Saturday PM around 345. Place was dead. 4 other tables when we arrived. Waited for a host to come and seat us, she was more interested in chatting with another co-worker rolling silverware. Same "host" was our server. She started by trying to sell us on the buffet with was closing in 15 minutes. When we declined she took a another 15 min to come back to take our order. We weren't offered any chips and salsa (note for later) 30+ minutes later our food arrived. Both orders were missing items. While we were waiting for our rice and sauce for chicken, we noticed tables that came in after us getting chips and salsa when seated. When we asked our server, she said that we didn't get any because they were "making more chips" when we originally sat. Did she offer any when ready? Nope. Server never came back to check on our food or refill drinks. Had to track her down at the bar, again hanging out with co-workers, to pay our check. I'd give it a zero if I could. I have always loved this restaurant. I was taken aback when we arrived and there were not many people there on a Friday evening. However it benefited us because we received superb and attentive service. The food was prompt, hot and delicious. Our drinks were perfect and plentiful. They have the best decor that is fitting for a Mexican restaurant. Our family will continue to frequent this restaurant because the service is Always Excellent, the food and drinks are always on point. We sat in a booth in buffet area. Booth is very small and awkward for average size people. Our feet were crossing over each other. The interior ambiance did seem cheerful and welcoming. The table and floor was a bit sticky though. We suspected it may have been the cleaning solution used. We ordered the buffet with snow crab legs (2 clusters per person) which was worth it. The other foods I tried were tasty - the flauta was full of meat, the beef for tacos was flavorful, there was a stew like mixture with beef that was very tender and moist, the toppings for tacos looked fresh and lettuce was crunchy and not wilted, and included guacamole which was tasty. I wish the foods were labeled as I tried some other items but don't know the names. The cheese quesadillas looked a little greasy. I was partial to the fried tortillas with cinnamon sugar - they were good. The chips and salsa served at the table were not good and I've had much better at almost every other Mexican restaurant. We've enjoyed the Rehoboth Beach place many times, today was our first visit to the Dover restaurant, and we enjoyed everything. The warm crispy chips and fresh salsa were tasty as expected. My carnitas fajitas were fantastic...succulent and crispy pork, perfectly grilled veggies, and a huge portion. Hubby ordered the enchiladas mole poblano...delicious and happy to see all white meat chicken. I always appreciate it when hot food comes to the table HOT. We shared both entrees and didn't leave a bite. Looking forward to our next visit and we hope to see David again, he took great care of us. read more

I've called for takeout orders for me and others twice this week and both times I had to call back at least once because I was hung up on initially and both times the orders were royally screwed up. Someone in our group order a margarita pitcher. Dont remember the kind but it was a good drink. I ordered the fish tacos and they didn't really come with much on them. This place is a hit or miss. The first time I went to this restaurant I was not impressed with the food at all. I got the shrimp dish and it was greasy and just gross. Then my friend sitting across from me said she saw a cockroach behind me. This experience happened about 3 years ago. Recently some co-workers wanted to come here for happy hour/dinner and of course I was reluctant. I decided to join them and this time I got the burrito azteca with double rice and a coronarita to go with it. Idk if it was a the coronarita but the burrito was really good. I called them and said I'm here for my order, they took 2 mins too get back too me and said about 10mins (I'm pretty sure they hadn't even started until I called because it was 3pm and only a few cars parked. We ordered: The Sopa Mayo 5.29 Beef Quesadilla 10.99 Flan 3.99 Fried ice cream 4.99 Iced tea 2.49 Lemonade 2.49 Sprite 2.49 Side of Spanish Rice 2.49 Everything was mediocre at best, except the quesadilla which was awful. I was expecting it to be filled with, you know, ingredients, but it was literally just beef and cheese. I was told it would have a "side salad" but it just had shredded lettuce and two huge slices of tomato. I also asked for NO GUAC and they obviously accidentally put guac on the plate anyway, and then took it off, because there was residual guacamole all over my sour cream. But even with the mediocre food it would have been at