Went here for lunch with my wife and our friends while visiting Syracuse. Totally cool place. Very old but clean and comfortable. The wait staff were great. They were attentive and had good recommendations. The menu is LARGE. They offer the traditional Mexican cuisine along with some specials. I had the shrimp Diabla and asked for it HOT. Boy was it hot but so flavorful, I didn't care. My wife had enchiladas which were bursting with flavor. Value for the money was great. I will start this as I always do by saying I do not give out five stars unless I am really blown away. I was passing through and found this little place. Great spot for lunch. Price was good. Food was excellent. The ambience was nice. I like the brick walls and adding in the Mexican vibe to it. They serve chips and salsa before the meal and they were delicious. I could've just taken another bowl of chips and salsa and that could've been my lunch but I ordered number six. Got a burrito and chicken taco with some rice. All in all a solid Mexican restaurant. The service was fast and friendly. I enjoyed the ambiance and the seat carvings. The price points are reasonable, and the beer was COLD. Not only was the front end fast and friendly, but the back end was quick as well. Minimal wait from time of order to point of service for our meals. Both my son and I really enjoyed our lunches with no complaints. Nothing over the top, but a SOLID meal none the less. Everything was pretty much spot on. My family visits Mexico every year and I found my lunch here Fresh.... Flavorful.... Authentic... My only complaint is that I live in Marcellus and we stumbled across this restaurant while passing through to get somewhere else. It's a little too far for me to visit on a regular basis. The food here is really good. We are from out of town and came in for the Women's Rights National Park. Que comida más rica. We liked the decor, día de los muertos theme. Hands down my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in Upstate NY! I stumbled on El Bajio on my way home from being out west and I'm so glad I did! The booths have gorgeous carved and painted with Dia de Los Muertos scenes, the service was wonderful and fast! The food was absolutely incredible! I highly recommend chile relleno and tamales for starters. I can't not get a chimichanga when it's offered, and they're absolutely worth trying! They have a few beers to choose from and an extensive margarita list as well! I highly recommend checking out El Bajio if you haven't yet, it's definitely worth the drive to Seneca Falls if you're not in the immediate area! read more

I really want to love this place, I live close by. Great and very friendly service, really fun, family friendly ambiance. I've been by twice - the first time it was generally bad, the second time it was totally gross. Visit one was fajitas - nothing tasted fresh, everything seasoned to death. Visit two I had diabolo shrimp - the sauce tasted like hot cocktail sauce (so not fresh, tasted like a bottle of something) and the shrimp were raw on the inside. My girlfriend and I got dinner here on November 25th. We were a little early for the dinner hour, so the restaurant wasn't busy. She ordered the Mixtas Fajitas and I got the Mole do Pollo. Her food was perfectly cooked with a great combination of protein and vegetables. Mine was similarly delicious with a wonderful mole sauce over the chicken. A side of vegetables and rice offered a nice contrast. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere was lovely. A great dinner. read more

Seneca Falls is probably best known for its association to the women's suffrage movement. It's an old city dating back to the mid-1700s. So it's always nice to see someone take over an old empty storefront in a city to help keep the main business district alive. While El Bajio may not date back to the mid 1950s when the building was constructed, the interior easily does help you to reflect back to that era. There is a small more brightly lit seating area, at the 72 Fall St. address, that is in front of what was likely the pizza order/pickup counter left over from the prior business. A long narrow dining area, at the 74 Fall St. address, with a bar, tables and booths extends to the back of the property with access to a rear parking lot. We chose to sit in a booth by the front window in order to take advantage of the natural light streaming in. Thursday evening does not appear to be a time of high demand for dinner so the one server was able to efficiently handle the four of five parties that passed through, and the couple of takeout orders, during the slightly more than one hour we were there. Salsa and chips were served while we perused the beverage list. With some Mexican beers on tap, I decided to have a pint of Modelo Especial ($4.75) while my wife ordered a Hornito Margarita ($8.75). Both were excellent, but the margarita would have benefited from more salt on the rim. The salsa was very tasty, though not spicy, and had enough thickness that it easily adhered to the chips whether you dunked or scooped the salsa. From the appetizer list the Jalapeños Rellenos ($7) sounded too good to pass up - fresh jalapeños stuffed with steak and cheese, then wrapped in bacon and deep fried. These were among the spiciest jalapeños we'd come across in some time. Once their fry temperature had decreased enough to safely bite into them we found the blend of flavors to be quite pleasing. Nice meaty bacon on all four of them. The bit of sour cream over the shredded lettuce and pickled onions in the center of the plate assisted in addressing the spiciness of the peppers. An item on the menu that caught us off guard were Molcajetes. Aware that a molcajete is our equivalent to the mortar and pestle, we were simply surprised to see it also being used as the serving dish for several hot entrees on the menu. Previously, we only had tableside prepared guacamole served in a molcajete. My wife ordered the Original Molcajete ($15.75) - grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, onions, tomato, and bell pepper all topped with chorizo and cheese. It certainly is a sight to see it delivered to the table in the exceedingly hot, pig shaped stone bowl. Everything was perfectly cooked, even the shrimp. There was lots of flavor in the molcajete mixture and the side of refried beans, rice, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and four flour tortillas made for a very filling meal. I had to try my standard for evaluating any Mexican restaurant - any dish with mole. The only one offered was Mole Enchiladas ($10.75). Three chicken enchiladas topped with house-made mole sauce came with rice, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. The chicken was breast meat that was not overcooked. The sides were pretty standard. The mole sauce however lacked the deep rich flavor that I expect in such a sauce. It was only OK. What I thought was the strangest part of the dish was the tortillas wrapped around the chicken. The consistency of the tortillas was more like a thin pancake. Apparently, they only use flour tortillas. None of the dishes served or listed on the menu indicated masa or corn tortillas. Only the chips with the salsa were corn. There was still one more item on the menu that called out to me - Sopapilla ($3.25). It was 1968 that I first was introduced to sopapillas in Albuquerque. I've long searched for what I remember. This, however, was not going to be the end of my search. It appears that El Bajio deep fries their tortillas, sprinkles them with sugar and cinnamon, and pours some honey on top. Certainly a sweet ending to the meal, but not anything similar to the puffy pillows of delight that I recall. The search goes on! read more

Completely forgot to add my review from a visit just over a year ago. Went on a day-time road trip with a friend and while in Seneca Falls we decided to grab a bite to eat and both agreed that El Bajio looked very appealing while we walked through the village. The place looks great on the inside and the staff were really friendly. The food was very much the typical, highly Americanized version of Mexican food you find at the majority of Mexican restaurants across the country. Theirs was definitely fresh, but not really any better flavor-wise than their counterparts. I had the regular enchiladas and 3 taco's. I rarely eat Americanized Mexican anymore since it's a bit easier to find the real thing these days, but if I were in Seneca Falls again and wanted something Mexican-ish, I'd be happy swinging in again. read more
