The bf and I stopped in here for lunch. Man, What a selection! Choosing was hard, so I just went for what looked like it had the most flavor. I chose the Cemita Poblana with a jalapeño, my bf had the carnitas burrito with verde sauce. My sandwich was everything I hoped it would be from the picture on the wall. A deep-fried, breaded piece of steak on a toasted sesame seed bun with sauteed jalapeño, avocado, onions and a slice of the Mexican cheese that I can't remember the name of(casero?). So much flavor, and the hot sauce helped. The burrito was huge with nice chunks of meat, creamy refried beans and spanish rice inside. The verde sauce was very yummy. We also ordered the jamaica to drink, which I ended up not liking. I like the jamaica better when it is homemade or made from a mix(?) and not bought from a vendor. Awesome prices too, both items were around $6. We'll definitely be back. Looking at the other reviews, I think I will have to go for breakfast sometime. read more

Burrito!! All I wanted was a burrito.... And boy, did I get a burrito. I requested a vegetarian burrito and they hooked it up. Stuffed with rice, beans, avocado, cheese, tomato, smothered in green chili sauce, covered with more cheese. It was huge. It was spicy. It was delicious. And it was only $5. We ordered a carne asada quesadilla, chicken nachos and menudo. Everything was delicious!!! The only thing is I wished they put hominy corn in the menudo. First time I've had menudo without hominy and it didn't taste the same. Other than that everything was excellent. read more

I had heard about this place from some Mexican and Guatamalen ladies that I used to help with their English skills. It's just a hole-in-the-wall, but it is very good. It's sit down service, and the waiter comes to take your order. It helps if you speak Spanish. We were the only non-hispanics in the restaurant. I had the carnitas burrito, and it came with rice, beans, salsa, and onions inside, and the outside of the burrito was grilled a little, so was a bit crispy, which was very good. Husband got the carne asada plate, which came with rice and beans, salad (lettuce, avocado, tomato, and radish), and choice of corn or flour tortillas. Both were very very good, and my burrito was big enough for two meals. I had a coke, and Husband had a Horchata. It came out to $16 even, very reasonable. The waiter added up the total in his head, and we never got a written bill. It was very funny. Service was very friendly and prompt. read more

They were really friendly - spoke almost no English - but we figured it out. I usually have a really good experience here, but my last time here was unbelievable. I ordered the Huevos a la Mexicana to eat here for breakfast. It came out suspiciously steaming hot. The beans has a crusty overlay, the rice was a little dry but weird hot and the egg was mushy but hottt. I felt the bottom of the plate. It was obviously microwaved... When I asked them they confidently said no. I called them out on it and pointed out all of the details that proved them wrong. They finally took the plate back. WTF Mate!! I survived on microwaved foods in college. You cannot fool me. And the denial just pissed me off into oblivion. This was more of a sad experience than anything. I usually order their Caldo de Pollo on sick days and it never disappointed. But I don't think I'll be back. You just don't do that shit dammit. read more

So, since this place is so close to my job and it's located in a kitschy 60's looking strip mall, I decided I should give it a try. I tried the mole with chicken, which was good though awkward to eat with the whole pieces of chicken in it. Second time, I tried the fajita plate which unfortunately was a greasy mess. Now, what really amazed me was my order of the *muy authenica* quesadilla. What made it authentic and not the regular greasy tex-mex version we're all used to? The tortilla: it was a massive handmade corn tortilla with a huge amount of cheese, chicken, and vegetables folded in between. Really good, especially with their homemade red salsa. The only downsides I could see here was it's small and the service is sometimes lackluster. The most resent time I went to try their wet burritos I ended up walking out because I felt like no one was going to take my order. read more

I don't even know if words do justice. My friend introduced me to El Ruby but honestly it's a diamond!! Came in for his favorite #23 Chilaquiles Con Huevo which was amazing. However then, and thank God for wall menus with pictures, I spotted #26 Torta Cubana. Al kidding aside, it was a top 5 all time sandwiches for me. It's so good it's confusing. The place is very small and it can get very hot in there, however, the food is very delish! My personal favorites are the asada burritos with red sauce, caldo de res, enchiladas, and chilaquiles. Parking can be difficult to find and they are usually packed during lunch time so take heed. read more

Been coming to this place since they opened up. The food is delicious!! It's run by a Mexican Family from Puebla. My mom who was also from Puebla passed away years ago and every time I've felt home sick for her food, I come to this restaurant for a little taste of Puebla. Hits the spot EVERY TIME. We love this place. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Great service and great food. The only negative is that it's cash only, but there's an ATM at the liquor store next door. For breakfast try the menudo, chilaquiles or just plain old eggs, beans and rice. Great caldo de res and burritos. My kids love the tacos. I have been eating at this place since I was 1 yr. old. Because you can't beat the prices and the tasty food. It's on my way to and from work and it calls to me as I pass by. I have tried pretty much everything on the menu and the only things I haven't liked is the Torta Cubana and the chorizo breakfast. Everytime I go in, I have a hard time deciding what to order, but for sure I keep going back to their hearty, rustic soups and their cemita. Stopped at El Ruby Cafe for a quick breakfast while my mom was having a procedure done at nearby Glendale Memorial Hospital. The service was quick and kind. We ordered a Chorizo and Egg Burrito which was also filled with rice and beans. It was pretty tasty. My sister and I gobbled it up rather quickly. Not bad for $5. Great Mexican food in Glendale...right up there with La Cita and La Azteca. The carnitas is very good. The san fernando corridor is the only place to find real mexican food in glendale. I love the watery red salsa they have available at each table in a squeeze bottle. Their breakfast selection is very tasty as well, especially if you like chorizo con huevos. read more

Update July 2013: Uh oh. They seem to have replaced their breaded (milanesa-style) chile relleno with the egg-batter variety. This is probably more appetizing then the breaded kind when you have it served on a plate, but inside the burrito it doesn't work as well. I'm hoping it's a temporary substitution. El Ruby is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. I always get the cemita(s?) poblana sandwich, which is all you ever need, although a friend of mine likes the chilaquiles, too. The cemita sandwich is one of the best deliciousness-per-dollar deals ever. It has some sort of chili sauce, a slice of queso fresco, milanesa, onion and a whole half avocado on a perfect toasted sandwich bun. And it's cheap: $8 for that and a large glass of horchata, including tip. Service is fast, great for a work lunch, but they also let you have the table as long as you want (they don't bring the check until you ask). What a great restaurant! read more

The chilaquiles with the egg on top instead of scrambled are amazing. Possibly the best I've had. The cemita poblana which is a sandwich specific to and from the town of Puebla, Mexico is delicious. It is a thin breaded steak sandwich with Mexican cheese, avocado, onions and salsa. These are but two of my favorite dishes but I have never been disappointed by anything I've gotten here. Go there! Que rico!!! Had the chilaquilles w red chile. Excellent. Chile is like the one my mom made, not hot, just flavorful. The tortilla strips are soft and the Mexican cheese compliments the sauce. Beans are simple and creamy, served w out cheese. I'm always on the hunt for chilaquilles and I've kissed some real frogs. I've found my prince!
