafood selection tonight. We ordered the salmon wellington, chef's special sea bass, and the scallops and prawns. For dessert we tried the triple chocolate mousse, lemoncello, mango pano cotta, and of course, the lava cake! All were so delicious!!! We're definitely going to go back to try their meat dishes next time . The service was great and the chef was very nice! He came out from the kitchen and thanked us for coming in.

Quiet, not too busy on Saturday night, well lit so even though it's a nice place I'm not struggling to walk and tripping all over myself. Decorated nicely for a date night or special occasion. Soft shell crab was very tasty, not too dry and not too much batter. Papaya salad was not too acidic but the prawn is just 2 at the top instead of mixed in the salad just FYI. I had cravings for scallop and was not disappointed, the sauce was just right amount of creamy and savory. Great flavor and cooked just right. My husband has the smoked duck and was cooked right but the flavor is a little too sweet to our liking but not their fault just not what we would get again for our taste. All and all great service and good value for a special occasion, you get good amount of food!

Excellent soup with chicken wontons. NOT chicken AND wontons.
Brian K.

Nice and pleasantly surprised to find such a nice (and expensive) restaurant located in a somewhat sleepy Safeway plaza in Almaden area. French style with Asian flavors. Service was excellent and friendly. Tried calamari, chicken "and" wonton soup (not), seabass, shrimp / scallops risotto and their salmon Wellington. All dishes were excellent, the soup which was described as chicken and wonton soup was spectacular only there was no chicken other than what was inside the wonton. It should be chicken wonton and not chicken "and" wonton. Broth had a nice mouthfeel and flavor to it. Wontons soft and pillowy. Lots of fresh veggies. The seabass was also a star. Fish was good portion, perfectly cooked with a nice coating and flavorful curry sauce. Risotto with shrimp and scallops dish, while not a traditional Italian style risotto, was still excellent and the seafood perfectly executed and flavorful. Salmon Wellington was interesting, with a nice pastry puff shell covering a nicely and large piece of freshly cooked salmon. All dishes were served with nice portions of fresh vegetables. I will definitely return!!

Wine cellar at Elements

Had our holiday company dinner this year at Elements after trying it one night just before they closed. It's in a strip mall off of Almaden in South San Jose. But once you walk inside, it feels classy with a big glass wine cellar to the right, and an open kitchen towards the back. The restaurant is family-owned and operated. The chef and his father both work there, with possibly more family working other positions. It was packed with patrons on a Friday night. Their fusion cuisine is quite unique in that it is more French and Western than Vietnamese. So there are dishes such as Salmon Wellington that you would never see at a Vietnamese restaurant. For appetizers we ordered fried softshell crab, spring rolls and green salad. All solid in terms of taste and freshness. For entrees, each person at our table ordered a different dish. I ordered the Salmon Wellington, which was nicely breaded, in a plate of cream. There was a thick cheese inside the breading surrounding the perfectly cooked salmon. I tried the Australian rack of lamb, also well cooked and seasoned. The desserts were not quite on the level of the entrees. My colleagues had to chip away at the peach sorbet because it was frozen solid. The chocolate cake was spongy and tasty, but the ice cream on top was ordinary. The drink menu was somewhat of a surprise in that they didn't have any cocktails. Unsurprisingly, they had a wide variety of wine and some beer, but I had expected some creative cocktails given the food menu but I guess I didn't see a bar there. If you happen to be on the south side and want to have a unique French-Vietnamese meal, I recommend Elements.

When John's mom suggested we go here to celebrate John's dad's birthday a month ago, I was excited. We had never been and the menu intrigued me. But unfortunately the experience didn't live up to my expectations. The ladies who took care of us were wonderful. However, timing was an issue for the night including having to flag someone down to get our bill. Not to mention it was a hot day and the a/c didn't seem to be on or set low. The food was just okay. I ordered the salmon and it was good. But the spring rolls were just okay. I don't see us returning.

