First time going here. I like the place. Friendly staff, food arrived quickly. It was kind of warm in there though. I had the cuban sandwich on the advice of a regular customer. Tasty. The hot sauce on the tables was good too. A previous reviewer noted no water although I had bottled water and one of my coworkers had a cup of ice water. Maybe they added it after her review? I can't believe I passed by this restaurant probably 1000 times and never stopped to go in. I decided to try something different for breakfast today and they were showing an open sign on the yelp app. My breakfast plate was delicious. I had the mangú which is bash green plan Taine, two eggs, Dominican pork sausage and salami. I love plantains but I have never had mast plantains and onions. It was delicious. I can't wait to come back here and try some other dishes. I would definitely recommend this place to all of my family and friends. Well it's as close as like mom makes as I can get. The food is awesome and the service is outstanding. Definitely a great place for some Latin food. I had the pernil with yellow rice and red beans. It was awesome. I took my friend from work as well. It was his first time. He loved it and he hasn't ate Latin food before. To think we almost went to chick fil a. Now I have nothing against chick fil a bit I do love my Latin food. Especially being puerto rica . Next time I want to try their Cuban sandwiches and Cuban coffee. Maybe it was an off day for mofongo because when I ordered it for takeout it was extremely dry. I'm a big fan of the dish so I try was disappointing. I'll go back to try some other items before deciding or rating lower. I'll try mofongo again to see if I get the same result. read more

This place was muy delicioso!! I may be what looks like your average gringa but I love Latino culture as in music, language and especially food! Of course, I had to try the mofongo since that is the name of the place. Their mofongo con picadillo was tasty but I'm used to the mofongo being mixed with the filling. This mofongo was basically an upside down bowl of mashed plantain and the picadillo was dumped around it. Now it was very tasty and I will be back but it was just different. I also got a mango batida (milkshake) which was delish and vanilla flan. Ayyyye que rico! I was on the way home from school with Jonathan G. and all of a sudden El Mofongo came up. We were talking about places we wanted to eat at. Jon said that he's been there an he's a fan. If you didn't know, I am addicted to Cafe Con Leche! (Strong Cuban coffee with milk and usually heaps of sugar) and I have been researching spots in Jax that have it) A couple of days later, he calls me and says you want some Cafe Con Leche? I said hell to the yeah! I only had a 30 minute window cause I had class, but he made it to my house like a Domino's Pizza delivery! but it wasn't delivery, it was Digiorno lol. I run outside my house, he opens the car door and bam! El Mofongo bags and boxes of goodies all over! He hands me my Cafe Con Leche and I say "So yeah what else you got here?" he starts opening boxes like he's trying to sell me jewelry! Hands me a couple different pastries. Guava and a Cream Cheese filled one. Mofongo's Cafe Con Leche is on point. Not too sweet and just strong enough to give you a buzzz. I have been back twice since then. The crazy thing is the Cafe Con Leche is only $1-$2 depending on the size you get. Whole Foods is like $5, you can't beat it! You know you've had good coffee because on you'll be singing every song on the radio on the way home...well for me at least! When you walk in here, you really get transported into a different place. It feels just like Puerto Rico. The table set up, the decorations, the language, the vibe. The owner, at least I think he's the owner reminds me of Tony Montana from Scarface. He's got that strong accent, he's pretty friendly, but you can tell he doesn't play any games hahahah. The first time I came, I got the Baked Chicken with Yellow Rice. It comes with black or red beans, a couple of sweet plantains, and a couple pieces of french bread with butter on it. It's the perfect balance of food and you never get tired of the one flavor. It was like $10 and then I got a couple of Guava pastries. The owner told me that on Mondays this Baked Chicken entree was only $6. I kept that in mind and I came back on a future Monday. It always hits the spot! I don't not usually eat this type of food, so when I do it's a palate refresher. It's like when you haven't had peanut butter and jelly for awhile, then you eat it and you say: YES LAWD! They have different $6 specials everyday. The Roast Pork (Pernil) comes highly recommended from the owner and my Cuban friend. I say go on a Monday! My second time here and this time I tried the shrimp mofongo. OMG!! it was so so so so so, did I say so? Well so so good!! They put at least 12-14 pieces of medium sized shrimp in the mofongo that was place on a bed of salad, with this shrimp sauce that was amazing. I broke open the mofongo and the mixture of the smashed plantains, the shrimp and the shrimp sauce was perfecto mundo! I have to say I really enjoyed this particular mofongo and recommend it. My boyfriend and I got takeout from here today and I wish I didn't. Not only was the food DISGUSTING, after eating maybe three bites of food, I found a bug walking around INSIDE of styrofoam container. I will never return, and you should NEVER come here either. read more

