Being from maynard since I was a kid, I've always tried to be a patron to the local restaurants. Tonight I was in the mood for Mexican. Since Bueno y Sano left a few months ago, there hasn't been another Mexican restaurant other than El Huipil. So I figured id give them a try since a lot of people in town likes them. First I tried to place a take out order on the way home from work. I called twice. Both times I let the phone ring at least 3 minutes. No answer. So I drove downtown and went in to find a half occupied restaurant. With no AC to boot. On a 90 degree night. I walked up to the bar to order. Again probably waited 4 minutes until the bartender acknowledged me. Placed my order. Got 2 burritos, an enchilada and 2 orders of churros. With tip it came to $96. A little ridiculous for Mexican take out but I figured if its that good, then ill pay the money. I get home to find my burritos missing 3 items that I ordered. I ordered a chicken burrito with rice, grilled onions, lettuce, Pico de gayo, and hot sauce. I got a grilled quesadilla with chicken rice and lettuce only. None of the other things and it was grilled. You dont grill a burrito. I've never had a grilled burrito. Its a quesadilla. It was so dry and bland, I dumped the 2md one away. My wife got the enchilada with red sauce. There was no red sauce. And the rice was again, so bland. The only good thing were the churros. But at $12.50 for 6, definitely not worth it. After $96, im disgusted and pretty upset. For that money, I could have gone to a sit down meal somewhere. I honestly dont know why this place is so highly recommended. Ive been to A LOT of Mexican restaurants and by far this one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Ill keep heading into the city for my Mexican food. read more

I have been here a few times since my last review and tried two new things. First, the tofu tacos. They were meh. Three stars. The tofu was just raw tofu chunks that had been marinated but not actually cooked in the marinade as far as I could tell. The marinade itself was tasty but if they had been pan-fried and a little crispy on the outside it would have been much better. Second, the calabacitas. New favorite dish unlocked! Zucchini stuffed with diced veggies and smothered in melted cheese. Comes with a side of rice and beans. So good! Service is always good and ambiance is fun and friendly. I'm on the fence with this review, because the food was, OK. Not the best not the worst. The place was relatively empty. Actually we were the only ones... but I do find it extremely overpriced for lunch, particularly considering where it's located and what it is. Corn tortillas are homemade (but so are Señor Taco and Taco Gato) and the carnitas and carne asada are good. Chicken in mole dish is good but not great at $22... ! Rice and refried beans are good. The churros were on point but the "diet coke" was questionably not the real thing. Service was super sweet. All in all good. But not a place I need to come back to. Which is disappointing, because I had this place on my sites for the longest time and had high expectations. read more

We happened to find this place on the way back from the Discovery Center in Actin. This place is awesome! Don't miss the guacamole and margaritas!! My husband had the fajitas and I had the chicken enchiladas. (The red enchilada sauce is flavorful and packs a punch!). The kids loved it too. Will definitely be back! read more

