It's a small place and usually busy so expect a wait. The food is ok for not having to drive far and much better than the one in Acton. I have been about 5 times now and it gets better each time. Decent Mexican food, but Huipil suffers due to poor service. The waitstaff and table bussers don't seem I'll tempered, but would benefit from customer service training. The last two times I was there the server said "Do you know what you want?" and did not speak to me again. At a minimum it would have been nice if she checked back after I had tried my meal to see if it was okay and to refill my beverage. I and another table had difficulty getting her attention for refills and asked a girl bussing tables for water refills. She gestured to the waitress and said " she can do that." We went on a whim with friends and everyone loved it. The portions are big! I was definitely stuffed, to the point of not having room for dessert. Table had chips, salsa and guacamole - all tasted fresh made. chips were still warm and not overly salted, quac was chunky and well seasoned, salsa was perfect. I had the carne asada: the meat was perfectly seasoned, the beans were good, the salsa tasted like it was made from just picked tomatoes. Hubby had choriso dish, Friend 1 ordered tamales, friend 2 ordered flautas: everyone loved their meals. Atmosphere is casual, staff is very friendly and accommodating. Good place to take kids. I lived in California for 8 years and El Huipil is a classic taqueria. Very good quality food, not greasy or overloaded with cheese. Carnitas enchiladas in the red sauce was great, as were the tamales. Food is incredibly cheap, great little kid options (tacos, burritos). Service was very nice. Ambiance is friendly but certainly not high end. Still, overall experience is much better than Sierra's or Acapulco's. read more

My husband and I accidentally discovered El Huipil when parking our car in the center of Maynard, behind the new Walgreens- by the only parking "garage", beside Aubochon hardware. We find the food to be probably the best and most authentic Mexican we have experienced north of Mexico itself. I agree with the reviewer who said that the chef/owner really cares about pleasing his customers and is constantly working to improve his offerings. My husband had the pork adobo tonight and the flavor was outstanding. I had the chicken enchiladas with the chimi sauce (tangy tomato} and thoroughly enjoyed it. The chef/owner is delightful and let me taste his wonderful Mole' sauce which I loved and will have next time. Everything is freshly homemade- no "fast food" taste here. I highly recommend scouting El Huipil out and giving it a try. read more

So happy to have a decent Mexican restaurant in my own town! I've been happy with the vegetarian options (veggie burritos and enchiladas). My husband likes their super burritos (with carne asada) and our friends have had some yummy looking tamales. They've made the inside as colorful and *Mexican* restaurant feeling as they can, but it's a little sparse and "take-out" feeling. Fine for casual lunch or dinner, but not the fanciest decor. My only complaint would be with the guacamole. Tiny containers, and it seemed to have something (sour cream?) mixed in...perhaps to make the avocado go further?? Top tip: Order the lengua (tongue) as your meat choice in burritos. YUM! It's not on the menu, as far as I can see, but they always have it when we ask and it is always tender and very tasty. My kids won't settle for anything else; we always end up ordering the super burritos with lengua and guacamole and are always glad we did. Such a fun family restaurant! Great, authentic Mexican food! I've yet to find anything on the menu I don't like. Ask for the ceviche - it's so simple, but so good. The salsa, pico de gallo, and habanero sauce are very fresh and flavorful. The habanero sauce is spicy, but also complex and delicious - not just "hot". We ate here tonight on a busy Saturday night with a party of six and they were able to get us in quite quickly and immediately began serving us. We were diligently waited on and the food (& margaritas) were outstanding! The menu had a lot of variety with authentic flare. Our waitress Karen was knowledgeable, efficient, kind, and fun. Pretty good Mexican in Maynard! There were at least 8 people in and out during the time that we stopped in for take-out. We ordered a chicken burrito and a chicken super burrito. Both were tasty. Also got the chips and salsa. The salsa was good but could use a bit more cilantro and kick to it. The guacamole was excellent and a nice addition to the burrito. The chef was very diligent about checking to make sure our order was correct before we left. The prices are great and it's a cute little place. Hope this one sticks around! read more