There are not a lot of Cuban or Dominican restaurants in Jacksonville and I've been wanting to check this place out for a while. We tried a few things off their menu. The good: Cuban sandwich. Oh man this sandwich was delicious and I'm not a big fan of Cuban sandwiches. We tried the Cubana Especial ($6.25) and it definitely warrants a return trip on its own. Beef empanadas ($2.25) were also a favorite of ours. We ordered two more to take home. The food comes out piping hot and with a consistent temperature throughout. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Appears to be family-owned and every age was helping to make sure the place stayed clean and the customers dining in were happy. Prices were fair and on point to what you'd expect around Jacksonville. No fountain drinks but can sodas and a decent selection of import drinks are available, including Kola. The bad: nothing was really terrible here. The mangu and yellow rice were lacking in flavor, but nothing their homemade hot sauce couldn't fix. Food is served on paper plates, which is just smart for overhead costs -- we didn't mind at all but others might. Owner let us know ahead of ordering that the seafood in the seafood mofongo was from a frozen bag mix. Mainly mussels and squid in ours. It was our least favorite item and we couldn't seem to enjoy the taste of it all. It appears they also offer catering and special order cakes. Will definitely return to try out more sandwiches and to snag a few beef empanadas. read more

We went on a Friday and had the special which is roasted pork (lechon). OMG, it was succulent in every sense of the word... tender, juicy, and full of flavor! We almost missed out on this delicious Dominican eatery, their old location is visible from the street, and it's empty. Their new location is just further in the strip mall, we found out by calling. I loved my chicken and rice, the Chief of Staff's Cuban sandwich was just as tasty. The "eclears" for dessert went well with the espresso, you must try this place out if you're in the Jax area. We accidentally missed the noon rush, but that's the way to do it, come in around 2ish when things slow down a bit. Within easy strike distance from the Navy base, and in fact a couple of servicemen came in while were here. It's a simple, casual place, but the staff makes up for an island rate of service (not hurried) with a genuine friendliness and deserved pride in product. read more

The dinning room was very dirty. All the tables had crumbs and the floor was dirty. Lost of dust in the windows. I was actually very scared to try the food because I began to imagine what the kitchen must be like. However I decided to try the pork roast and arroz con frijoles. When my food came out it was very hot, as if it has been microwave. The roast was a bit too greasy and the beans in the rice were very dry. The food was also served in foam plates which was a bit tacky. But overall the price in the food was affordable. However I'm not sure if it's affordable because they know it's not good. read more

Came here a while back. It's always been on my radar. I finally made it in and got the Mangu breakfast. Sausage, salami, fried cheese, two eggs and a mound of mashed green plantain and topped with the tastiest onions ever. They are slightly salty and coated in olive oil. I have never had this type of breakfast and yes, it's quite a lot. I loved every bite. Even when I couldn't eat any more. Well, I'm back for the second time today. Getting the same exact thing. I'm waiting now. A small mass of people have come in since we got here. People coming and going and a few have even taken a seat. We shared a cheese and guava pastry. A serving of tres leches cake for later. I snagged a menu to look over and perhaps find something if like to try next time. My son loves Cuban sandwiches and we might try one next time. However, this is a Puerto Rican and Dominican spot. My neighbors growing up were Puerto Rican and his wife made some bomb rice and pigeon peas. 1st off Customer service was outstanding!! From the Guy at the register to the mother, and grandmother that served me at my table. Totally 100% caring, and wanted to make sure I was happy. My wife and I ordered (1) Beef Empenada, (1) Chicken Empenada, a piece of Tres Leches cake, and the Roasted Pork Mofongo for us to split. HOLY COW the Tres Leches is the best I have ever had...Period hands down.. I had to soak the empenadas in the hot sauce that is on the table to give them flavor. The Mofongo was very bland, and the roasted pork could have used allot more flavor. I will be back because of their customer service and Tres Leches, however I will be ordering something different. read more

The roasted pork served in the Friday lunch special (with rice, beans, fried plantains and bread) is some of the best pork I have ever had. The seasoning is simple, but delicious. If you can get some crispy skin, take it as it's amazing and melts in your mouth with a burst of flavor. The chicken is my favorite but, the beef is good also. I get it with black beans and rice. To drink I get orchata or tamarind juice. The desserts great too. He has daily specials or you can order from the full menu. He has a house made hot sauce that is very good. It's has a lot of flavor not just hot. Either way you will win eating here!
