If you sit at the tables you can't get all the tapas but you do have a nice English menu. carrillada (5/5) - One thing that was excellent that was missing on the English menu was the pork cheeks known as carrillada Paving (3/5) - it's basically deep fried cod. Atmosphere: great place for traditional tapas. In order to order tapas, you must stand at the bar, which is standing room only. To sit, you're only allowed to order from the dinner side of the menu only. Food: overall, food was actually pretty good! Ordered the chickpeas with spinach which was a bit salty for me, and nothing special. I saw that it's been referred to as Indian food style, which I disagree with if you've ever had traditional Indian food. Also ordered the handmade croquettes, which were good, but nothing special. Calamari didn't have enough breading and didn't come with sauces. Salmon ceviche was great, but I'd say nothing too special as well. Jamon iberico was less fatty, which I loved. Service: traditional Spanish service, no one really spoke english that much, but with much pointing and gesturing....you can make your way through the menu!! Also- their wines are all amazing. WOW, this place is phenomenal. Vibe overall is great - kind of small, homey feeling, very authentic. Love the cured meat shank just hanging from the ceiling. I will say that the first time I came here, I was surprised to find no chairs. It's standing room only. There's space at the bar and tables nearby, but keep in mind that it gets very crowded for dinner. You will likely have to wait for a spot to open up or come early to nab a spot. I also loved how they keep track of your tab on the bar itself. They just write down the prices in chalk of everything you order. If you order more, they add another number onto the table. When you pay, they add everything up on the table. I love it!! For food, we ordered the iberico chorizo, salmon tartare and croquettes. Everything was delicious and tasted so fresh. Croquettes were surprisingly light and not heavy at all. Service was excellent as well. Staff is super friendly and willing to help when needed. Overall, fantastic place. With the exception of the goat/sheep cheese - layer out carelessly on a white plate - the food was miserable. Flavorless, overcooked and uninspired. The wait staff was also disappointed and the ambiance was fine. We have no idea why this restaurant is still in business. Avoid this tourist trap and look inside if you'd like to see it for the historic value. Plenty of other great restaurants to eat at- enjoy! read more

This place may be well-known, but it's more to go for the novelty of the oldest restaurant in Seville and not for its food. The food isn't bad, but it's not amazing. They also had a big problem with reservations - they couldn't find my reservation (though ended up being able to seat us), and they turned away several families who said they had reservations because the restaurant couldn't find their reservations either. I got the gazpacho, the spinach with chickpeas, and the guilthead (a fish). I thought the gazpacho was very good and smooth, though a friend of mine thought it tasted metallic. The spinach and chickpeas were a good appetizer to share but wasn't anything incredible. Be aware that the portions are BIG. My guilthead (about 18 euros) was massive and came with a small helping of roasted vegetables. It was quite good at first, though it started tasting more bland as I kept eating. A friend of mine got the pork dish (which was absolutely enormous - no way anyone could finish that) and thought it was mediocre. There's only really one waiter working there, and he was quite busy. It took a really long time to get our bill, and we had to get our own oil/vinegar for the bread since they kept forgetting to bring it over. El Rinconcillo, tucked away in the lovely alleys of Seville, has stood the test of time and practically reeks of longstanding tradition. One walk into the restaurant and it's as if you're transported back into time where service matters, drinks are served with interesting conversation, and knowing the owners of the restaurant is like having a family connection. And despite its renown, the place is surprisingly really casual - it's the antithesis of "trendy", "touristy" spots and really must feel like home to a lot of citizens of Seville. A casual glance into the restaurant pans from the ceilings laden with Iberico jamon, to the busy bar where many people eat tapas standing up while laughing with friends at night, towards the walls laden with inscriptions and traditional Moorish-influenced tiles. We had a slight issue with our reservation, probably because of the language barrier. Many people have previously complained that the servers are rude to people who don't speak Spanish, and unfortunately I had to say that was my experience here. But you know what, I get it - it's not fair to expect that every establishment will cater to your native language and they had translated menus that helped. However, there is something to say for trying - after I said "muchas gracias" to the waiter, he mocked me and make a joke out of it. I didn't take too much offense to it, but it definitely discouraged me from speaking Spanish for the rest of the meal, and the entire time we felt really out of place. So why a 5 star review? Well, simply because the food was just...so damn good. I've gotten the feel of a lot of places in Seville during our trip, and like a lot of other places, this restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine despite the many patrons and small square footage. We got food within minutes and timing with plates were perfect - this is such a rare thing, but the waiter never hovered over us, and we never felt like we had to flag down service, and appetizers got cleared before entrees, etc. Definitely get the Espanaca con garbanzos - it was a delicious fusion of Middle Eastern and Spanish preparation, a nod to Spain's roots. We also got a light salad with pickled red peppers and fish, which was lightly dressed. I got the rack of lamb with potatoes and blistered green peppers, which was perfection. Despite its light preparation, the lamb was jam packed with flavor - it was like being transported to a whole new level of meat. And with only kosher salt to round out the seasoning! I was floored. the peppers lent a really sweet and maillard-y taste, and the potatoes were spot on - creamy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. My friend got a similar dish with the pork chops, and wow. I have never had pork chops so tender, so well seasoned, and so perfectly prepared. My other friend got the cod and also liked her dish. To round out, we got dessert - the flan and chocolate cake. The cake was like a brick of fudge - but unraveled cinnamon and floral notes. The flan was also pretty good too. I would probably skip dessert the next round though. Overall, as a summary, this establishment is not to be missed - but definitely come with respect for the culture. This place isn't meant to be catered towards tourists, but try your best by dressing slightly more than casual, calling ahead to make a reservation, and arriving on time. Or if you want the more casual route, come by the bar and eat tapas standing up. My only tip is that make sure you arrive early (in Spain that pretty much means like...8:30 PM) to find seating, as the place get really, really packed. Small fish were lightly-battered and tasted really fresh and sweet unlike anything I have had. Olives are more salty and tart than ones I have had. I would be remiss to not review this place, it was my favorite tapas spot while traveling through southern Spain. According to the signage it's been chugging along for around 350 years. It felt quite like the tourist trap at first, but service seemed to improve and there was/is a steady flow of locals and turistas all through the day and into the night. My three tapas standouts were the spinach (espinaca), bacalao, and pork cheek (carillada). In fact, Im already going through carillada withdrawal, as the braised pork cheek was savory and amazing on the palate. Also this was a fun spot to just stop in for coffee in the morning or a nice sangria late night. More than just tapas, this gem is worth a visit when you are in Seville. read more

