My wife recently heard about this place on a local FB foodie group and it got great buzz. Well it didn't disappoint. My only mild complaint was that we ordered chicken wings and French fries for an appetizer and they came out at the same time as the main. They were crunchy, hot and delicious. Maybe next time I'll get them for my main. I don't understand though why as an appetizer they had fries, especially when there is rice with some mains. But I digress. For my main I had the Carne Asada with rice, black beans and a side of sweet plantains. Not too different than the Cuban version and just as good. My son in law had the Tallarin Verde con Bistec. The spaghetti had a Peruvian pesto sauce. I didn't try it but he said it was delicious and he crushed it. Wife and daughter had the 1/2 chicken which is their signature dish. The only misgiving they had was they prefer white meat, and it was available as an up-charge, but they didn't get it. But they loved it. The prices were really reasonable too. One thing we didn't realize was that it's BYOB. But we didn't mind the soft drinks. I noticed the breakfast menu looks outstanding and definitely want to return to try it. read more

If you're going to eat their main dishes (chicken dinners, Peruvian meals) then it's great. Breakfast is extremely bland, any of their Mexican inspired foods (fajita, burritos) very bland, and I never end up finishing it because it isn't worth the extra calories in my body. However, their chicken dinners, green beans and rice are phenomenal. Anything else is very mediocre and you're better off cooking at home. read more

El Pollon is a fabulous restaurant that specializes in grilled Peruvian style chicken. The atmosphere is clean, bright, and colorful. Our server, Orlando, was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a 1/2 grilled chicken with dark meat. It was perfectly seasoned, tender, and with crispy skin. The fried yuca and black beans and rice were also delicious. There was so much food on my plate that I was able to take half of it home. I've already been back once and will definitely return... often. We tried El Pollon for the first time and it was an overall great experience! The vibe and service were nice. The food was excellent and a nice change from most of the restaurants in Pittsburgh. It's a small, unassuming place, but the service is wonderful, the music is on point, and the Spanish speaking staff was ready to offer suggestions on best meal options and tweaks. We finally made it here for breakfast this morning. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, a steak omelet and steak Lomo salato. The sandwich was basic but delicious. Perfect to try all 3 yummy sauces. Green, yellow and something they call mayo. The steak omelet was perfect. Again, all 3 sauces added more yummy flavors. The Lomo salato wasn't "breakfast " but very glad we tried it. Thank god my daughter moved to Carnegie. I was a little cautious about something called Peruvian chicken but my god was this place an absolute home-run. The chicken had a roasted taste that all I can say was unique and delicious. Imagine a light smoke flavor with subtle spices. I made one mistake. I ordered a 1/4 chicken instead of a 1/2 chicken. Dang it. I also got the Peruvian rice and mash potatoes and gravy. 10 out of 10! Lastly we all split the 3 Leches dessert. That was superb! This is a can't miss place to eat. read more

This was our first visit to El Pollon. Since their specialty is rotisserie chicken that is what we ordered. The whole chicken comes cut into 4 pieces. It is delicious ! The meat is great and the skin is crispy and so flavorful with spices . We selected fries, plantains, green beans, and o ion tomato salad as our sides . The plantains were perfectly cooked and my favorite . The green beans were thin and freshly cooked (waitress recommended). The onion tomato salad was majority onions with a vinaigrette . The portions were large (see photo) and the price so reasonable ! The restaurant is clean and not noisy. We could have a great conversation over dinner. Yum yum yum. El Pollon chicken is deliciouso! Breakfast lunch and dinner any time of day is a good time for El Pollon. The burrito, quesadillas, chicken on a dish, all so so good! The tres leche cake is sticky sweet so pour some of that sugar on me you or your wife. It's worth the sticky fingers or whatever other body part you like to smear it onto your body partner with. It's worth the sticky cause the taste is scrum diddly sumptuous like the tour of will wonka chocalate factory. Great little spot in Carnegie that has food (Hispanic food) that pittsburghers aren't really used to. They are also really fast for a spot down restaurant. Their family meal is great for a family of 4 or 5 people , and it gives you the option to choose a bunch of different sides. read more

Friendly staff, peppy music and byob, what more could you want? Prices and portions are great too! We went with our toddler, they have high chairs and would say it's definitely somewhere you can bring kids and not be stressed. We split the whole chicken and two sides. We got the Peruvian fried rice which was good, the yuca fries which were similar to steak fries and the tomato and onion salad which was flavorful but heavy on onions so if you aren't a red onion fan I'd stay away. We had a delivery for lunch, so not sure about restaurant ambience, but our food was delicious! I had the black bean burrito with spinach, minus the rice and mushrooms with extra beans, and ~ voila! They got the order right!! The burrito was crispy, and the filling had a really unique Peruvian flavor ~ I was very impressed. I also ordered the tomatoes and onions ~ so good, slightly tart with nice lime flavor. My mate ordered a chicken burrito, and enjoyed the flavorful chicken, beans and rice. This was our first time dining at El Pollon. The interior looked the same as the previous restaurant in this location. It was very clean and modern. I ordered Carne Asada with Peruvian Fried Rice and black beans. The fried rice was probably the best I have ever tasted. The skirt steak was tender and delicious! My spouse had the same skirt steak topped with two fried eggs, french fries and white rice. It was excellent also. We were the only customers eating lunch and the service was great. We have been to the Carnegie location three or four times now. The service is very personal and the staff is kind and very attentive. The chicken is not to be missed and the pork chops do not disappoint. The fried rice and onion rings are really good. At the beginning food was delicious and fresh. Then, we felt like the food was warmed in the microwave. Chicken is the main dish, but this last visit was terrible. Also the add the 18% service which you need to be free to add your own tip. First time happened too. They need to make sure to pleased the customer so we can try to comeback. I really want to give this place 5 stars.... However, pink chicken semi raw chicken is not edible. I'm a huge Peruvian rotisserie chicken fan and had several amazing experiences at other places but unfortunately the chicken her always seems undercooked. Fantastic food, full of flavor. I've had the grilled tilapia and carne asada entrees and completely enjoyed both. For side dishes, I loved the plantains and the tomato & red onion salad. Had the green beans twice, once was fantastic but second time not as much flavor. Tried my wife's fried rice and it was excellent. Service has been quick and friendly both times I was there. I wanted to like the food more than I did. We got two apps, the yuquita balls and empanadas. The yuquita balls were really good and fried perfectly, just wish there was more for 9.99. The empanadas were good..... Until you realize they sprinkle powdered sugar on them. No matter how much I tried brushing it off, it was there. I seriously didn't want powdered sugar on a savory meat empanada. Otherwise, it was yummy. The chicken was on the small side. I got one whole chicken for my family and luckily my kids weren't hungry much cause the two adults polished it off pretty well. We chose the rice and beans for our side.... Black beans were nothing special, not flavorful. I was asked if I wanted white rice or fried rice. I thought maybe the fried rice would be something a little special. Well ... It wasn't. Had egg in it and some thing that made it not white, but the flavor didn't really elevate it from plain rice. The green and white sauces that come with it were nice to mix and match.