If you are looking for some Viet fusions food look no further. This is something that can go right or totally wrong. We tried quite a bit of the menu and our experience was that most of our dishes came out great and delicious! Here's what we ordered: Appetizers: Complementary Bread Fresh Spring Rolls: $15 (4/5) Plumped sized shrimp rolls (3 large rolls but cut in half) with a creamy peanut sauce Grill Beef on Asparagus: $16 (4/5) Asparagus with beef wrapped around it with banh hoi on top and a refreshing nuoc mam sauce (4 of them) Crispy Soft-Shell Crabs: $19 (5/5) Get this you wont be disappointed. Super crispy pieces of crab and a yummy aioli sauce Entrees: Lemongrass Crusted Seabass: $40 (3/5) This was meh, not that great so pass Tea -Smoked Duck with Lotus Root: $29 (4/5) this was really tasty. The duck wasn't gamey tasting and it was tender and a melted in your mouth Fresh Scallops and Prawns: $27 (4/5) It was a little skimpy on the shrimp (3) and scallops (3) with 3 zucchini Roasted Half Cornish Hen: $26 (5/5) This was really good, flavorful probably the best dish out of all the entrees Filet Mignon with Mushroom Sauce: $43 (3/5) Nothing that stood out on this dish. I think it was a tad over cooked though. But still tender beef smothered in a good sauce Desserts: Peach Sorbet $15 Triple Chocolate Moose Cake $15 Mango Panna Cotta $15 My favorite was the mango panna cotta. Super refreshing way to end our night! The service was great and I would go back to try other dishes!

The Element in the Room Long-running (±19 years) family-owned restaurant that's located in a nondescript strip mall in San José's Almaden Valley. Elements focus on upscale Vietnamese cooking with heavy French influences. The Good: *Reservations the old-fashioned way by calling *Crispy Soft Shell Crab app was delicious and crispy, and I loved the aioli accompaniment. *Complimentary Baguettes is a nice touch *Tea-smoked Duck was absolutely fabulous! The duck was tender and had a great smokey flavor. The taro "au gratin"--which was not really an "au gratin," but I digress--mixed with the spinach, cranberry reduction, and smokey duck was a fabulous bite. It's really quite epic. *Carissa's Herbal (sic) Crusted Salmon was cooked perfectly, and the lemon beurre blanc sauce was terrific. *Staff was really nice and tried hard, but they got overworked and overwhelmed at one point (see below). The Meh: *Spring Rolls were just decent, and for $15, I want better than decent. Their texture was too springy, and the concomitant peanut sauce was just lacking in flavor. *Took over twenty minutes to get our check. The two poor old ladies were running around like chickens with their heads cut off once the restaurant started to fill up. It really was a clown show at one point, and I could've watched it all night--if I wasn't dying of heat exhaustion! 0_o (see below) *Need a better beer selection as all they had were macrobrews. The Ugly: *We dined in during a recent heatwave, and they must've had the AC set on 80°F or not even on because I was schvitzing like Britney Spears on Jeopardy®. I mean not just a trickle of sweat, but a full-on schvitz. I really wanted to try their dessert menu, but at that point in the evening, I just wanted to GTFOH. By saving money, they're costing themselves money. But, what do I know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Conclusion: Jekyll and Hyde experience at Elements, as on the one hand, the food overall was quite good to excellent, but the rest of the experience was passable at best. I'd be willing to give them another chance, but maybe on a cool Autumn evening, eh?