So, of course we had to go visit the oldest bar in Seville, especially when it's been around for over 400 years! It was definitely pretty old school in its furnishing and styling, but it has charm. Go downstairs for tapas and upstairs for sit down restaurant. We were tired and there isn't that much seating downstairs so we opted for the restaurant. We tried Lamb chops 3/5: This were also a bit of a surprise because they say lamb croquettes on the menu, but in actuality are lamb chops. They were a bit overcooked and overly salty. Gazpacho; 5/5 easily the best gazpacho I've ever had anywhere. Duck: 2/5 so we think they gave us steak instead of duck because it really didn't taste like duck at all. If it was duck, well they cooked all the duck flavor out of it! We also had an excellent red wine called Gloriosa that I'm dying to find in the states. I would come here and eat some tapas downstairs and definitely try the gazpacho. The restaurant is just so so. read more

Confusing atmosphere, mostly a bar but they have tables in the back for non tapas items. Ordered lamb, very soft and chewy, but fell off the bone. Came with grilled jalapeños and fries which were both the best part of the meal (a little salty but still delicious). Entrees while sitting at a table are literally just larger quantities of tapas, got meat that was just slices of the the meat arranged in a plate for $6 and normal tapas are usually $3 (about equal conversion to euros). Got a plate of olives, very good. Overall, food was not something I would eat again but atmosphere was lively once I understood what was going on. read more

Both dished came with the small shrimps which were not even indicated in the menu, the sea bass LOINS were actually three small pieces of fish. Dinner was setup through the vacation tour we went to in Spain. We dined upstairs and I liked the old style Spanish decor of the place. The Spanish Tapas served here seemed to be a bit more traditional than the Tapas I've experienced thus far. Several plates were individually served which included pork dishes, vegetables/salads and shrimp. The menu was set for our dinner but it looks like there are lots of other options to choose from if ordered off the menu. It was topped off with flan dessert and coffee in the end. The first tapas bar we visited in Spain was this gem - they allege to be the oldest in Spain. You certainly do feel a sense of history walking in the door, looking at the barrels of sherry, and eagerly anticipating the food as you see the jamon sat on the counter in readiness. We stood at the bar, a great way to chat up other tourists as this place is in all the books, and the stone-faced but efficient servers took our order. We enjoyed iberico ham and cheese, but were particularly wowed by our first "boquerones," the delicious little fried anchovies that are popular throughout this region of Spain. Served with a lemon, they were hot, crispy, and an incredibly addictive snack. Food and drinks are dirt cheap, but this place definitely has a soul. Absolutely worth a stop. read more