Went here to try it out bcause we heard it was good. maynard- please get some good food places. the chicken in all the taco/enchilades we bought was way overcooked and dry and tasted like it had been there a while. the tortilla was soggy and they all fell apart. the steak tacos were the only thing that tasted decent. oh yes and we found out later that they have a bad habbit of charging you for sour cream and not giving you any - like what happend to us. read more

Hi, I would first like to say that some of the people writing these reviews have no idea what Mexican food is! If you want a hard shell taco, Go to Taco Bell! If you want real mexican food, Go to El Huipil! I have been to and lived in Mexico, and El Huipil makes pretty good, authentic Mexican! My family and I went there and had different tacos, Carne Asada, Enchiladas Verdes(green) and Mole. We also tried the Flan. Everything was great and the owners were extremely friendly! We have since gone back again, and continue enjoying everything ordered. The refried beans are great. My only comlaint would be something that most of the complainers here liked, the Rice...not crazy about it. Over all, the food is great and very authentic! I have recomended many friends. read more

There's not a lot of good mexican food in the immediate area, so I really appreciate El Huipil. The ingredients are very fresh and clean tasting, with somewhat understated spicing. The place has more of an atmosphere of a pizzeria converted into a taqueria, but it's clean and tastefully decorated given the space limitation. Because it's located within Maynard's municipal parking lot you wouldn't even know it exists if you were driving through downtown -- but there's plenty of parking! I asked the owner about beer and wine, and was told that they weren't able to get a licence but they did secure a BYOB permit, so you can bring beer and wine with you. I've now worked my way around their menu and have become more and more impressed with their food! The dishes have been consistently excellent. I highly recommend the tacos al pastor, flautas, tacos de carnitas (very good braised pork shoulder), the carne asada, tacos de lengua, and the tamales yucatecas (these were really flavorful). Both their burritos and super burritos are good. As I say, their spicing is understated and I think a bit more cumin punch to the braised meats and more picante kick to the salsa would be a appreciated. However I really appreciate that it's not "glob" mexican, with a bunch of cheese melted on top of a slop of beans a rice. Everything I've tried has had nice flavor without being greasy. The owners seem very nice. Since you order your food at the counter and they bring it to you, there's no tipping. In fact, there's not even a tip jar or I certainly would have thrown in a couple of dollars to show my appreciation. I hope this place continues to grow and improve since it will save me the drive to Nashua (Tacos Colima) or Waltham (Taqueria Mexico). My one suggestion for the owners --besides making their salsa spicier!-- would be to put in some booth seating and find some creative ways to make the space seem more intimate and less pizzeria-like. UPDATE: They just got booth seating, nice colorful table cloths and various other Oaxacan decorations. It looks MUCH better and more inviting as a dinner destination. Good for them! Also, their salsa now seems a bit spicier. I'm now changing my review from 4 to 5 stars -- and I hope they keep improving. I love this place! read more

This is a great mom and pop Mexican restaurant. The service is fast and the owners are very pleasant and friendly. Good food, particularly the enchiladas. The best part is they now offer the best coffee in Maynard., and you can have it to go. Very handy if you have to head back to work after a quick lunch. read more

I have lived in Maynard since these guys opened. Used to be a nice inexpensive place for decent Mexican food. Now they have radically upgraded their interior and have a new menu. With no prices on their online menu - what's up with that? I ordered a burrito for take out. It was ready when I went to pick it up. Almost $12! For a regular burrito! No wonder they do not post their prices! The burrito was ok (a bit dry) but certainly nothing special. Time for a new Mexican place. read more

I get takeout at this place about 3 times a month and it's great. I usually get the super carnitas chile verde or the Pork Chimi and the food is always consistent from week to week. I haven't strayed too far into the menu. The soft taco's can be hit or miss sometimes but I have only ordered those a few times. The prices are also very reasonable. They recently added some new booths as well for dining in and the service is usually fast. read more