This establishment is more of a takeout place with its items made to order. The wait can be a bit long so it is best to order ahead online; the quoted pick up time was 25 minutes from the time the order was placed. For this visit I got their (net) eggroll plate and banh khot plate. The netted eggrolls had a good crispy wrapper texture and definitely tasted freshly made; the net outside made it more unique compared to typical Vietnamese and other Asian eggrolls which use a regular solid wrapper. The sweet fish sauce and veggies (pickled carrot and daikon, lettuce, cilantro, and mint) went really well with these eggrolls. The banh khot tasted good with a nice and soft yet slightly crunchy texture and each piece had a good sized shrimp on top. The banh khot also went well with the fish sauce and veggies provided. I highly recommend SJ Eggrolls for Vietnamese eggrolls and banh khot cravings. I know there are many other establishments selling these in San Jose but this place does a good job in terms of execution and price. Thien Long has been one of those nostalgic restaurants for my wife and me. We've been coming here…read morefor years, and whenever we're craving Vietnamese food other than pho, this is one of our go-to places. It's local, the food has always been good to excellent, and there are some fond memories that keep bringing us back. We came here again on a Sunday evening around 8:15pm, just before closing. Here's my updated review. Food (4 stars) * Shaking Beef (4.5 stars) - This is our kids' usual order, and they love it! The beef was cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice char on the outside while remaining tender and juicy inside. The marinade has a subtle sweetness that really complements the beef. It comes with mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. You can choose white rice or tomato rice, but my kids prefer white rice. The portion is generous enough for both kids to share, and there's even enough rice left for me! * Half & Half Turmeric Fish and Grilled Pork (4 stars) - This is one of our longtime favorites. You get the best of both worlds with their signature turmeric fish and flavorful grilled pork. The fish is consistently good, served over a bed of onions and fresh green herbs. The pork is thinly sliced and can be a little dry from cooking, but it's well seasoned and flavorful. Once you wrap everything together with the vermicelli, herbs, and vegetables in rice paper, the dryness becomes almost unnoticeable. They give you plenty of rice paper and vermicelli noodles, so you won't leave hungry. I just wish they were a little more generous with the fresh vegetables on the side. That's more of a personal preference than a complaint. * Fried Flour Cake with Egg (3.5 stars) - We ordered this as our appetizer. It's good, but not the best version I've had. The flour cake is surrounded by quite a bit of egg, making it feel more like a flour cake omelet than the traditional dish I'm used to. The accompanying dipping sauce has a nice sweet and tangy flavor that brings everything together. It's enjoyable, just not particularly memorable compared to some of the better versions I've tried elsewhere. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) * We arrived fairly close to closing time. There were only a handful of customers left, and eventually we were the last table. The staff started cleaning up around us, but we never felt rushed. I really appreciate restaurants that allow their customers to finish their meals comfortably, even when it's almost time to close. * One thing I'll never forget about this restaurant happened during the pandemic. My wife came here to pick up food, but at the time they were a cash-only business, and she didn't have any cash. Instead of turning her away, they simply told her to take the food and pay them the next time she came back! My wife went straight to the bank and returned with the money. What an incredible gesture of kindness and trust! It's those little things that make you remember an establishment for years. They now accept credit cards, by the way. ~ The ambiance is pretty typical of a casual Vietnamese restaurant. Nothing fancy, but comfortable enough for a family meal. You'll often see plenty of Vietnamese customers dining here, which adds to the authentic neighborhood restaurant feel.

"I TOLD YOU ABOUT THAT PLACE!!"…read more To be honest, I had no idea that my well intended text to tell one of my best friends about my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in SJ would trigger such a response from her. While she might think otherwise, I genuinely had no recollection of her apparently telling me about this place all of those years ago! Regardless, though, in the end, the joke is clearly on me because it took me so long to come here a couple of years ago. However, evidenced by the number of dishes I've ended up trying here, I'd like to think I've made up for some of that lost time! Even though they aren't far off or hidden away, it feels like Thien Long is easy to overlook, especially given how congested their complex can get. Yet, despite how busy their parking lot can get, the restaurant itself is surprisingly large, as they have a bunch of tables for groups large or small (we've never had to wait). What's more, the menu here is AWESOME. Beyond just the normal slate of appetizers, pho, noodle soups, rice plates, and vermicelli bowls, it also has a terrific selection of specialties and entrees that aren't super common. In particular, their signature Bun Cha Ca La Vong is something I've only seen at a handful of places (and pricier ones, at that). -- (#A2) CHA GIO - Fried Vietnamese Egg Rolls...$6 Probably the least impressive thing I've had here, but it was still perfectly fine. While the portion felt a little light, the filling tasted okay, the egg roll was crispy, and I liked that it wasn't all that oily. -- (#17) PHO GA DAI - Rice Noodle Soup w/ Chicken Meat and Organs...$17.95 (large) I don't know if me being sick had anything to do with it, but this really hit the spot. The soup felt so warm and homely and I love how there was a good balance and amount of chicken and noodles. -- (#31) BUN CHA HANOI - BBQ Pork & Pork Patties with Thin Noodles...$17.95 I've been on the hunt for a version of this as good as my go-to spot's in SF that closed and this is easily the best I've found so far. The pork patties are really juicy and I liked the bit of char on the BBQ pork. Plus, they sure didn't skimp on the amount of leaves or meat. -- (#36A & #36B) THIT BO XAO HANH HUONG CUON BANH TRANG (Thien Long Stir Fried Beef & Onions) & BUN CHA CA LA VONG (Grilled Fish) with Thin Noodles, Vegetables, and Rice Paper...$35.95 We saw another table get a half & half order and knew we had to do the same to try both. While the slices of beef were good, the "grilled" (fried) fish was the absolute star. Each piece was lightly breaded, well seasoned with turmeric, and very flakey. -- (#3) PHO CHIN, NAM, GAU, GAN - Rice Noodle Soup with Well Done Brisket, Flank, Plate, and Tendon...$17.50 (large) This may not have been the best I've had, but this isn't far behind. The broth is beefy and rich, yet not that fatty/greasy, and I love how the bowl came loaded with a balanced ratio of meats to noodles. -- (#32) BUN CHA CA THIT NUONG - Grilled Fish, BBQ Pork, and Vegetables with Thin Noodles...$18.95 Essentially the combination of two of my favorite Vietnamese dishes anywhere, which is perfect for when I can't decide on what to get. The only things missing are the Pork Patties and the rice paper, but you can't have it all. -- (#56B) COM TAM DAC BIET - Pork Chop, Shredded Pork, Fried Shrimp Cake, and Steamed Egg Loaf with Broken Rice...$18.95 This wasn't the best one I've had, but it's definitely up there. The Pork Chop was really flavorful, the Shrimp Cake was crispy, the Egg Loaf was super thick, and I love how they gave a side of soup, which a lot of places don't typically do. Along with how delicious the food is, the other thing that I like about Thien Long is the service. Not only are all of the workers and servers really nice, but they're surprisingly attentive. Plus, the restaurant always looks and feels so clean! The only thing about Thien Long that I hate, besides the parking and how far away they are from me (I'd come here far more than I should if they were closer), is how they've essentially set an impossible standard for most pho joints to match. Really, they all just seem so basic now that I know how much more I can get here, both in terms of taste and menu options. Over the years, I've been more than happy to make the drive down here and I'm more than happy to keep doing it to get my fix of my Vietnamese favorites. Which is really something these days considering how gas is currently $eleventy dollars a gallon (#pain).

