I love this place! Hands down best Mexican food in the Northeast. I really love their Chile Relleno and their tamales.

And I thought I was pretty happy to have the other Mexican restaurant across the street nearby. We stopped into el Camalito with the kids in tow for a quick dinner. My daughter, who loves tamales but isn't a big fan of the sometimes spicy filling was overjoyed they had baby corn tamal on the menu. We chose a chicken burrito for our three year old, while my wife had a spinach and garlic burrito. I had the chorizo dinner and a beef empanada. First off, they fry their tamal. I am not sure if this is traditional to El Salvador or not, but it sure is tasty! My daughter loved it, and with the baby corn in the dough, it had the most wonderful sweetness to it. We couldn't resist stealing some from her plate. The burrito was huge for a kid size portion and the chicken was very flavorful. My wife loved the rich flavors of her burrito as well, although she did say I wouldn't want to kiss her with all the garlic (for her, that's a compliment to the food.). The chorizo was excellent, and I'd guess handmade. I might be wrong, but it certainly didn't have that feel of overly processed sausages that you buy in a store. The empanada had a nice filling of ground beef and potato and wasn't soggy or greasy. Portions were more than adequate. Loved the college kid friendly prices (which also happen to be friendly to parents with picky eaters and tight budgets). We will be back! read more

It's unfortunate for El Comalito that it isn't in the center of town. Most people, like myself, won't have the opportunity to try this place because they might not ever pass by or hear of it. Fortunately for me, I happened to hear about it and I drove over to give it a taste. It's past Amherst college, which not many UMass folk venture past, and it's easy to miss. I only knew where to find it because I read one of these other reviews. It's right behind the Hess station and Moan and Dove. You need to go left at that light or pull into Moan and Dove to park, but there should be plenty of parking. The front of the building is pretty interesting. I believe it was a concrete building, but with home sidings put on to make it appear like a house. It was cool. There's a pic-nic table outside that could be used for seating, but that's about it. There are no tables or waiter service at this place. However, there were some bar tops with stools on both sides of the small interior for people to sit and eat. It must be more of a take-out place. The inside is decorated with, what I can only assume, Salvadorean and Mexican decor (colors, artifacts, paintings, etc.). It gives it a very natural feel. They also don't have a menu on the walls, which most places do have. I found this odd, as I had to open a menu on the counter to decide, but maybe that's to urge people to call in the orders. I ordered the BBQ Pulled Pork Burrito, but I forgot to order sour cream. Either way, I really enjoyed it. It was well put together and had a good mix of the ingredients. Lots of places section it off so you only taste one item at a time, which I hate! Not only was it well mixed, but it's one of the only burritos I've ever had in Amherst that hasn't fallen apart in my hand. It was tightly packed! It was a little more than I wanted to handle at the time and couldn't finish the last couple of bites. I wrapped it all up with a fruit punch Jarrito, which is apparently Mexican Soda. It was pretty good, wish they sold it at more places. Overall, I'm definitely going to bring my friends here in the future. I enjoyed the place a lot as it was a fresh change of pace. Typically, the only options for this kind of food is Bueno y Sano, which is ok and Chipotle, which I've never been a big fan of but others are obsessed with. Though they also serve Mexican food, the real highlight is the authentic and fantastic Salvadoran side of the menu. Superb pupusas and the best sweet plantains (maduros) I have had, including in Miami. Reasonably priced and great. This is basically a take-out operation; also ideal for bringing over to the Moan and Dove right around the corner. UPDATE: the restaurant has expanded and now has plenty of tables. Coming from California I'm pretty picky with my Tacos and Enchiladas. This place I shall return. Very good. We ordered almost one of everything. Shrimp Tacos were Awesome! Tongue Tacos, Carnitas amazing and guacamole ! Chicken Tacos were a little salty but I'd order them again. Cheese and Cheese/Jalapeño Pupusas were our Favorites! I'm happy to spread the word.... Oh I wanted so much to give this place five stars but I just couldn't it wouldn't let me. During our lunchtime visit two other parties came and sat down at tables just a little bit after we did. One was a party of two and the other was a party of four. And my friend and I were a party of two. Yet the party of two that arrived after us and the party of four that also arrived after us all got their food before us. WELL before us! In fact the party of two next to us not only got their order before us, they had already finished it and left before we even got ours. And the party of four was served about 10- 15 minutes before we got our food. In addition to this forgetting about us, they ran out of cold soda. And the only lukewarm soda they had was Diet Coke even though when they took our order before those other two parties I mentioned they had said that they DID have regular Coke. Thus the only conclusion that I can come to is that they literally gave our Coke to someone else. Because when they served our food they were all out of it. So my friend had no soda to drink and room temperature water while I had room temp Diet Coke and a cup of ice and room temp water. Eventually they brought our appetizer of chips and salsa out. When they did I mentioned about the other parties being served well before us even though they came in after us. They said well sorry and that was it. No more explanation. So I guess this restaurant which used to be takeout only still has some learning to do when it comes to running a sitdown restaurant. Our food was finally served (30 minutes after ordering it!) about 10 minutes after we got our chips and salsa which was good and hot. Our orders were fulfilled well and the food was, well, perfect. Fresh ingredients. Very delicious! But even though our server asked me if I needed hot sauce and said she would get some for me she forgot to do so. After five minutes I had to get up and ask for it again. Even though when our original order was taken I DID mention that I wanted hot sauce when he asked me. So she not only forgot my verbal request, she also missed the written food order request. Not good. Our server didn't seem to have the full command of English that the male employee behind the counter had. In spite of all these mistakes made by them, I still do like the restaurant and the food was great. So after a while I will give them another chance and hopefully by then they'll have things in order. read more

