El Diablo Torta, quesadilla
Kevin N.

Being from Southern California I was excited to try some Texas Mexican for the first time and I was not disappointed! Very charming place, super friendly servers and amazing food. Very authentic and flavorful. The chips and salsa were the best I've ever had. Torta was well put together and a good balance of flavors. Definitely made with love

Salsa, green avocado salsa, black bean dip and margarita.

First off, walking in the customer service was great. The server was very hospitable and friendly. Margaritas are really good. The food is authentic Mexican food. The chips are definitely made fresh. They serve the chips with green avocado salsa, black bean dip, and fresh salsa. The flautas were soooo good. We also tried the fajita tacos and they were delicious. The atmosphere is great! Really cool pictures all over the walls. We will definitely be back again.

I was rolling down Jefferson with my toddler nephew when I saw the magic word "birria" on some signage outside El Catrin. We immediately detoured into the color explosion that is this cute Mexican restaurant! The woman working was very nice and the food was great. I ordered the birria tacos and my nephew had chicken nuggets. The nuggets were toddler-approved and were a hit, and the birria were probably the best tacos I've had so far in the city. However, there was no consommé/stew to dip it in which was the only negative. I'll be back to work through more of the menu, this place is great!!

Service bar, the place is littered with posters for wrestling, movies, and more. Such a vibrant atmosphere with great music.

From the moment you walked into and the moment you left, this place was such a cozy experience. It's brightly decorated with posters from sports, music, and film. The background music wasn't overbearing. You could actually talk with your company. There were too many choices, so we ended up getting a few different items to try, and it was worth it. The freshness was refreshing, and flavors were complex but subtle. The mole was perfectly balanced, and found it was an aunt who created it. There were two guys who took care of us. Both were very attentive and kind. A heads up, you will have a small wait for the good, but it's worth it. Even though we were very full, we got dessert anyways; a super rich and decant chocolate cake as well to a caramel filled churro. I beg you to come try this place, it's an experience that's unforgettable!

Like i told the guy working. Rare i visit a place twice. Let alone in the same week. I'm quite satisfied with service and food quality. The food was flavorful and hot and the salsas... YES PLEASE! Spicy/hot is right where I want to be. Mom had the enchiladas and I had the Birria tacos. The quesadilla was a next day item with breakfast and family was happy. A solid choice. The inside of this establishment is very on theme for culture and decor. I can see myself sitting with friends or whoever and having a beer and some food. Its not totally tex mex like some of these other places. I may have found my spot. A third and fourth time will be needed with other dishes to officially decide.

We were in the neighborhood at the Bishop Arts Theatre Center. Yelp led us here, and I'm so glad it did. Brightly colored, and filled with families, we were welcomed in immediately. We had birria tacos, chicken enchilidas, and carne asada. Very much a iykyk kinda place with large portions and low prices. Highly recommend.

Awful service, so so good and poor ambiance. Entered and no one let us know to sit or wait for a table. Asked for a regular coke and 3 people had to come over and discuss the choices with me. ( I speak fluent Spanish) Then received salsa and chips. We asked for salt. It took 20 minutes to receive it. Ordered birria tacos and rice and beans. They stared at us like what did you want? I asked for no cheese on my bottom tacos and they brought soft tacos with no birria consome. When I asked about the wrong items brought to me: 4 more people came over to figure it out. Finally received the right order. I then went to tue bathroom and the door lock was not working so people walked in on me. Meat was too bland. Salsas we're so so Will not be returning or recommending