Those two things let me know that this food was about to be good, and I was right. Both the Bun Bo Hue and pho were super tasty. The broth was really rich and flavorful and the meat was also tasty. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to have any spring rolls or egg rolls on the menu. Their hoisin sauce and sriracha also seems to be house-made as it tasted better than the usual store-bought kind. The sauce was a little sweeter than the usual kind. If you are using Apple Pay, be aware that they only take debit. Also, the parking in this plaza is awful.

The Bun Bo Hue was solid -- a good combination of saltiness, sourness, and spiciness all wrapped up in one. We also ordered the pho -- not quite as good, but respectable. The pho is on the saltier side. One note -- the portions are generous. A "small" which probably should be called a regular, is enough to feed a normal person. You don't need to get a large unless you're extremely hungry. The ambiance is nice -- homey, very comfortable and familiar. Lots of seating available, the restaurant is larger than it looks outside CASH OR DEBIT ONLY so make sure you bring cash!

I got V8 banh cuon tay ho chay which came with flour sheet, stuffed flour sheet, yam tempura, mung bean tempura, fried tofu, veggies, and then they even brought out a vegetarian dipping sauce for me. Everything was absolutely delicious, I especially enjoyed the flour sheet when dipped in the sauce, and the yam tempura. The mung bean tempura was also really interesting, it sort of looked and tasted like a muffin. I also got a pennywort juice since my Vietnamese friend said she drank it growing up in Vietnam and had never seen it on a menu in the US before. It was very interesting, not really sweet at all, I mostly liked it but it had a slightly weird aftertaste. The service was good enough, the waiters weren't super attentive or particularly friendly but our food came out quickly and we had no issues. The interior is spacious and clean. When I asked for a takeout container it even came with a little cup for dipping sauce which was really nice. Highly highly recommend!

The standout dish was the egg rolls. They arrived hot, golden brown, and perfectly crisp, with a satisfying crunch and a flavorful filling that made them the best part of the meal. The food, however, wasn't the reason for my rating. The restaurant's cleanliness left me concerned. I noticed cobwebs that appeared to have been hanging in place for a long time, along with dirt and grime collecting in corners throughout the dining room. Even the menus felt sticky, with a visible film of grease and small food particles still clinging to them. The faded print and worn condition made them look as though they hadn't been replaced in years. Those details created an impression of neglect that made it difficult to relax and enjoy the meal. With a thorough deep cleaning and some updated menus, this restaurant could create a much more welcoming dining experience. Until then, the cleanliness issues overshadow what was otherwise an average meal.