least a 3 star review because the place is cute and the server was nice. The service was SO slow. In town for jury duty and decided to have a veggie quesadilla for lunch. It my go to meal. I love the chips since they are served warm and thin. The salsa is homemade and little on the watery side with chunks of tomatoes. I ordered off menu since they don't offer a veggie quesadilla on the menu. It was good but too many onions and not enough mushrooms. The waiter checked with the kitchen to see if they could make it. Then he advised it would be $9.00. Which is acceptable. I just placed a to-go order at 2:07 pm, 6/8/21, (two taco bowls and two sides of salsa) with a young (maybe 30s) man, and from the moment I stepped in, he was unprofessional and rude. I have been a long-time customer and have never been treated so poorly. He never properly greeted me, never said thank you, and when he brought my food to me, never said a word. I would think that during COVID times, customers would be appreciated. If I see him again, I will walk out and take my business down the street where I am treated with kindness and proper customer service. He was not wearing a badge so I did not get his name. Great food and good service! Had never been here before and now twice in one week. Both times I had the chicken burrito and enchilada and refried beans. Today we also had the buffet, plenty of variety, hot and quality food. Carlos the manager checked on us several times and ensured we had a great experience. My wife and I tried this place without checking in with Yelp because it was time for us to have dinner and we were faraway from home. The first thing we noticed was the high quality of the decor. It seemed very authentic. There was ample space inside for social distance and we were seated right away. We got waited on promptly. Waitress brought a nice serving of chips with some very tasty salsa. My wife ordered a Veggie Combo, which a bean burrito, a cheese enchilada, and a tostada. I ordered the Campesina Salad with chicken. The order arrived quickly. Portion size was large and both were delicious. My salad had large chunks of fresh green pepper and onion as well as lettuce and tomato topped with their special dressing, and the broiled chicken slices were fabulous. La Tonalteca is a small chain in DE. This is the newest location, opened a year ago. I went here for the first time on Monday evening. The first thing that struck me was the decor. The walls are muted, rustic looking, with some wrought iron and terracotta accents. Okay. But the seating is all seemingly hand carved/painted in very bright, not at all matching colors and designs. We're talking every table, every chair, every booth is a different design and color. Gave me a headache. The food came out absurdly, suspiciously quickly- no way it was fresh. The "secret spices" the menu promised on my carnitas must have been butter, as the chunked pork was incredibly fatty and bland. The refried beans had a skin. So, I filled up on saffron rice, tortillas, and margaritas. My date's chimichanga was actually rather good, though I've never had a chimichanga before so I can't compare it to much. The dessert, fried cheesecake with banannas which goes by some name I can't say, was yummy. I am hoping that I just ordered a bad dish. I'm willing to give the place a second chance. read more

We went on a Friday night. The food was pretty good and the waitress seemed nice. I paid the check on my card and left the tip in cash. On Monday when the bill posted to my account there was an extra $10 added that I did not authorize. I called to inquire about it and they said the manager wouldn't be in until Friday. I called Friday and they said the manager was busy. I address my concerns and gave my information. I was told they would call back, they never did. I went to the restaurant Saturday. I explained the situation to the front desk and was given more excuses... such as they don't keep the receipts at the restaurant. As soon as I said I would contact the local police and report credit card fraud they offered to pay back my $10. I don't think anything happened to the waitress. So with no real plans, I made my way up and accidentally came across La Tonalteca....in other words, I missed my turn, ended up in their parking lot, thought it looked cute and decided to check it out. I did not read any reviews before going in, and I'm kind of glad I didn't. If I had read the reviews I may have decided to go somewhere else, but as it turned out I was very happy with the food, service, and prices. The place was very clean, and had a beautiful decor (especially the bathrooms!) My ONLY reason for not giving them 5 stars is because nobody came to see if I wanted another drink, and it took a while for me to get the check when I was ready to leave.
