NOT New Mexican food, but not very far off. That being said, first time I went there for lunch, got tostadas with a side of chile con queso (a combo I miss from Las Cruces.) It was great. Ordered two breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros to go. Tot check came out to $47.33 They had one server on when we arrived. Only one other table in the space. Server took our to go order. Was prompt and courteous. THE PROS: have driven by here multiple times and love the curb appeal as well as the look and feel of the inside space. They have a water fountain that gives a nice ambiance I remember when this was Rude Boy and I love what they did with the space. All pros! THE CONS. I was a handed my to go meal it seemed light. I asked the waiter about them wrapping instead of plating the burritos (i was expecting them to be smothered and with sides, i was in a rush, so it seemed like there may have just been a minor mistake (either by my understanding or the plating) i was in a rush so i headed out, But when i got home to eat i was VERY disappointed. It seems that every single item was prepared incorrectly. The huevos rancheros had no tortillas, cheese or sauce. It was just a trinity of eggs potatoes and beans for 14$. The breakfast burritos were very dissatisfying (especially for the price - 15$ each). Neither was prepared the way requested. Perhaps the experience would have been different if we ate at a table. A pretty dismal dining experience. Probably arrived at the wrong time and the wrong day.... but.... Server was polite and efficient, but never once returned to our table... only one other table was occupied... The food was really excellent, especially the chips and creamy guacamole sauce. Is it too difficult to refill a drink? Inquire as to the efficacy of dessert? I pray this place survives!!!!!! read more

Wonderful restaurant on Route 66. I had great service and a wonderful dinner. I highly recommend the poblano chicken enchiladas. Easy to find, quick service and great local place. Also very reasonable price wise. read more

The tampiqunue Steak was Really bad. The beans and rice was good but 30dollars for a hobo to cook up an easy to make dish was so horrible the steak it's self was just not prepared right at all was chewy and gross everything else was good. They just need better cooks. I like the atmosphere too. And the waitress was very nice. read more

I had read about this place on Reddit and the wife and I decided to stop in for lunch. As much as we love New Mexican food, being from San Diego originally we do miss straight-up Mexican, and while that's not hard to find here, we haven't found any one place that consistently scratches that itch. But El Palenque fits the bill. Apparently it was open from 1987-2003; it just recently was restarted by the original founder's daughter. So some of you OG Burqueños might remember it. Anyway, on to the food. Amazing. The chips were your basic light, crunchy restaurant-style chip, and came with a creamy avocado salsa that had a nice little kick to it. The horchata was clearly homemade, and deliciously flavorful without being too sweet. Next we had the levantas muertos, a house special. Basically a beef-based green chile stew with beans. It was amazing. Reminiscent of the GC stew at The Frontier but wayyyyyy better by any measure. Quite spicy but not too much so. Wife got the carne asada tacos, which were very good, a fine example of that dish. I might like the ones at Flora a little better but then again I might not. Couldn't tell if the corn tortillas were homemade or not but they were very flavorful, not too dry, a good solid tortilla. I ordered the chicken enchiladas plate. Enchiladas are available with red, green, or poblano salsa (not red or green chile); I went with the poblano. It was slightly creamy with a rich flavor; the chicken was diced and perfectly seasoned. The plate comes with refritos and rice; the beans were nicely salty with a slight smokiness, though a little on the runny side, while the rice was mildly buttery/salty and delicious. The portions were huge; we managed the tacos, about half the stew, and just a few bites of the enchiladas, which will make excellent leftovers. Our server was kind and attentive, the atmosphere and decor are completely pleasant. 10/10, will go again. Don't sleep on this place! read more

If you're trying to get tacos here, this is not the spot. Literally just corn tortillas with meat. The smallest slice of avocado with hardly any cilantro and there was no white onion. Just a big piece of cebollita. Also he up charged me $4 for having two different types of meats even though both of the meats were the same price.