Ambience was nice, casual and lively. I ordered a vegetarian stirfry, which although the veggies were fresh, the flavor was lackluster for being a "Mexican" restaurant. Mixed feelings here. We like to dine outside, even before all this CV19 stuff. The first visit here a few years back kinda gave us a bad taste in our mouth and kept us away until this year. We arrived to a nearly empty restaurant with the intentions of trying out what was then their relatively new patio area. We were told that if we wanted to dine there we would have to sit inside as the server was all alone. Usually I would understand that, but there was no one in the restaurant so it turned us off and we left. They have greatly enlarge their outside dining options and even added an outside bar. So we have tried twice in the last month and both times we have enjoyed our visits. The service can be a bit slow especially waiting for drinks, but they are worth waiting for and the food is good. Every table gets one complimentary salsa with chips (both good portions) The guacamole is very good, the El Huipil wings are tasty. The El Adobado (grilled pork) is amazing and a must try. The ultimate margarite (your choice of Tequila) choose wisely and always choose Don Julio is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. We have been going to El Huipil, in Maynard ever since it opened years ago. The food was nice addition to our rounds of ethic foods, but just above average. We went last night and I will have to say the food was excellent. I had the Chicken Mole and it was cooked to perfection. The chicken was very very moist and the mole was delicious, not tasting burnt like some can. I always know when I've had a good meal, because the next day I want to go back and have all over again! I can't say enough good things about this place! Not only was the food delicious, but every single staff member I spoke to was friendly and helpful. I had the task of providing food for a group of 20 people, which was somewhat daunting...but Adriana took excellent care of our order and helped me select the best options for our group! The prices were reasonable and it was SO good. Also, when I went to pick up the order, the margaritas being brought to a table looked AHmazing! Stopped in El Huipil for a taco and margaritas lunch. We arrived and greeted by one server who was taking care of it all. Chips and Salsa were hot and fresh, the first batch is free. The salsa was a mild diced tomatoes chunky style not puréed. I ordered a seasoned chicken breast with rice and beans and salad. It was a typical plate that you could expect from Mexican-American establishment. My wife had grilled veggie tacos with zucchini and squash, she enjoyed very much. They make an in-house hot sauce that was spicy and flavorful that added some kick to the chicken. Also the margaritas are great and made fresh without a syrupy mix. I don't give one stars. I hate doing it because a place really has to hit rock bottom for that to happen. But the service was, honest to God, that bad. I used to come here when it first opened and it was awesome. It has fallen in my opinion. As a server myself, supposedly I'm supposed to be more patient because I understand the stress of the job. But it's the opposite in that I know what should take long and shouldn't take long. With an empty dining room, it should not take 10 minutes to receive menus. It should not take 15 minutes to receive Margaritas and I should not have to ask for silverware when my food comes. Additionally, they screwed up my order. I can't eat spicy food and specifically requested no hot sauce, yet my plate was plastered in it. I didn't ask for it to be fixed because we had already been there am hour. To management: Fix your service. You'll lose what you once had. I almost walked out on you guys without paying a dime, but my friend talked me out of it. My family went here one summer evening not to long ago. We got chips and guacamole and salsa for the table which was delicious and they did not charge us! My dad got shrimp enchiladas which he ate every bite. My mom got veggie quesadillas and I got a veggie burrito, they were both delicious and I took half the burrito home. Great food and great service at a great price! The restaurant is colorful and clean. You order your food at the counter and then they bring your food to the table. I ordered enchiladas with shredded beef in a red sauce The salsa was fresh, fresh fresh. Yum! The shredded beef was so tasty. The red sauce almost looks like a mole sauce - its dark but that is because it is roasted red pepper based and not tomato based. Really great. First if you're looking for nachos with cheese sauce and strawberry margaritas, then this isn't your place. If you are looking for some good inexpensive authentic Mexican food, then this place is it. It's not a fancy restaurant, It's classic Mexican taqueria. I've traveled extensively through Mexico and while sitting there waiting for my food, felt like I was back to a time outside of Cobah, when I was waiting for a bus in the Yucatan. I highly recommend this place for lunch or a quick dinner. To the folks who disparage this place for not having a liquor license or It's location.. come on people! Let me start with the food is good, authentic tasting Mexican food, a good option for lunch if your in the area. They now have a full bar and are working at being a more sit down service restaurant then they have in the past - nice improvement. The one drawback (hence the 3 stars) is the place is COLD - obviously that won't be an issue with the warm weather coming up but right now it effects my choice on coming back or not (won't be back until it warms up outside - sorry but it really is uncomfortable because of it - and I'm fully grown man!) you know it's bad when the owners and servers are wearing coats and sweaters while working! read more

This place is hit or miss for sure. Our first experience there was TERRIBLE. We went in and the waitress asked us what we wanted to drink and we told her water and she brought us bottles of water! I believe she also charged for chips and salsa, even though we also ordered food. We assumed at restaurants things like tap water and chips and salsa are included. But that was many years ago before they made their upgrades. Some of the items on their menu are very good -- amazing ceviche, for instance. Their burritos are just bad. I don't know how you can screw up a burrito, but they do. Since finding my groove here, I just order the same thing which I know they do well (enchiladas, tacos). They still do charge for every little thing. I hate how they ask if you want "chips and salsa and guacamole" and you have to clarify or get charged extra. A friend was once charged for guac that was supposed to come with his meal. Drinks are good, but expensive. Service is consistently bad, but friendly! I have seen the same waitresses for many years. Ask for hot sauce right away, you'll never see her again! When they have the guy doing music, he is amazingly good! It's always a plus. read more

Definitely not a bad burrito joint. Went the day it opened, and have been there twice since then. Doesn't have quite the variety that some competitors may have (Chipotle, Moe's, Boloco), but makes up for it with an authentic Mexican style and taste. (Unlike many modern burrito joints who American-ize) I've been sticking w/ the chicken burrito. Just tried their hot sauce yesterday for the first time. Took a small taste with my finger before the burrito came out, and thought it would be a tad too hot for my taste. However, once mixed with the beans, chicken & cheese, it tasted great!!
