I'm not sure what to make of all these goos reviews. Perhaps they've never had Mexican food? Chile rellenos are supposed to have a breaded coating... The filling shouldn't have meat or provel cheese. We came here for dinner. We were greeted with 'you can't bring your dog in here', referring to my wife's Seeing Eye dog. After several back and forth yes/no, I presented her id for her dog. They still did not understand and milled around in the back of the restaurant talking to each other in Spanish. I requested to talk to the manager, which apparently was not around. After reciting Title III of the Federal law, they decided to seat us. During the entire meal, the waiters would look at her dog as if she was evil or something. With that said, the "food and service was excellent". If not for the incident with our service animal, I would have given them 5 stars. read more

Even though most of the food here isn't 100% like Mexico, the tacos are EXTREMELY close. Then once you get past that, the more Americanized Mex food like grilled chicken quesadillas are amazing, nachos, burritos and shrimp chimichanga are all incredible. This place is crazy good and crazy busy but it's worth the wait. Fast service great food. They need more room that's the only down side.

First of all, I had Googled "The best tacos in St Louis", and this place popped up. Since we live near by, my wife and I made it a destination lunch experience. The Good: The place was clean, had an inviting, smoke free bar and the staff was friendly and efficient. Very pleasant ambiance. The Bad: The food. It started with the chips and salsa. The chips were flavorless and with the consistency of thin pork rinds, not at all like classic corn tortillas. The salsa was thin, watery and bland. No flavor and not a trace of a vegetable other than it was red like a tomato. I came for the tacos. I ordered the combo with one beef and one chicken taco and beans and rice. My plate came and the food was gray. No garnish, no visible vegetable and with the house pork-rind tortillas. The beans were gray and runny, and my first reaction was that they looked like plastic joker vomit. The pork-rind tortilla tacos were covered with flavorless, coarsely shredded white cheese with no meat, lettuce or tomatoes visible. Pico de gallo did not seem to be an option. The ground beef was gray. No char, no flavor, no texture. The chicken was boiled soup-chicken chunks, and again, no flavor, no char, no texture. As a bonus, the tacos had been scrunched into the runny, plastic vomit beans and were mushy and had disintegrated, making them impossible to pick up and eat with your fingers. My wife ordered the taco salad. Again, the presentation was gray. No garnish, no pico de gallo, no guacamole and a mushy, pork-rind taco shell. The same bland, flavorless ground beef. I am offended when an attractive, seemingly well run restaurant is the purveyor of slop. My wife and I left with the feeling of an overdose of White Castle....Queasy. It looked like a great place to enjoy monster margaritas, but if you want decent Mexican food, this is not the place. read more

Hot food, flavorful food. However avoid the taco salad as the cheese dip they put in, ends up making a soup. It usually takes 10 plus mins to get your bill. The staff is not friendly at all. They do refill drinks more often than most Mexican restaurants it seems. Prices are a bit higher than average. The bad experience.... We sat a total of 4 if us. So we get 4 menu's and 4 silverware, then a co worker delivering chips, comes and takes a menu and 1 silverware leaving 3 of each. Made no sense. read more

Very good burrito California. It was enough to split with someone and the chips and salsa were good too. Cheese dip is wonderful. The Chimichanga is also really good. Not too crowded and a relaxing atmosphere. The service was ok, not over the top but it was quick. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good Mexican food. read more

Went Friday night and had about a 10 minute wait. Pretty packed. The Margaritas were very good. Ordered the Shrimp Diablo and a chili relleno and they BOTH rocked. The Diablo was very spicy and the relleno was cooked perfect. Definitely be back. read more

Where to start. It was a Friday night so they were busy (seriously, no big deal). We didn't mind waiting. So instead of waiting, they decided to sit us at an OUTDOOR table that they must have drug inside. Not only that, they sat us in the MIDDLE of restaurant, in a walkway. So we scooted our table over as much as it would go. This outdoor table was also placed next to an empty (yes, empty) 6 top. There was also no one else waiting for a table mind you. After waiting for a server my bf asked if we could sit at an empty booth that was realitivy close to the table we were at. Oh man, did we make a mistake. She said yes then threw her arms up in the air yelling at another worker in Spanish. Clearly upset we had asked to move. She then proceeded to throw her pen on the hostess stand out of anger. Real professional. The margaritas were watered down and bland. You'd get a better one out of a pre-made Jose bottle. read more

We really enjoy this place and come here at least twice a month. I personally only order Fish Tacos (yum), and each of us has our favorites. But, best of all is the service - it's first rate! A very well run, quality restaurant with a great, family atmosphere. I highly recommend! read more

El Agave is a family favorite when it comes to Mexican food. They guys who run the place are friendly. The painting on the back wall is of their family farm. The portions are healthy. Beans are lard-free. Vegetables are fresh. Chips and salsa are always refilled. They've got several Mexican beers to choose from. They don't wimp out on their mixed drinks. The servers have a great sense of humor (for all the times we try our broken Spanish on them). A great place to get fed and a nice alternative to some of the other (not-so-great) Mexican food restaurants in the area. read more

Good food at a good price. I had the vegetable quesadilla which was quite delicious. The salsa was tasty but the chips were a little thick for me, but I prefer crispy, thin chips. The guacamole on the side was good too but was slightly runny. I ordered a Dos XX amber 12 oz mug and it tasted slightly soapy/chlorinated. I am not the type to send back food but requested a bottle which they were happy to give me. Overall a good experience. I would come back here for a nice lunch or dinner sometime. read more

Since El Agave opened, I have been eating there at least every other month! The staff is incredibly kind and love to joke and interact with the customers, rather than just "waiting" on them! The food is good and consistent with the main dishes always arriving with perfection! My regular dish is enchiladas which are always cooked perfectly and made to order! I used to love coming here. The food is great. The service sucks. My family and I (3 of us) sat there with our drinks and chips and salsa for 20 minutes. All the servers stood around talking while we waited to order. Finally we walked out. Right after we walked out, we could see them through the window, they immediately started bussing our table. I don't get it. We've had to wait forever for our check a couple times, but never sat for 20 minutes waiting to order. It will be a long time, if ever, before we go back. read more

I love El Agave and go there almost once a week. Their service is fantastic and the food is always good. It can get crowded, so expect a wait on the weekends (they do not accept reservations), but they work to turn tables quickly. This is a casual restaurant that is much bettter than places like El Maguey and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a fun place to have a cheap, Mexican dinner. read more
