Our first night in Lisbon and couldn't figure out where to eat. We stumbled into this restaurant and were one of two tables seated. Server was friendly and helpful but food was not great. The cod in cream sauce was decent but lacked any real flavor. The steak was almost inedible. It was rare (not how we ordered it) and sooo fatty-it was impossible to cut. The rice served with the steak lacked flavor. Only good part of that meal was the French fries. We left disappointed. Maybe worth a shot but definitely skip the steak. read more

Our #1 favorite restaurant during our time in Lisbon! Their octopus á Lagareiro is the best dish I had in all of Portugal! In multiple visits we worked our way through the menu, and every offering was excellent. We often sat intimately close to the kitchen where we could watch the cooks preparing and plating the food. The cooks are friendly! Some of the entrees (like the fish of the day) come with a substantial serving of deliciously prepared vegetables, so you can feel healthy too. It's a great place for beverages as well, I loved their Aperol Spritz. I saw a waiter taking beer down the stairs outside so I think they also serve at the outdoor tables at the bottom of the stairs. read more

My favorite traditional Portuguese restaurant in Lisbon. Everything from the food to the setting was phenomenal. The kitchen is open and wrapped in glass so you could watch the chef prepare the dishes. I had the best grilled octopus during our entire trip, which is saying a lot since it seems that every kitchen in Portugal does it well. The grilled sardines and sea bream (fish of the day) were both fresh. The traditional house steak is a bit chewier than American steak cuts, but I immensely liked the garlic and gravy sauce. The rice with vegetables on the steak plate was also unexpectedly delicious and one of my favorite things about the dinner. read more

We came to this little restaurant for our first meal in Lisbon, and had a great meal. When we arrived we were the only customers so a little hesitant but honestly the food was so flavorful. It's a small little restaurant but cozy with a good atmosphere. We got the fish of the day, soup of the day, and a steak dish that came with rice, fries, and amazingly delicious black beans cooked in meat sauce. This is the Portuguese meal I dreamed of having for months. The service was quick and the waiters were all very attentive. We went at 6pm so it wasn't busy at all. It's a very cute restaurant that feels very welcoming. It's located right by the Rossio train station and easy to miss if you're walking by. Everytime I'm in Lisbon, this place is a must-go. the whole octopus is delicious and so, so tender. for the uninitiated, they could find it a bit salty, but it really is the garlic slices that are salty... or just drink more wine! the sardines you must order as well, they are really fresh and grilled to order. The house special steak is decent, but i could see people finding it a bit chewy if not properly tempering expectations of a cheap steak. The squid ink pasta with shrimps was also quite good. Everything is priced very afforadably and a great spot to dine at. Wish I found this place earlier in my trip! Cute place with good food and friendly service. Plus free WiFi and a bathroom! What more could you want while exploring Lisbon. Had the bacalhau a bras and loved it. I didn't like either of their red wines so finally settled on white. The waiter was patient while he let me try each one until I found one I liked. We decided to go with a soup and forgo drinks since we know we will feel full of liquid from the soup itself. The soup of the day came at 8:11pm. It is a soup full of flavour -- tasted like a butternut squash soup. Big portions for EUR2.50. The grilled salmon and grilled cod came at 8:24pm. The grilled salmon (EUR10): as a girl from Western Canada who had eaten tons of salmon, I know when a fish tasted old, and the salmon here tonight unfortunately tasted stale and over-salted. The vegetables are good. Large portions for the price. The grilled cod (EUR11): huge portion of cod. The plate is swimming in oil and I'm not used to that much oil and salt. The fish was cooked thoroughly even when it is so thick. The staff are all male and they are all nice and friendly. Overall, good experience (minus 1 for over salting and stale salmon). Sooo.. if you have had your share or sardines and octopus and just looking for that CHANGE... we tried the El Rei.... There have been lines outside for dinner so we decided they must be worth a visit... ambience is ok, little cramped inside and the attitude is "we don't need business".... But the chefs toiling around in the kitchen do a wonderful with food. .. we tried the cod fritters, they were perfect with crispy shell, and soft and creamy inside with perfect balance of salt. Then I went for the sprouted lentil burger, ohh man!!! That was delicious!!... the texture and taste, home made mayonnaise, caramelized onions just mouth watering. There's a long line. The waiter said the waiting time is 20 minutes so we decided to join the line, but the waiting time turns out to be 1.5 hours. No water offered. This place looked really good on yelp, but was a little bit left to be desired. The food I got was very good. I had sardines and bachalau. Both were good, bachalau better than the sardines. The problem I had is a few things: 1. I tried going here on Sunday when yelp said it was open and it was closed. 2. The pictures are either outdated or they give different things when take away. 3. Man sardines have a lot of bones. I was expecting fries, rice, salad, and the fish. What I got was veggies and potatoes on one dish and just potatoes on the other. The veggies were delicious as were the potatoes. The staff was friendly and they were quick and out together the food very well. read more

We were a bit surprised by this very small restaurant and skeptical at first about going it. It was a tight fit and the conversation grew louder as the restaurant filled up. We started with the bread/oil and the octopus salad. We shouldn't have paid for the olive oil with the bread because there was enough in the octopus salad. The salad was very good and I could have had that as a meal on its own. My wife had the salmon and I had the spaghetti with shrimp. Good lord this food was delicious. Food was decent, not amazing but pretty good. Simple fare but tasty. Give you a huge portion and it's CHEAP. I would go again, great for lunch or a late dinner (not too late as they close at 10). When we went, they were in the weeds and service was atrocious. Hostess/waitress ignored us completely until a table opened up. However, food was good and that's all that matters ultimately I had the House Special beef steak, served with a fried egg, rice and french fries. My wife had the grilled sardines with the same default sides. Both were good, sardines were well cooked, the steak is cut paper thin so don't expect rare. Also, the GPS on my iPhone 5 could not find the location properly, just look for the address which is next to a landing at the top of a set of stairs. read more

Super small restaurant banging out delicious, cheap, and massive portions of basic Portuguese food. Go!! It's a very small place with maybe 12-15 tables in all. Try to get there a little early or be prepared to wait a little bit. The service is a little slow, but they can only work so quickly in a small place like this. It's a perfectly reasonable pace. You're in Portugal, slow down and enjoy it. I ordered the grilled swordfish plate (they'd ran out of codfish when we went). HUGE fillets of obviously fresh swordfish. It tasted wonderful, very properly cooked, right amount of seasoning. Sides of French fries, seasoned rice, some salad and olives. The fries could've been fried a little longer, as they weren't very crispy, but that's the only gripe I have with the meal. You eat well, don't you worry. My friend ordered one of the house beef dishes and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Two main courses, a plate of olives, and a half litre of house wine put us back 17€. Fricken steal.
