Well. Once we were able to find it (hidden in side of building), we were seated immediately. The restaurant was small and a little hectic? We didn't actually get service until they asked us if we were ready to order. Even then, we had to ask if we could get drinks while we decided. The male server seemed bothered having to wait for our decision and even sent the other waitress to take our order. Throughout the entire experience, it seemed like a chore to tend to us. As for the food, it looks MUCH better than it tastes. Don't let the beauty of the sopes cover its lack of seasoning. The tomatillo salsa on the enchiladas was incredibly lime-y, the chicken dry, and the rice felt straight from the box. As we were finishing up, we could see and feel the eyes of the servers "patiently" waiting to give us the bill. Oh, FYI, there is a charge if you use credit card charge. I LOVE El Comalito!! They have a huge menu, so there is definitely something for everyone. They even have chicken fingers and fries for people who might not like El Salvadoran food. It's so cute and colorful inside, with plenty of seating and a full bar. I always get pupusas when I come because they make them fresh, and I love the spicy pickled cabbage it comes with. The pupusas take about 20 minutes to make, but even then everything came out pretty quickly. The margaritas are so good and come in so many flavors! I got the passion fruit this time but I've also had the pineapple and hibiscus in the past. They recently added sopes to their menu so I had to try them. I got the veggie version which was absolutely loaded up! Mushrooms, peppers, onions, broccoli, lettuce, cheese. My only tiny complaint is that I wish the broccoli was cut into smaller pieces so it is easier to get a bite with a little of everything. You can get a LOT of food for a good price! The chicken tacos were probably my favorite and were really filling, especially for being just $9.49. As a heads up, they do provide free chips and salsa but only after you order (we didn't know and ordered a huge appetizer that we had to bring home afterwards). The location is the only drawback. We went for dinner and it felt disconcerting to drive through large fields of grass to arrive at a run down looking gas station. The restaurant building itself is adorable and warm looking but the path to getting there did have me doubting myself a little. Regardless, you should still make the trip as the food and service more than makes up for the slightly scary location (at least at night). read more

This is the first Mexican restaurant that did NOT have chimichangas on the menu. It does cater to the college set, extensive burrito choices. I ordered the fajitas dish. They were quick and hot. Good quantity, took a box home. I wasn't crazy for their refried beans, they were soupy. Didn't care for the salsa that came with the chips either. Their rice was great, along with the fajitas! Holy mole is this place good (and gluten-free friendly!) There is so much flavor in this food, it's absolutely delicious. I was recommended to try the Birria Tacos (aka french dip tacos) and it was a close your eyes and cry a small tear sort of experience. They were so insanely good. My husband tried some and had the same reaction. I don't recall what he got because I was so focused on my own magic, but he loved his dinner too. We will absolutely be back again and SOON! Oh and for my GF friends, they have a well-marked menu, and a lot of the menu is made with corn tortillas, so there's plenty to eat, including the Birria! I'm a fan of El Comalito. The variety of food is probably the best thing about El Comalito. I really like the plantains, the Yuca con Chicharrones, and their Mexican dishes. The platters can look basic (rice and beans) but are definitely tasty. They used to be a good deal price wise, but I'm not so sure anymore. The seating area is nicely decorated, though a bit small/cramped. The staff are not particularly friendly, or patient. I typically do take out, and I don't think I've ever been greeted warmly. They've had phone issues for months, where it makes it hard to understand what they are saying. I've had staff snap at me when I ask them to repeat themselves. read more

