But to say that equates to authentic is like argueing the Chinese food at the mall is authentic because the server spoke broken English. This is a classic American Mexican formula restaurant, complete with the combo menu of taco, burrito, and chimichanga- all slopped with red sauce and cheese. But just the same, I don't care about authenticity if the food is good. I wouldn't say it was good though. It was fair and unremarkable, and the prices are decent - my dinner + soda was $10. This is good Mexican and reasonably authentic. The menu is an upgrade over most Gringo-Mex but it is not completely de-TexMex-ed. The clientele is mostly white but people seemed to know what the were ordering. The Margarita's are a mix but they worked for me. I've already reviewed La Tolteca for both the Concord Pike and Rehoboth locations, so I'll try to make this shorter! I like that this site is right off the highway, and close to several hotels and other stores. I only ordered takeout from this location, and it did take an extra few minutes to order due to a newer cashier I believe. I was asked if I wanted it spicy. Of course I did. Food arrived in maybe six minutes, at 8pm on a Saturday. Nice. And holy chipotles, guys, the food was really spicy. I got the camarones diablo, spicy shrimp, and thank goodness it came with a "guac salad" which was shredded lettuce, premade guacamole and a thick slide of tomato to cool everything down because otherwise it would have been tricky business. I liked that they gave me, as a takeout customer, a large order of complimentary chips and salsa. This Tolteca is probably my least favorite, but not by a large margin. Other locations just seem nicer, a little cleaner, and larger as well. I was surprised that they advertised delivery; something I haven't seen on any other location yet. They sat us in a dark, dingy booth where the furniture was so big that the waiter had to struggle his way around it to bring us our food. The dishes were heavily seasoned with MSG laden adobo and cooked to death. The service was fast but not at all friendly or welcoming. Great food and very affordable. We went for a lunch meeting on Wednesday and were impressed. Fajitas came out sizzling and tasted great. Homemade chips and queso served while you check out the menu. Not loud at lunch rush so we were able to enjoy our food and still get some work in. Pricing for three adults for lunch was under $40.00, I thingk that is great for a sit down meal. Resturant was very clean and not over the top in decor like some other places we have visited. Location is good right in front of Dover Downs so easy on and off of 13 and 1 to access. Love their enchiladas!! This is a very good Mexican restaurant and is reasonably authentic. The menu is better than most Am-Mex restaurants. The salsa is better than most places as well, and has a nice zing and good flavor. Comments and Observations: The entire staff is Mexican, which is a good thing. Their enchiladas are my favorite in the whole area (PA, NJ, DE, MD). The chili rellenos are different (someone else said this too)...they contain mashed potato in the stuffing...I enjoyed this. So if you're going to a Mexican restaurant in Cinco De Mayo, you know it's glint to be crazy busy. Especially when you have a group of 10. However the staff kept us happy, drinks filled and smiles on their faces as we waited for a table to clear. Every single person working that night were working their tails off and all the while had the most pleasant demeanor. When we did get our tables, service was fantastic despite the 1000 people there. Drinks were always full and the food was fantastic. All 10 of us were thrilled with our meals. I had the rib eye fajitas that came out sizzling and were so flavorful. These raving reviews have to be bogus. Let me start off by saying the waiter was completely inattentive. Coming to the table to drop off a pitcher once and that was it. He was curt and ignorant. It was out of the way to even ask for more napkins. This is the furthest from authentic Mexican foods as it comes. The queso was canned American cheese...or at last cut 50/50 with it. I live in Philadelphia...we use canned American cheese sauce on our cheese steaks...I know what I was eating! The guacamole was bland and clearly packaged and the "salsa" that came with the stale, burnt oil chips tasted like cold crushed tomatoes. The shrimp quesadilla that I paid $10.75 for was completely over priced and disgusting. It tasted like a fish tank and there was American cheese in the quesadilla. Greasy, dirty Shrimp and American cheese...not so pleasant! I drove several hours to see my sister who happened to be a feasible distance