Stopped here while traveling through and picked this place based on the positive reviews. What a mistake. I spent $13 bucks on a chicharron burrito that was absolutely terrible. So bad that it was only one bite in and the rest went straight into the trash. It was essentially an over priced tortilla filled with refried beans and then the cook opened a bag of chicharron chips and packed those in there. No sauce, even though I asked for chile, very little flavor. I don't know if this is how they do it in Mew Mexico, but it ain't the right way. read more

My favorite tamales, breakfast burritos (chorizo with green is so good), French fries (thin and perfectly salty), posole. I've been coming here since my childhood and it's still my favorite. I introduced my wife to their fare and she is now equally obsessed. The price of the food, too, is great, especially in these economically hard times. Everything that I've ever ordered has been so savory and just perfect. The red chile is complex and delicious, and homemade tortillas make everything taste better. If you're looking for catering, there are enchiladas casseroles that are so delicious and will always be a favorite at any function in which they're offered. I think I love El Parasol and their cooking more than my own mother's. It's what I crave when I'm ill and what I'm sure I'll crave when I'm old on my deathbed. I can see why this place has been here since 1958. It's good, basic Mexican food. I ordered two ground beef tacos. There's plenty of tasty meat and plenty of lettuce but no cheese. I counted six shreds of cheese in one taco and zero in the other. The hot sauce accompanying the tacos was fire. It was hot all right but had no flavor. There were small green pea-sized things that may have been beans. OK by me but if somebody cannot eat beans, they should be warned. They weren't many but if one can't eat them, often one cannot eat any. The kitchen was humming and sounded like a happy busy. The young woman, with long brown hair, who took my order could not have been less interested in my order or me. Zero enthusiasm. I was hoping to sit down and eat but their tables were roped off. No flavor, overly greasy meat, the burritos weren't wrapped at all, everything just falling apart and the list goes on. I had a horrible feeling inside with the staff. They made me feel like I was taking up time and space -- maybe that's why they rushed the food? Walked out spending over 60 dollars on food that just ended up in the bin. Suprisingly bad food. I was excited to try El Parasol based on the history and yelp reviews. However, I was greatly disappointed in the portion size and quality of the food. The chips and guac cost 5.50 + 12 and was mediocre at best. The burritos we ordered smothered came un smothered and were dry and tasteless. So glad I randomly tried this place on my first day in Santa Fe. El Parasol exemplifies New Mexican cuisine (as far as I - a self professed outsider - can tell). I had chicken & pork tamales with green sauce. The green sauce was positively loaded with diced hatch chiles that made it spectacularly crisp, flavorful, and just the righr amount of heat. Northern New Mexico is blessed to have El Parasol. This regional restaurant chain, with humble roots in Espanola (and obvious ties to El Paragua), serves some of the best fast food available. At this location, there is no dining area; you order inside or over the phone, and pick up your food from the counter or via drive-through. Then you take your food, leave, and eat it. Some people choose to do this in their cars; there is no right or wrong way. The tacos are delicious. Shredded beef and chicken are my preferred fillings. El Parasol's secret is to deep-fry the entire taco before adding cheese and lettuce; this gives the shells a very fresh crispness and ensures that the meat is warm upon consumption. The downside is that they can be a little greasy, but handy napkin work eliminates any cause for alarm. Enjoy the tacos with ample portions of salsa and guacamole. The hamburgers here are competently produced, not entirely unlike Lotaburger, but with greater emphasis on the meat than the vegetables. I've also had the tortilla burger here, which is essentially a burger burrito. My advice for that particular menu item is to pay the upgrade to have it smothered. The melted cheese and chile makes it jump off the plate with flavor. My all-time favorite, however, has got to be the carne adovada burrito. The slow-cooked pork they use is always tender, spicy, and lean. I order the burrito with beans and cheese, which add flavor and substance, but make it challenging to consume as the tortilla has trouble being wrapped around such a semi-solid mass. This item can also be ordered smothered, to be consumed with a fork and knife (transfer to a plate first or you'll cut through the styrofoam to-go container), and with plenty of napkin use. El Parasol is another example of "where the locals eat." Be sure to order bulk quantities of their menu items for parties and events. read more