Oh damn! This place had some of the best Mexican food I've had in a long time. Living in DC, I've been deprived of good Mexican for about 8 years, and was pleasantly surprised to find such amazing food in Western Mass on a random Saturday afternoon. I ordered the carnitas tacos - three good-sized tacos filled with delicious, flavorful pork, accompanied with rice and beans that were anything but bland. But the highlight of the meal? My boyfriend ordered the chicken molé, and wow...it was spectacular. The sauce had so much flavor! I can't wait to eat my way through the rest of the menu. The only downside was that I couldn't order a taco combo, so I wasn't able to try any of the other taco flavors on a single visit. But really, that's a minor complaint compared to the quality of the food. You're awesome, El Comalito! read more

If I can rate it -1 then I would .When out to eat today and wanted to try a new restaurant, came in to try it out worst mistake ever . It took 30 mins to be even talk to ,then just toss us some stain menu for 4 people when we were 6 people. For the drink to come out it took 25min for the drinks that are already made then another 20 mins for 2 piña colada's .I'm still giving it the benefit of the doubt for the food however 20 more mins happen and we haven't been offers refills or even utensils. They are worrying more on door dash then the own dine in in my opinion if you can't handle both don't do it.DONT COME HERE TO EAT !!!!!! Go here instead of the overrated, and overpriced gringo place across the street. I work within walking distance of El Comalito and frequently get their take out for lunch. They're always the friendliest, most accommodating people. I've tried a variety of their options like the plantains, tacos, burritos. All fantastic and priced great. I've been dying to try the papusas, I just never have the time (they take 20 minutes). They have a daily special at a great price, usually around $5 or $6, and breakfast! read more