Our cocktails were all good - and the appetizers were very good. We had the crispy pork belly and the tostaditas with barbacoa. The crispy pork belly was especially delicious and I would order as my own dinner in the future. It comes with onions and sauces and corn tortillas and it's to die for - so crispy and flavorful. We ordered the Bistec enchiladas and they were good but not as good as the appetizers. They give you a variety of sauces when you're seated that you keep throughout the meal - from mild to spicy but I would say the "spicy" is on the mild side. Still good and flavorful but not unapproachable for most ppl. We had the Campechana dessert and it was a little strange. It was basically a vanilla Icecream cake with a crispy waffle cone like layering that was really hard to break until it sat a while. It was oddly addicting but also not that good? I can't explain it. We went to the cigar lounge area after dinner and had Mexican espresso martinis and watched football before heading home. There was little smoke smell but very minimal until it got later. Around 8:30 (on a Saturday night) ppl started smoking cigars and they opened the side windows and being 90degrees right now - it became less enjoyable so we decided to end the night. In the fall that room would probably be quite lovely with the windows open. They have comfortable seating and fire pits. Really more of a 4.5 out of 5. Loved the decor near the restrooms and patio too.

There was a time when Meso Maya was the go-to for upscale Mexican in Dallas. The culinary scene in Dallas has changed so much that it is not longer the case. But the downtown Meso Maya remains an icon and continues to deliver consistently good food and service. The restaurant still has the warm ambience and remains in good condition even after all these years. It was too hot to sit on the patio so we ate indoors. The interior is smaller than I remember. The restaurant still starts you out with complimentary chips which are strips, and a smoky, spicy salsa. it was great. I started with the a mescal margarita and it was excellent. The kid had Topo Chico and the wife had Prosecco. Everyone enjoyed their drink. For entrees, the wife had her favorite, the vegetable budin, which is like a lasagna. The flavors were deep and rich. She loved it. I tried the carne tacos and they were excellent! The meat was tender and smoky. The beef had been marinated for a wonderful flavor. Good quality with no fat. I usually avoid ordering beef at restaurants because I often get more fat than meat which I detest, but not at Meso Maya. Our server Luis was very good. Present when we wanted and not when we did not. Overall, the restaurant was a hit on every level--ambience, service, and food. We like the downtown location the best and will return.

The staff were incredibly attentive throughout our entire meal, ensuring we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. As for the food absolutely delicious! To top off an already fantastic dinner, they surprised us with a complimentary dessert and even a free tequila shot to celebrate my dad's birthday! The live music performer on duty was also wonderfully kind, adding such a warm, festive, and memorable touch to his special night. We can't wait to come back. For those interested my original review is below, it wasn't even scandalous. I will not bother responding to the owner anymore so don't event bother responding sir. Original review: I really wanted to love this place, and I was so close to doing so. The good: the ambiance was cute and fun. Loved the decorations, the bar is big and takes up a lot of the area where some of the tables are making it a little crowded but that's not a big deal. They had a performer there that night and that was cool. The item we were so excited to try was the biggest disappointment, the chicharon! It looked so good but it was so bland and chewy. We thought it might have been undercooked and ordered another second and asked them to cook it longer but alas it was like chewing on nothing. And that is the common denominator with all the food here. It was so bland. The only item I enjoyed was the jalapeño and cheese sausage. The salsa was bland. The meats were bland. The chicken was overcooked and dry. The drink in the bowl was good. But other than that the meal was a disappointment which is truly sad because we were looking forward to the meal, and it was pricey too. Had the food been good we wouldn't have been bothered by the price. We needed some flavor that day.

My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - I love the atmosphere at Mexican Sugar. The restaurant itself reminds me of Mexico inside and out, and the different types of seating (communal, patio, traditional, cool) will give you plenty of options. But in the evening, when Happy Hour begins Mexican Sugar will fill up with tons of patrons and good energy. 1 Star. Service - The service has always been good on my multiple visits. Food - There's brunch on the weekends and traditional Mexican dishes (tacos, enchiladas). On my visit on a holiday, I went with brunch and the Barbacoa Chilaquiles. This is a traditional Mexican breakfast where tender barbacoa is layered on tortilla chips along with a sunny side up egg. The result is a fantastic combination of flavors, texture, and heat.