El Rinconcillo is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) tapasbars in Sevilla. The decorations are beautiful with the walls tiled with azulejos and jamones hanging from the ceiling. The ambiance is how you would expect a real tapasbar to be one century ago. The food was delicious and genuine. If not for the service we would have given this bar at least 4 stars. It's just that the way you are served really influences the overall experience of eating out. And that's where it went wrong. When entering we were not really warmly welcomed. One of the locals entering after us was given priority, while we were kind of left there standing for someone to appoint us our table. After we received our delicious salad, we discovered we needed at least a fork (and a knife) to eat it. We tried to catch the attention of one of the waiters. After five minutes we succeeded when one waiter confirmed he saw us, but never came back to attend us. It took at least 10 minutes before a waiter stopped at our table to attend us and bring us some cutlery. He did not even say sorry for waiting (while I ordered in fluent Spanish). The rest of the meal we were basically ignored and it was really difficult to catch the attention of a waiter. Honestly, we have not felt so unwelcome in a restaurant that should treat a customer, may be not as a king, at least as a welcomed visitor. Like I said, the overal experience really influences the way you enjoy a meal. Let's hope this was just a once off flaw and that the waiters will be more happy and welcoming tomorrow. read more

I've been to Spain a couple times and Europe many more; this was the worst restaurant experience I've had on the continent. The whole experience was awful but capped off when we got the check - the waiter had added in an extra food order and three times the number of water bottles we received, as if we wouldn't notice. Wouldn't have thought it was malicious except that we were quarantined with one other American table in a back room which we came to refer to as the "American room of shame." Although our room was seated before the rest of the tables in the main room, they had ALL received food and drink by the time we even ordered 30-45 minutes after sitting down - which we only accomplished by having one of our party attempt to order at the bar. We never got a wine list, and the bottles (one red and one white) he deigned to give us were mediocre at best. The meat we ordered medium was more raw than rare. An egg dish was inedibly salty. The waiter sighed and shook his head at us with every polite interaction he was forced to endure. By the way, three of our group speak Spanish and language was not a barrier. read more

We ended up at this place based on a recommendation from our hotel. The funny thing was that we knew that it existed from various guide books, but we didn't realize how close it was to the hotel. We dropped by for a late dinner at around 11PM and found the place bustling. After finally figuring out how to order, we decided to try some cod in tomato sauce, spinach with garbonzo beans, and fried olives. I ordered our food at the bar counter and then went back to our standing table where the bartender/waiter brought our dishes out to us as they were ready. Before this trip, I had never had spinach and garbanzo beans. This dish was such a revelation that my wife and I have committed ourselves to figuring out how to make it now that we are back in the states. This bar was very charming on the inside, but I can't offer any praise for the food. I ordered a roast pepper salad, which came out with a ton of tuna on it. It was not what I expected - a lot of little pieces of cut up peppers and huge pieces of tomato that were not yet ripe. For my meal, I ordered fried fish, which was well cooked but not flavorful at all. Really any sauce or salsa would have helped immensely. My husband also described his meal, the pork shoulder, as very bland. On top of that, the waiter wasn't super helpful or friendly. He forgot to bring us beer and got a couple of other things wrong. The decor is olden-style (I suppose the word "traditional" would fit...), and was - as mentioned in other reviews - touristy in the entrance place, however we perched by the bar and had Spanish speakers, who seemed on good terms with the staff. Speaking of whom, they were very accommodating of our minimal Spanish, and fast to serve. There is a rotary telephone behind the bar (next to the card machine!), however it rang twice and was not answered, so it's probably best to just swing by. We came to this place simply because it's the oldest bar in Seville and everyone told us to stop by there. Maybe it's unfair to give them only 3 stars since we weren't super hungry and only got a couple of things, but nothing was overwhelmingly great. The inside reminded me of a pub. It definitely had that old-timey charm though. We were a little confused when we walked in as to where we could sit and eat, but someone finally told us that the downstairs bar area was for tapas, and anywhere that had tables/seats were for a sit-down restaurant. This was confusing at first since there are tables next to the bar area, so we thought that was tapas too. Wrong. Anyway, I'd prefer a nicer bar/tapas place with an outdoor patio, which most of Spain has. However, if you like the old, pub charm, this is a great place for you. read more

