If you're the type who loves to discover ethnic, storefront restaurants serving great food, you will LOVE this place. If you prefer someplace fancy with more formal service, skip it. (That will make it easier for me.) This is one of the many Latin restaurants in Holyoke who serve lots of yummy options out of a steam table (like stewed chicken, rice, beans, maybe even some oxtail). They do that here too, and it's quite good. BUT what makes this place so special are the formal menu items. Like fried whole snapper or shrimp mofungo...they were incredible! In fact, it may be the most flavorful shrimp dish I've had since moving to Western MA 3 years ago. There's one more reason to go: Carlos the chef/owner. He's incredibly frriendly and charming and loves talking about food. They were wrapping up for the day when we were there (they close at 7 and we showed up around 6:30) and he made us feel so welcome. Heard from a friend that this place was open. Since it's in my neighborhood, I decided to try it for lunch. Okay, I picked up lunch and enough for dinner, too. I chose the pernil (pork) with yellow rice, fried plantains, a couple chicken and pork empañadas, and couple potato balls. (Yea... I'm HUNGRY and greedy). Took my order to go and am sitting in the hairdresser's stuffing my face. It's good. The empañadas are nice and crisp with tasty meat filling. The potato balls are quite big. A wonderful new addition to Holyoke's burgeoning restaurant scene. Only open 2 months and this was my first visit. The food was savory and delicious. I had roast pork, which was juicy even as it fell off the bone, beans and rice, beef stew which I poured over the beans and rice and amazing sweet plantains (that I ate first). The setting is cafeteria style, simple and spotless. The owner came out to chat with us. He is deservedly excited about his project. Everyone, including fellow patrons, was friendly and pleasant.
