Hidden gem in Rancho Murieta! I was here for a work training and stayed at The Murieta Inn and Spa. This was within walking distance and so I did not have any expectations. Service was great! The ladies were friendly, attentive and quick! Food was delicious! -Very reasonably priced and portion was huge. We had leftovers for the night. -$2.50 up charge to change meat to carnitas. The carnitas was fried crispy inside the chimichanga. It was interesting to see the dollop of sour cream under melted cheese. -Chips and salsa + beans were immediately served when we sat down. Chips were even warm! -The horchata was too sweet so I just asked for extra ice to water it down a bit but still really sweet. read more

I was here with a group of 16 people last night. The service was great--our pre dinner drinks came out quickly, as did our food. Everyone was happy with their choices, and several people had portions so big that they had food left to take home. The bill was accurate too. We sat inside--it was very festive--and they also had a cute outdoor patio. We go out a lot as a large group, and sometimes things are not so smooth, but El Gallo and the staff really delivered. We came on a VERY busy Saturday night (competition at local venue, I think) but the opened a table for us, took our orders and got us our food really quickly. Our server, Rosie, was engaging, informative, and friendly, never made us feel rushed or hurried and my order was not usual (can't do cilantro). The food was wonderful and spot-on! My BF asked for grilled jalapeños and they brought like 4 all charred and sliced - perfect. We will be back again and again. read more

Straight up good classic Mexican food. Quiet inside, louder groups can sit outside, full bar (but strangely limited beer selection). They checked on our very large group every few minutes to make sure we were well taken care of. read more

I've lived out here for over 30 years and have eaten here many times. Many years ago, it was pretty good when the original owner was running the restaurant. The servers are really sweet and friendly, and the atmosphere is great-small town feel where everyone is happy to be hanging out with family and friends in a comfortable, community setting. Try the sweet, frozen-slushee style margaritas in pretty much any flavor, they don't skimp on the tequila. The carnitas, chile relleno and refried beans are pretty good, and the food comes out quickly every time. I would give it 5 stars, but the prices seem to be a bit out of control on most everything including $4.99 for a side of cheese and the super burrito is $10 extra for carne asada ($30?). Most likely because we don't have a lot of options in the community, supply and demand. If you mind the cost, pay attention to prices and the add ons and extras or you'll be unpleasantly surprised when the bill comes. read more

As my daughter & son in law live in Rancho Murieta we have been to El Gallo multiple times over the years. Their service is always great & the food is always very good. The beef tacos, fajitas (my daughter & I share & there's enough leftovers for another dinner for us), are a couple of my favorites besides the really good chips, salsa & bean dip. My grandson goes for the bean & cheese burrito (no sauce, he's 9) & my granddaughter will sometimes go for a cheese quesadilla. (At 7 she doesn't eat much). Always an easy place for an easy meal; it's welcoming, it's familiar, and the staff is nice. Sometimes you crave Mexican and you get a side of chips. Sometimes you just go because you crave the chips and end up with a side of burrito. I always ask for the spicier salsa and mix it with the regular salsa. This is a solid little place nestled in a quiet (mostly) business park in Rancho Murieta. They have a full service bar, a great patio near the ponds and waterfalls that would be great for a summer evening and the food is pretty decent. My wife had the taco salad and I got the two taco plate. We were both satisfied with our food and the highlight was probably the delicious dips that came with the chips. The only drawbacks I would see with this restaurant are that the service was a little slow (it wasn't busy, as we were one of three tables) and it's just a touch expensive. It's possible that a Monday lunch hour doesn't staff more than one waiter, so don't quote me on their service during peak hours. The only other detractor is that their menu needs some love. The food feels pretty limited, no descriptions about what comes in burritos, on the tacos, etc. and they didn't have a la carte options for things like the tacos. I'd definitely consider it a bit of a hidden gem that could do one or two things and become a super popular restaurant. Definitely give them a try! read more

We ordered food to go tonight and I have to say it was excellent. We ordered fajita shrimp, fajita, steak, bacon wrapped shrimp, and beef nachos. We brought it home to watch the 49er game with our kids. It was so delicious. Everything was perfect and the service was wonderful. Always a good time here at El Gallo! Thor made me his special jalapeño margarita to die for! Spicy with a bit of sweetness and tang of lime- and a tajine rim! Thanks Thor! Very yummy and the service is great .we love to sit outside on the patio on warm nights.