First: acorn fed pork. Amazing, delicious, maybe the best pork I've ever had. We ate a lot of jamon in Spain, this was excellent. The cured pork was good, but nowhere near as good as the acorn fed pork. You can really taste a difference. The spinach and chick pea dish was also terrific, cooked in that thick orange oil. There was a lot of flavor in this dish. This is something that I am going to be testing out in my kitchen, trying to recreate the flavor I had that day. This was where we learned our lesson when it comes to ordering salad in Spain. It was a barely chopped up head of iceburg lettuce, with a quartered tomato, a hunk of onion, and a hunk of tuna. Apparently this is a common dish, but wasn't what I was hoping for when I ordered a salad. The elder server seemed to be having difficulty with the (what I can imagine) is larger than normal crowd, as it was holy week, and the parade had just passed by about a block away from the restaurant. ----NOTE: This review is for the fancier restaurant upstairs --- We arrived early hoping to get some tables for tapas, but because of our large group (9), we were ushered upstairs for dinner instead. (yea, I know I'm crazy for trying to do tapas with 9 people!). The head waiter greeted us at the top of the stairs and asked if we had a reservation. "No problem" he said after quickly reviewing his reservation book and brusquely ushered us to a small room at the far end of the restaurant (which is comprised of a number of small rooms with a few tables in each). Once we were seated and menus were handed around (which have two pages each of Spanish, English, French, and Italian - not a good sign...), he looked at me with note pad in hand and said "Something to drink?" Of course such things take time when you have your entire family, including your 70-something mom, a couple of kids, and a couple of teenagers, but while they all deliberated, I ordered a bottle of white wine. Off he zipped and in a jiffy another waiter was handing out glasses and pouring wine. Our waiter returned with notepad in hand and got the rest of the drink orders and then asked what we wanted to eat. (Keep in mind that a sum total of about 3 minutes had elapsed since sitting down). I explained to him in Spanish that we needed a bit more time to decide. Looking up from his notepad with a bit of a frown, he told me something to the effect of "Hey, right now you have my full attention, but we're about to get slammed, so you might want to order before that happens" (it was about 9 pm). I thanked him for the warning and ordered a few starters, telling him I understood, but that we still needed a moment for the main items. Off he zipped. Sure enough, the restaurant started filling up around 9:15. Our apps showed up quickly (but not too quickly) and the absolute winner was the Enselada Rinconcillo - I highly recommend it! It is a bed of lettuce with roasted peppers, white asparagus, tomato, and a variety of cold seafood including tuna, grilled squid, and shrimp. ¡Excelente! We flagged down our waiter again (who was indeed quite busy now!) and placed our order along with a nice bottle of Ribera del Duero. Wine prices were on the high side, by the way - our bottle was €29 (which is about 3x what I'd paid for a similar bottle the night before in a neighborhood joint in Seville) As a family of 9 foodies eating our way across southern Portugal and Spain, we were a bit nervous about how this meal was going to unfold - we still hadn't figured out whether this was a high-priced tourist trap or just a higher-end full service restaurant. Once the mains arrived, our fears were quickly assuaged. The overall quality was excellent, and the portions generous. Some items were better than others, of course, but overall we were not disappointed. The Spinach w/ garbanzos was ugly but delicious and exotic tasting with a middle-eastern flair. The fresh "grilled" fish (a la plancha - which actually means "griddled" in technical terms) was excellent - obviously fresh and seasoned just right with a sprinkling of salt flakes and a drizzle of olive oil. Do yourself a favor - even if you don't like pork, but enjoy meat you MUST try the "Presa de Iberico" (translated into English as "Pork Shoulder Iberico" or something like that on the menu. It is freaking amazing! They cook it medium so it is still pink, but it is so amazingly juicy and tender and flavorful it is like nothing you've ever had. I will go back again the next time I am in Seville JUST for this item! In fact we ordered another full plate of it for dessert to split between the three of us that are serious carnivores! (I'll skip pinones any time for Iberico pork steaks!) Aside from the brusque (but highly efficient service) there was nothing to complain about and I would recommend the upstairs dining room to anyone wanting to experience the quality of the food downstairs but in a more refined and relaxed setting. read more
