Strong 4 Stars....Go! In Greenville, Texas on business and heading back to Dallas about lunch time when I spotted El Fenix. I realized it's Wednesday, which means the decades-old enchilada special is in play. Good enough for me, so I whipped into the convenient parking and started for the door. After new ownership took the helm a few years ago, I've been a less frequent customer. It's been years since I've been to an out-of-town unit. So, in the spirit of adventurous eating, I wanted to try this place. Crowded because of the location and probably the Wednesday special,I found out the food probably has something to do with it also. The Tex-Mex here is excellent. From the initial complementary chips and salsa to the chili con carne-covered cheese enchiladas, everything was excellent. As a restaurant, If you're brave enough to offer a Brisket Enchilada option, that brisket has to be good! This, was NOT good. Tough, dry and chewy, 3 of THE things a good brisket would never be. I grew up in Dallas and El Felix was always a great Mexican Restaurant with many locations throughout the DFW metroplex. My mother's favorite location-as well as her favorite Mexican Restaurant-was the one in Downtown Dallas(the West End). The chips are so good here! The salsa has a unique flavor; the Chile con Queso I ordered was not extraordinary but the Chile Relleno was outstanding and smothered in salsa ranchero. I like them filled with ground beef. My server named Angel was excellent at keeping his eye on my every need! Overall, El Fenix is still a great Mexican Restaurant that you can count on to deliver. read more

It is not traditional, authentic Mexican food, so if that is what you are looking for, this isn't your place. If you are looking for great Tex mex, we loved it. The chips and salsa are light and airy and so good. We got an app, everything was great. I got fajitas, which were good, but when you add the fajita sauce (very spicy) it was outstanding. RUDE!!! Wednesday afternoon, not busy at 4 pm in the afternoon, I walked in to order to go, there was someone Coloring the chalkboard menu at the bar, who never acknowledged my presence. Then another waitress walked up to the bar, again no one spoke to me. I asked where I could order to go, she just pointed to the register, no one was even there. Food poisoning alert! Ordered the chicken fiesta burrito and threw it all up that night. I should have noticed the signs that the green sauce on my burrito was unusually salty. Also, there were small white feta cheese looking crumbles in my burrito, but didn't have the same taste or consistency of it. All really good signs that they are trying to preserve materials past their expiration. The food comes out on a hot plate, but the meat is indistinguishable between chicken and beef. Appetizer chips are a handful of tostitos tortilla chips, 75% of the bowl consists of crumbled up and smooshed chips. We love El Fenix for our TexMex cravings (and those Inca Gold margaritas). We have always had outstanding service from Dang (retiring ) and from Beto. I also want to commend the manager Mary Rhodes who never seems to have a day off and who is seriously concerned about customer service. In our opinion she does everything right managing the kitchen, the servers, the busers...and she rolls up her sleeves and helps her staff whenever needed. Thank you! Not to spicy, not to bland. However the amount of salsa given wasn't enough for a the amount of chips given. The enchilada dinner was okay. The rice was on the dry side, yet the beans were extremely saltly. The gravy on the enchiladas wasn't anything to rave about. The taco salad was nothing but lettuce. No exaggeration there was about 3/4 cup of ground beef in this meal. The rest was beans, lettuce, pico, sour cream and guacamole.
