I remember going to El Ruby as an elementary student in the early 1960's when I lived in Southern Glendale. It was a larger restaurant then, and it served the best salsa fresca I have ever eaten with hints of garlic, cilantro, and oregano in a sweet, spicy, thick tomato sauce . The tacos deshebrada had stringy, beefy tasting meat with crumbles of excellent cotija cheese. I went back to El Ruby almost 40 years later. The old time restaurant was gone, and in its place was a small strip mall, but El Ruby's was still there. The older lady who ran it said she worked at the El Ruby of old. The salsa had changed, but the taco deshebrada was still intact. The older lady retired sometime in 2003 or so, and so I hope the new cooks are carrying the torch. This tiny restaurant has great nostalgic value for me. It is the first place where I sampled truly wonderful Mexican cuisine. I have yet to find another northern Mexican restaurant that can equal El Ruby of the 1960's. read more

Just happened upon this place a couple of weeks ago and I've been back three times. Everything is sooo delicious. Love their hard shell carnitas tacos. Their beans are delicious too. They have a variety of homemade hot sauces which are so good. I want to try their soups. Authentic, homemade tasting food. It is now my go-to when I want Mexican. read more

I was craving the best chilaquiles I could find on my short vacation because where I live in Florida, the Mexican food is slacking big time. Anyway, I tracked down El Ruby Cafe and liked what I saw based on the pictures. Omg the food did not disappoint at all. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes with the eggs sunny side up. It had the perfect amount of spice, not wayy too much but just enough to get your nose running (or maybe it was because I was still getting over the flu, lol). Great portion sizes for great prices. Let me start off by saying this place is perfect example of authentic Mexican food. Mom and pop shop who serve food from Puebla Mexico. Cemita torta with milanesa is delicious nice and spicy with chipotle peppers and avacado. Chicken enchiladas is with spicy hearty sauce and very generous with cheese and chicken. This place used to be very good but unfortunately since they have changed the menu and the cook turned out to be very bad. The portion of the food is half that is ok but quality is zero. I was incredibly impressed with the various flavors in their food. I am blown away by their verde sauce and their pulled chicken was moist and full of white meat. The beans ans rice were good but the radish, tomatoes and avocado on the plate were delicious. They serve it with a shredded iceberg lettuce, which I normally eat but since I'm Covid fat, I didn't finish my plate. Staff was wearing masks and so were the other customers who weren't eating. My husband went for the 3 taco plate and said the tortillas were delicious. I called ahead to pick up some chicken soup for a friend who wasn't feeling well. A torta de milanesa and a chicken quesadilla. It was ready in 15 minutes. I walked in super cute clean place. Chicken soup was fresh with plenty of veggies and chicken. The broth was perfect. Torta and quesadilla hot and all with fresh ingredients. Will be ordering more often. read more

Got chicken mole called in order but they didn't start it till I arrived that's fine no worries all the ladies working are very nice amazing service. My food didn't give that much beans it was a sad scoop. Rice was decent the chicken mole was good not amazing I'm picky with chicken mole . The pictures posted looked really good but when I got my food I was pretty disappointed. I think the beans just failed sooo bad. No flavor and I don't think they were cooked correctly because on the pictures posted they look much darker then what I was served and the flavor was just blank absolutely no flavor. The rice was pretty good the chilaquilles plate was average pretty big portion though. The cofee was good, I believe they put cinnamon in the pot to give it a slight flavor. read more

Ii'm not saying that dinah's is bad but i just wanted some good mexican food and it was satisfying. i had the enchilada de molé there and it was yummy. The molé had one of the most interesting flavors: it was savory, smokey, salty, spicy and sweet (i know there's a lot of S's). The food here is so delicious and amazingly still has reasonable prices on their menu. I normally order breakfast to go since it's near my workplace, when I get there it's always ready. Today I decided to wait in my car for my order because I got there earlier than expected so my order was being still made, so I waited in my car this time, and the owner went out of his way to bring my order outside to me and even took my payment there because he was worried I was in a rush. Our new spot when we want Authentic Mex food and don't feel like cooking. The staff is so nice even though I personally wasn't there to pick up our phone order. It was our first time and didn't know it was cash only. They let my hubby take the food and bring the $7 dollars later. WHAT?! place lets you do that. My hubby and I were just amazed. Food was great and the kids devoured it. Menudo is great too but they don't add corn which was wasn't missed because it was so good. I cant wait to try other things on their menu. The food is delicious very authentic Mexican food. I loved their mole and beef stew. You have to come and try it fir yourself.

I ordered the mole poblano and my mom had a menudo plus two sopes. The decor looks a bit old fashioned and sort of gave me a vibe that not everything was made to order. But I quickly changed my mind. I ordered a hot chocolate and realized they were going to legit make it (not those powder chocolates with hot water). So that was great. And then turns out they make everything fresh everyday and if they run out for the day then that's that. And the tortillas are hand made too. Made me feel good about eating here knowing that. Really good food. When we first tried their food it was last week and I got the carnitas flautas with rice and beans. It was super delicious and fresh. Also it had a side salad and i dont ever finish my food but i did that day and i loved it. My brother got the rachero carnitas burrito it was really delicious and the sauce was really good and not spicy he said. So last night we went again and same outcome totally delicious. My brother got the carne asada fajitas he said it was super delicious and tender. I got the carnitas tostada.(make sure if you dont like spicy exclude the dice up jalapeno lmao i didn't know they had it inside till my mouth was on fire for a bit lol) Definitely made my night. Highly recommend. Yes they wore facemask, they had gloves on, clean, and has outside seating. Most importantly affordable.
