Tried El Mofongo for the first time today. Ordered my food to go and my order consisted of the Shrimp Mofongo and a Cubano Especial. The food was very yummy and the Cuban sandwich was one of the best I've ever had. The bread for it was perfect. The shrimp Mofongo was tasty but could've used more salt or other seasonings. However it too was delicious. The service was ok, not overly welcoming but polite. Being my first time it would've been nice to be notified how long my order was going to take. Now that I know I'll be better prepared for the next time. I do intend on coming back for more. Over all a good experience and very yummy food read more

Had the daily lunch special Tuesday is chicken and rice with your choice of beans and plantains. The seasoning is so good and you get a ton of food for your money. Nothing fancy but I wasn't looking for fancy. I don't like Cuban sandwiches so I ordered a Cuban sandwich. Just something I've been doing lately. The bread was crunchy and soft, not dried out like I've had at other places. The pork, wow, the pork was delicious. That's what I was really craving was some sort of mojo pork. I don't know what they did to this pork but please don't stop. It's very quiet for 12 pm lunch but it is the week between Christmas and New Years. The patrons who were eating were of Latin descent, which is always a good sign. My first visit to El Mofongo was excellent. Having recently started a new job, I was invited to this restaurant for lunch with co-workers, and prior to then, I had never heard about this place. I'm so glad I was introduced to this restaurant because the food was delicious and the staff was extremely friendly. I had the roast pork special, and it came with a side of beans, plantains, bread, and yellow rice. My boss insisted on paying so I can't help in terms of price, but the food was amazing. The portions were big so I had leftovers to take home. El Mofongo definitely isn't fancy, but don't let that deter you. We lucked up on this place when we took our defective Comcast modem to the store near there. We were going to look for a place to eat, and saw it and thought we'd give it a try. I like the way they have some of their foods displayed in a case so you can see what you're getting. I ordered the roasted pork, rice and pidgeon peas and plantains. What an amazing flavor that I remember as a child when we lived in Puerto Rico. They have an unusual hot sauce on the table that goes well on the rice. My husband had the cuban sandwich which he also liked. In fact, he liked it so much, he wanted to try the shredded flank steak the next day with black beans and rice. Also totally good. I ate dinner here yesterday after reading the many positive reviews. I was Not disappointed. The owner was very friendly. The Cubano Especial and Empanadas were great. The fried sweet plantains were by far the best I've had. So flavorful. Also, they make their own hot sauce. The food certainly did not need the addition of hot sauce as it was great without it. However, the sauce had such a unique and fantastic flavor that I ended up adding quite a bit as I kept wanting more. Next time I am in town, I will definitely be returning here for another great meal! read more

Terrible Terrible Terrible the yellow rice was burnt like they mixed in the rice that was stuck to the bottom of the pan and the steak had no authentic flavor. My Wife had the Cuban mix and said is was the worst she ever had, because it tasted like bologne. The guava and cheese pastelito seemed good at first it was crispy and warm but it left a terrible after taste in my mouth. The food is great, its the closes thing to authentic cuban, dominican and puertorican food you can find in all of Orange Park, maybe even all of Jacksonville. It's like having my grandma cook for me, I love it :) I will drive all the way from Fleming Island for a Cuban Sandwich and a Malta, Publix only wishes it can make as good a Cuban sandwich as this place! It may not be the fanciest place, but these people make it feel like home.