from me on a work trip. We were ready to sit, relax and spend some money. We were so dissatisfied we didn't dare stay for dessert! Try another restaurant...seriously, taco bell has more seasoning in their dishes! Definitely a highlight of the night. Most of us ordered fajitas which were a little bit over salted and over cooked. Rest of the group's entrees were fine. This was such a great find after a client meeting! They have a lunch express menu from which I got a fajita express and my coworker got enchiladas for about $8 per dish. It was a good amount of food and so so tasty! Service was great and quick. The place has a great atmosphere and the chips were warm which we loved and the salsa a bit spicy which we loved also. I love Mexican and this is a great place to get it. It is always fast no matter how many people are there and always hot and fresh. I've gotten the taco salad, fajitas, burrito, quesadilla s, chalupa, and tacos. Ive also hag the chicken nuggets since my kids don't really like Mexican. Won't say the nuggets were worth it, and the chalupa is nothing like the one at taco bell. Maybe taco bell took the chalupa and made it their own? Its just a scoop of beef on top of a small tostado. Late Sunday night, my girlfriend and I enjoyed a post-beach dinner at La Tolteca. Her grilled fish was good, and so was my shrimp, onions, peppers, mushrooms served on a hot iron plate. One of the better Mexican restaurants I have been to. The staff is really friendly, and are great with kids! The food tastes wonderful, and the prices for the amounts u get is a good deal. Customer services was poor. Our waiter was really friendly to other guest it appeared they might have be regulars. The waiter did not bring our food until 5 minutes about guest that came 30 minutes after us, the restaurant wasn't even crowded. I asked for water which I did not receive until 20 minutes later after I got up to give management a compliant​.i was told the owner and no management came to work today (2/25/17).I hope it wasn't because we were the only African American there. I love authentic Mexican food. I also love Tex-Mex food. This is the later. Sometimes you want an overstuffed burrito smothered with cheese, you know? In Dover, there are two Mexican restaurants with similar names that are about 2 miles apart on the same road -- La Tolteca and La Tonalteca. But what a difference those 2 miles and the letters "na" make. La Tolteca you should bring your friends to for a fun feast. La Tonalteca you should avoid. (I'm pretty sure a couple of these bad reviews are for La Tonalteca. It's the way gaudier place. Way.) I will say that the food can be a bit uneven here. We've gone several times and once the food had significantly less seasoning. It's like the chef that day decided to put us all on a low-sodium diet. The burritos and chimichangas are delicious. My husband likes the fajitas among other things. The meat is nicely seasoned the the onions and peppers are seared just how he likes them. I also love the salsa. They'll sell you some extra to take home. Which I want to do but keep forgetting. I'm so full at the end of the meal that I finally stop craving extra salsa. Lots of good food for a reasonable price and the wait staff is nice and friendly. read more

I am from Texas and this was actually the closest thing to Tex-Mex I've had in a northern state. The burritos and enchiladas had a sauce on them that tasted like a combination of enchilada sauce and marinara sauce. The salsa was very good; however could have stood to be a little more spicy. My wife said her tamale was really good and the other member of our party really liked his enchiladas rancheros. Unfortunately we did not try a margarita, but they at least looked good. Probably a quarter of a chicken breast and three shrimp in there. three tiny pieces of pineapple. I had the distinct impression that the pineapple shell on my plate had been used for many other dinners prior to the one that I got. There were a few onions and a few peppers. The beef quesadilla from the à la cart menu was just OK. The taco from the children's menu was good. Flour tortillas were tasteless. I love this Mexican restaurant. Definitely wowed me. What a great day to experience a great restaurant. I specially was impressed by the price and the huge portion of food. First time I ordered Taco Salad and I was not disappointed because it came out wonderful and delicious. I finished the whole taco salad. With extra cost of guacamole, it was creamy and tasty. The shell was delicious and the chips as starter that are all homemade were filling. I say sign me up and totally forget about Taco Bell which is next to it.