It took years for this little divey, off the beaten path joint to secure their liquor license and now...damn! The carne asada burrito with guacamole is a go to item. Found this cute little place through Yelp and went twice on the same week. It's simple, no frills Mexican and Salvadorian dishes. You order as you come in and then a waitress brings your dish to the table. Service is very friendly. I tried the papusas and they were on point. On my second day I had the green enchiladas which were also very tasty. It's not a fancy place but often the best places aren't. It is very cozy and inviting. Several tables. Ample parking. Clean bathroom. Update: visited again 4/28. Food was still very good but I felt the staff lacked attention to tables that needed to be cleaned. Instead....he sits texting. The food was good but i was not drinking and i got the impression that i was unwelcome because of my race as the server and host were very cold to me. Two parties seated after me got served and talked to and the server and host were so friendly to them. My food and ginger ale was thrown down on the table without conversation and the bill was taken with the tip i left with not even a thank you or a smile. I was very pleasant and said thank you and goodnight but i felt hurt like i had done something wrong and i was feeling lonely so that was the main reason i went out. No Stars. This restaurant is the worst & will try to charge you the gratuity which is illegal!!! Upon entering the surly bartender/waiter was on the phone & completely ignored us. After standing around for 5 minutes the only waitress on staff sat us in the dim lit dining room. Another table came in shortly after us & somehow got there food first. Our waitress who had clearly never waited tables before took our drink order & then disappeared for 20 minutes before coming back to take our order. We ordered nachos that arrived with no plates so our table became messy. I'm not sure what chips were used but they were thick & tasteless. Another 20 minutes rolls by before she even comes back for our entree. We had a show that evening & were starting to worry about making it on time. The venue was only a 60 second walk from the restaurant but we were still concerned about time because the service was so slow. No 3 minutes or 3 bites. My husband ordered a beer & only 1 beer because she never came back to see if we needed drinks or even plates. Finally ordered some basic tacos & had the perfect view to watch the cook working in the kitchen. I was excited to try the Fluffy Taco as I'd never had one & instead I got a basic ground beef white People Taco. All of the shells were gross & unfired so we were eating basic gross uncooked Taco shells that were so underwhelming & tasteless. As the time grew closer to our show we needed to find the surly teenager behind the bar who just seemed pissed to be at work & as we were paying they charged us the gratuity automatically which is 100% illegal & then they tried to blame it on my husband & say that he was drunk & belligerent. I started with chips and salsa which honestly were the weakest part of the meal. Chips needed to cook a bit longer, and the salsa was bland except for the cilantro. I like cilantro but it could have used heat and a bit more salt. On to the margarita - I got the 'classic' and it was. Fresh squeezed lime. (Pulp!) Smooth and satisfying. Not being familiar with Salvadoran food I stuck with what I know, and ordered enchiladas. Three of them, a hearty plateful with rice and refried beans. All delicious. You get a choice of sauces and I opted for the chipotle. It was plenty hot, just the right heat level and very tasty. (I've had too many bland sauces. This was kickin'.) Service is good but unhurried, and as mentioned, very friendly. Prices seemed reasonable. All in all, except for the complimentary chips and salsa, a darn good meal. I'll be back. read more

My friend recommended this place to me because it was one of the best Mexican places she's had in the Amherst area and after my visit, I can agree! Everything on the menu was calling my name but I ended up going with the steak tacos complimented with rice and beans. My boyfriend got a steak quesadilla and that came with rice and beans. It was pretty flavorful! And the steak tacos I've had before are usually a hit or miss for flavor. For an appetizer, we got salsa and guacamole with chips. The chips were fresh and so was the guacamole. The guacamole was BOMB. I loved it. The salsa was not my favorite. We got hot at first and it wasn't good so we asked for medium. Medium was better but I wouldn't get it again. I would've preferred two sides of guacamole, tbh. Their sour cream was pretty bomb too. It had veggies in it. I'm a fan. The food was pretty good, pretty inexpensive, and the place was pretty clean. For all the food listed above plus two Jarritos, it was about $33-34. Pretty good. Oh yeah! First time coming here, and DEFINITELY my last. If I could give this 0 stars I would, but unfortunately it's impossible. This place was AWFUL. The food wasn't good, the staff was rude and swore at us, they spoke in Spanish thinking we didn't understand (we did) calling us disrespectful names. They messed up almost everything we ordered and were not kind/understanding. The waiter threw the check at us and never checked on us at any point during the experience unless she was called over. Delicious and affordable! We feel fortunate to have this restaurant in our neighborhood.

It wasn't until I tried this restaurant that I realized every time I've craved something but couldn't quite put my finger on what... was that I was missing these foods in my life. The jalapeno and cheese pupusas are a treat, thickness and amount of cheese just right. The fish tacos are so tasty. I can't get enough of the empanadas. And yes their chips and salsa is good (though I'd prefer the salsa a little less runny). Even the shrimp burrito is amazing a day later, cold. I look forward to eating here, because this place has so many options to satisfy my need for savory food at reasonable prices. Staff is really friendly too. The restaurant can get quite busy, so ordering take-out is probably the best option at those times as there aren't a ton of tables.