I've had carryout four or five time from this place. A group of us go to the Moan and Dove bar next door for beers and we eat Comalito carryout. We bring forks and knives from home. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. Always a winner. To be sure, they have a nice restaurant for eating in, and the place is usually busy, but carryout is always our plan. This place is sort of a hole in the wall, but their food is great especially because its authentic. It is hard to find authentic Mexican or even Salvadorian food miles within the area. I'm a Los Angeles native and I was very excited when I finally found a place that serves Carne Asada. Although, there is a long wait when ordering the pupusas, I can tell how much effort they put into making each and every pupusas and that's why it takes so long. Its recommended that you phone the order in before picking it up. The pupusas are good, but I think it needs a little bit more filling, and probably more variety. Besides the great food, they do have horchata drink and Jarritos soda. The place is small so its not ideal to eat there, but I've been told by one of the staff that they will open a sit down restaurant soon. This little restaurant specializes in what they term "authentic homemade Mexican and Salvadorian food", and the description is very honest. El Comalito is inconspicuously located behind the Moan and Dove Pub and next to a large gas station. However, it is worth hunting down as the food is truly delicious and quite inexpensive. In addition to the range of Mexican offerings, they have homemade Salvadorian pupusas, a thick corn tortilla filled with a mixture of cheese, beans, and, sometimes, a thick paste of ground pork. They also have fried yuca and plaintains My wife had a Chicken Chipotle burrito which was both delicious (I stole some) and enormous. I had the Chicken Enchilada dish with chipotle sauce. Also delicious with very generous portions. (A cautionary word: the food is genuine and when they say chipotle sauce, they mean it. If you like spicy as much as we do, you will be very pleased. If you don't, there are several milder sauces including a Mole and even a ranchero sauce.) The true test of this kind of food resides in the rice. Some restaurants throw in some tomato sauce and a few spices and call it Mexican rice ... nah. The rice at El Comalito testifies to the care and time that the chef invested. It is savory, with a deep flavor that nicely compliments the other elements of the meal. The restaurant is cheery, bright and clean, but seating is very modest and it functions principally as a take-out operation. If all this weren't enough, give them an order that is $10 or greater and they will deliver throughout the Amherst area. Oh yes, and they also cater to groups of 15-40. read more

OK, this place is OK The food is very colorful I give it that but lacks in flavor... And lacks basic salt. Anyways it's OK when you have it in a burrito, with the cheese and sour cream to fill the blandness. However in a bowl without cheeses you can really feel how bland it is. If you are not Hispanic and love Chipotle then you will probably love this place. But to me, even Chipotle has more flavor. That shouldn't be for a local place owned by actual Hispanic people! Anyways it's OK if your too lazy to go out and want free delivery that isn't pizza, wings or calzones and want something healthier. The Empanadas are tasty though, typically fried and anything fried can't taste bad. I love tres leches, I order it, buy it and make it so I know what a good tres leches is. This isn't, I ordered it and it was frozen? I mean the milk was frozen in the cake which makes me believe it is store bought. I let it thaw, it was good, how could tres leches taste bad? You would think at a Mexican/Salvadorian restaurant they would make it or at least make it look like it... Again if you are not Hispanic, you will probably love this place... And if your Peruvian and know Peruvian food...then you'll know what I mean. There isn't much of a dining, it's a typical take out or delivery place. People were nice, but I don't really care about any of that, I just want good food. Everything I had here last night was amazing. They weren't kidding when they said that the whole menu was homemade. I had the best plantains I've every tried, and their fried yuca was better than most of that which I had tried in NM (ironic, huh?). I had the fish tacos, too. Just like the other reviewers claimed, they don't skimp - I usually had to empty a taco out a little bit in order to eat it, then finish the rest with a fork. And the prices are very, very competitive. The whole setup is pretty ingenious - we ordered our food to go, then brought it next door to eat at the Moan & Dove where where we got our drinks. The only things that kept this from being a 5-star review: the service was a little cold, and the horchata came from a 2-gallon milk jug. Now, I didn't try it after seeing that, and they could have made it themselves and just stored it in those... but it seemed to be the one thing that broke the mold of 100% homemade. read more

I enjoyed the ambiance of El Comalito, however I can not say that I would return to this restaurant. The intimacy of the restaurant is one of the only benefits that I enjoyed from my visit here. I also enjoyed the chicken nachos so I would recommend getting that if you ever visit this restaurant. My margarita was also very good and I would recommend getting that if I was to visit this restaurant again or for anyone else. However the rest of the restaurant definitely needs some work! The food that I got were the fish tacos and they tasted very off. They actually made me feel very sick afterwards. I also did not enjoy the rice and beans that came with this meal. The rice lacked flavor and the refried beans were very watered down and not the correct consistency at all. The service at this restaurant was also disappointing. The waitress made us feel like we were a bother to her with every request and question. I think that it would be in their best interest to try and increase their costumer service training because it definitely was not comfortable to be served at this restaurant. I think that a lot of people's reviews that I have seen note that it is a great place for quick and easy burritos, which is not something that we were looking for. I drove by this place forever and always went across the street to Mission Cantina. While I like everything about Mission except the wait, I've been coming here a lot lately. It's even easier for takeout. The food has been really, really good. Great chorizo burritos and enchiladas. Food is priced well, they're nice, and they're easy to get in and out of.