I had a nice dinner here, but there was nothing exceptional about it. The food is quite bland, American-style. Chile Verde was fatty and not spicy at all. The Top Shelf margarita was quite sweet, though extra limes helped. Service was a mixture of good and indifferent. The ambiance is ok, as there is an attractive outdoor patio area I did like the salsa, and the bean dip they served with the chips. And I appreciate how the food was not over-salted, that part of the seasoning was just right. I would go back, as it's the only Mexican food in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to find it again. read more

They have outside patio seating, indoor dining and a bar area. Cute place at the back of the strip. Their frozen blackberry margs are DELISH! They have good bean chip and salsa and the service was excellent. The only downside was that it was fairly warm outside, which is why we decided to eat inside, but the AC wasn't on so it was a bit stuffy inside. I has a chicken taco al a Carte and my husband had the carnitas platter. It was large and very tasty. We actually took most of it home and had 2 more lunches with the leftovers! Visited el gallo this evening. I applaud the attentive service and kind staff. Food was seasoned well, the beans and chips did not disappoint. Portions are huge. Plenty food to take home. Since eating inside is bad...but eating inside a tent is okay...they did a great job at making it a comfortable temperature! I got this to go, it was made right on time. They are super friendly. I ordered take out the other night and wanted to give this Mexican spot a try. Here we go! So I ordered the Beef Quesadilla (a la carte) and it came with Guac, sour cream, and some other stuff. I tried the Guac and it was really good, perfect balance to it, not too limey or too salty. It was excellent! (I'm not a fan of sour cream) Now the Quesadilla, it lacked a bit of flavor with it, I couldn't taste the flavor off the meat when I would bite into it. But the good thing about this was how big it was and it filled me up (when I was starving). But it did lack some meat on the whole Quesadilla itself, I would bite into a few spots and get just tortilla and cheese (no bueno) So was this worth $10.99, yes it is, if and when they add more flavor to the meat and probably give a better portion on the meat. Stopped in for lunch after hiking at Deer Creek Preserve. Ordered an enchilada a la carte, which was delivered very quickly. Tender chicken, flavorful sauce, and very filling. Felt like I had eaten an entire meal, rather than just an a la carte item. (Maybe due to the chips with the black bean dip we had while waiting for our meal; but I didn't eat that many chips, did I?). Since I have enjoyed a few pleasant meals here lately, I thought it was time to update my review. I came here on a Sunday and the service was horrid. We waited 50 minutes from the time we ordered to the time we got our food. I got an enchilada a la carte and i could've made a better enchilada myself. No flavor whatsoever. The only redeeming thing about this restaurant is the chips and salsa. El Gallo is easily the best restaurant in Rancho Murieta. The food is way better than the hotel's restaurant or the BBQ place. They have the best carnitas in all of Sacramento. Nice and crispy, like carnitas are supposed to be. Some places just give you stewed pork and call it carnitas. If you want REAL carnitas, come get the Carnitas plate at El Gallo. Or the carnitas chimichanga. Mmmm good stuff. They also have Camarones Vallarta which are big juicy shrimp wrapped in bacon and deep fried and then covered in melty cheese. OMG so good. Speaking of melty cheese, don't skip out on the Queso Fundido which is melted Monterey Jack with crumbled up chorizo mixed in. It's the best cheese dip I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. No processed cheese here. They can get really busy some Friday and Saturday nights, especially if there is an event happening at the Rancho Murieta Equestrian Center. Give this place a try.
