Ordered a menudo and after eating a couple spoons of it I found a rubber band in the menudo.

Old and Cold gray carne. Tough and chewy.

Sooooo bad. Very expensive for old tasting carne asada. Carnitas was cold and bright pink for some reason. Al Pastor was edible but really lacking in flavor. I waited over 30 minutes in an empty restaurant for two burritos and a dozen small tacos. Paid over $60! No way I will ever return.

I had a torta at this place today. It was so disgusting. I don't get why this place has good reviews. See picture below.

They show no pricing on their menu and I was served old rice on my dish after paying $16 for a breakfast? Ridiculous! Their salsas are terrible too! Not recommended.

Calabaza (squash blossom) quesadilla and carnitas taco.

I recently had lunch here and the prior reviews of this place had sparked my curiosity. This is a small mom and pop Mexican spot in an older strip center. Nothing fancy at all. I ordered the quesadilla calabaza (squash blossoms) and a carnitas taco. The quesadilla calabaza was not very good. The squash blossoms were undercooked and did not have that great of flavor. I have had stuffed squash blossoms at other places and they can be pretty good. The cheese in the quesadilla was not melted. The carnitas taco was just so-so. The carnitas meat was moist but lacking in flavor and did not have the crisp crust/bark on the outside that I like. The horchata here was pretty good. And the salsas, which you could tell were homemade, were good as well. Would I return? No.

    Carnita tacos Delicious and inexpensive

Start cleaning out underneath your table pushing you out as fast as they can. The bar just closes down not even announcing a last call. And what is with those awful margaritas. I can't believe that a Michelin feathered Mexican restaurant can serve such awful margaritas. And I am not alone as I mentioned it to another Restaurant crowd and they agreed and said they were probably the worst margaritas in Orange. I don't know whether it's the mix or the amount of alcohol or what it is but they come out watery and really sour. A totally good dining experience has to encompass everything, food is only 50% of the deal the other 50% is service with a smile, and this one lacks it. Now there could be a reason for this epic shutdown at 9 PM. But I wonder what it is? Santa Monica seafood in Santa Monica on Wilshire Boulevard has to have last orders in by 8:30 because if they are not closed out by 10 o'clock entirely, the neighbors complain that they are putting out trash and making a noise after 10 so that I understand. But it took me a year to find that out from the owners. Restaurant owners are so stuck up and anal, I know I was one. Gabbi, whom I have never seen, should spend a night or two watching her Restaurant closing up.

The beans did not taste watered down, and the enchiladas themselves were flavorful. I always worry about shrimp overpowering the sides of a dish but it tasted great. The rice was also really filling. We had a reservation and they seated us at a pretty big table, which I liked. The servers were very timely, kind, and knowledgeable about each dish on the menu and the rotating specials. The inside of the restaurant was HUGE. I'm pretty sure it was built inside of a church. I really liked the stained glass and elevated seating areas nearby, it reminded me of the Old Spaghetti Factory layout in Fullerton. Overall, I had a very positive experience. I had to get a Diet Coke and of course, it was crisp to my expectations. A little heads-up, unlike the Costa Mesa location, they do not have horchata. Nevertheless, I'd come here again to try their burritos, tostadas, and salads!

But once again one has this perfunctory service, that is service that is merely to get through a night and not to enhance a dining experience. So many restaurants now seem to have the same problem, that is servers who just want to get through the evening and get it over with. The service industry has really taken a dive since my day. I don't get it. Don't they get paid more than they used to just a year or two ago. Anyway, I do enjoy the Camerones. But, the dreadful flan that I was served. This is such a basic desert and very easy to make, but one can overcook the egg proteins easily and the whole thing is grainy, scrambled and not pleasant to eat. Basically it should be cooked in a Bain Marie. Probably a lost art. Avila's has several locations and one may differ from another. The one I ate at is in Orange.

When we got there, I let the server know but it didn't seem to matter because he didn't ask my name or time, he just seated us. That works for me! Glad we didn't have to wait, we had to make it a fast meal! We waited about 5 minutes before we were greeted by our waitress. I had seen they had just started serving the soft serve margaritas on their IG and I was SUPER excited to order one! I asked our waitress (Rosie) what flavors were available and she had to ask someone else. Ok, no worries, they had mango and strawberry. I asked for a swirl. My husband ordered a shot of patron anejo sherry cask. She did not seem to understand what he was asking for even though it was an item listed on the menu. He repeated himself a couple times and even pointed to it on the menu before she said "I'll have to check with the bar" she took the rest of our order which consisted of another cocktail, the empanadas, and an order of enchiladas. She left for a bit and came back saying they had his tequila. Then another waitress came back a few moments later asking how he wanted his tequila. After our order was in, we received our chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious! Not too long after, my empanadas came out and they were overdone. Burnt. The pastry was bitter, but not just because it was overcooked, but because it seems like the oil was old. The filling wasn't what I was expecting, but it was tasty. My husband's enchiladas were good. I had one bite. After our meal, husband ordered one more cocktail and the dessert chimichanga. Same bitter oil taste on the chimichanga, I wasn't a fan. When we were brought the check, it turns out we were overcharged for the tequila. We brought it up to the waitress and she told him he ordered a different one when he had repeated "patron anejo sherry cask" to her multiple times. I don't even know if there's more than one sherry cask tequila on the menu! Anyway, she was able to adjust the bill to charge us for the correct tequila but the husband still didn't get to drink the tequila he wanted. Oh well.

The carnitas themselves are the star--tender, juicy pork that's been slow-cooked to perfection with that signature crispy edge on some pieces, delivering rich, savory flavor without being overly greasy. It's seasoned just right, with a nice balance of porky goodness and subtle spices that let the meat shine. Wrapped in a large, fresh flour tortilla (they make their own in-house, which always helps), it's stuffed generously with the classics: fluffy Mexican rice, creamy refried or whole beans (depending on your preference, but both work great), chopped onions, cilantro, and a solid dose of salsa. I went with their green salsa for a bright, tangy kick that cuts through the richness perfectly, plus a dollop of sour cream and cheese for that creamy melt. No skimping on portions here--it's hearty and filling, easily a meal that satisfies for hours. At around $10 (give or take, based on current pricing), it's a great value in the area. The burrito holds together well without falling apart mid-bite, and the overall balance of textures--tender meat, soft rice/beans, crisp onions--makes every mouthful enjoyable. If you're in the mood for classic carnitas done right in a casual, bakery-taqueria spot with great salsas and a friendly vibe, this one's definitely worth grabbing. I'd rate it 4.5 out of 5--only docking half a point because it's not reinventing the wheel, but it's executing the traditional style exceptionally well. Highly recommend if you're near 728 N Tustin St in Orange! Pair it with an horchata, yum
