Chicken enchiladas with red sauce
Jeannette C.

We drive through this area often on our way to Tahoe and have been on the hunt for a solid Mexican restaurant. This spot caught our eye so we decided to give it a try without checking reviews first. Walking in I wasn't sure what to expect. The front dining area was empty, and the staff were all gathered. It was early on a Monday, so I figured maybe it gets busier later... We were seated in another dining room, which actually had a few other diners. We ordered chicken enchiladas, mine were the verdes (Swiss-style) and my husband got the red sauce version. We also added a side of guacamole. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to our hopes. The guacamole was missing something, maybe lime, cilantro, or seasoning, it just tasted flat. My enchiladas had a strong, almost sour aftertaste from the green sauce. The rice was overly seasoned, and the beans were just okay. The red enchiladas didn't stand out either. It all felt like it was quickly thrown together, hoping the cheese and sauce would do the heavy lifting. For the price we expected much better quality. It was overpriced for what felt like cafeteria style food. That said, the host and waitress were friendly, attentive, and welcoming. So while the service was great, the food just didn't do it for us.

More menu, typical Mexican fare. Apologies for the glare.

700TH REVIEW! Colina de Oro (Gold Hill) is an average run of the mill Mexican restaurant. For a Tuesday, it is the only place open to eat for many miles around, so in one regard it is good to have it here. As far as looks and ambiance, this place has seen its day and definitely needs a cleaning and fresh makeover. It looks very dated and a little ragged at the edges. The bar seemed quite active, and the rest of the place had a few patrons, but not many. Chips and salsa, plus water, was brought to the table right away. The salsa was good, chips mainstream. I also ordered a blended margarita, which was rather bland and lacked any punch or alcohol. It just tasted like lime punch. The menu is what one would expect and all the usual offerings. I decided to have the Chile Verde entree dinner, with rice, beans, and my choice of flour tortillas. The pork was OK, again nothing too special. All of it was middle-of-the-road Mexican fare. The service was friendly and cordial enough, yet seemingly bored. So, with that, if you're hungry on a Tuesday in this part of Amador County, this might be your only option. Just don't expect much other than ordinary.

Very disappointed with my dinner. Ordered Beef Taquitos, they were small flour tubes with what looked like mashed chicken, no flavor at all. My beans and rice were semi warm. Enjoyed the margarita but had a lot of ice. Our server never came back to check on us so when he brought the check I told him there was no beef in my taquitos. He made no explanation but said he'd take my meal off the check. He came back and it was off but he made no apology. My friends had no complaints so guess I ordered the wrong meal. Locals restaurant with bar. Maybe try next time in town as not many options.

Wire in my burrito

The people were super friendly and so was the server. But food didn't have much flavor and beans were terrible. And it's over priced for what you get. I took half my beef burrito to go and ate the rest today, while eating I found a piece of wire in my burrito. See pictures

Delicious!

First time here, ordered the veggie tacos. Loved it! Food, service and atmosphere is very nice. Recommend coming here, like an oasis in the desert.

Super friendly people and great Chili Reyeno. Stayed at Shenandoh Inn a few hundred yards away. Nice to have a good restaurant so close.

Both came with salad to start with plus chips that were efficiently refilled by our server. I'm on the keto diet, so I was looking for something that would work with that and the fajitas works great especially if you avoid the sides. It was plenty with the salad, though it also comes with a plate full of rice, beans, guacamole, and sour cream. The space was quiet for the most part- no TVs, or loud music. We went on a Tuesday and it wasn't too crowded. You walk in and whenever the server sees you, she'll instruct you to pick a table. The food comes fast- drinks followed by chips/salsa, followed closely by salad, and then main course. I was impressed at the steady stream of courses. They do seem to favor black pepper for their seasoning, but not to the point of it being obnoxious. I like perhaps a bit more "pop" to the flavor of the food if I'm being honest, but I generally like my food to be loud. The salsa is onion heavy (onions being the main flavor of the salsa), which would be a problem for some of my family members who are allergic. Payments are made at the table, though there is a register located at the front for takeout patrons. I was pleasantly impressed with this little restaurant and we will be coming back.

I honestly didn't think I was going to like this place. They were really busy and short staffed so service was slow. It took forever to get our drinks and chips. Not blaming the staff they were sweet and trying their hardest but it was a long wait which made me really close to leaving. I am so glad I didn't! Once the food came, all of the internal shade I was throwing went out the window and made me super happy that we waited it out. If you are any where near here. Heck if you are 100 miles away even, go try this place. Just be patient because they do get busy and I can see why.
