Stopped in here on Saturday afternoon while passing through Hico. What a find! I adore finding these fabulous places in small towns. My husband and I each had a sandwich. I had the jalapeño grilled cheese. It was amazing. I also got a chocolate malt to go which was made perfectly. The two young people that were working the store were so friendly. My only disappointment is that I don't live closer to get to come more often but I will make it a point to return some day. read more

We almost missed trying this place since the basic yelp screen said ice cream and frozen yogurt, not until I delved deeper into yelp did I see a pic with food and sandwiches listed after the treats. I am not a frequent reviewer, so when I do review, I've got something important to say. In this case, that thing is POTATO SALAD AND KINDNESS. We stopped in with our kids on a Saturday road trip, and I didn't have high hopes-- usually 16 reviews is a gamble, even if they are good reviews. We accidentally walked into the liquor store which shares a building (and owner) with Eis. Staff was SO friendly, and the wine selection was actually pretty awesome-- a really nicely curated selection even for a larger city so it was a treat to see in a small town. The owner could not have been kinder. Finally made it next door to Eis. My kids ate ice cream for lunch-- it was from a local creamery and they had just opened the carton so it was FRESH. It was not crappy Blue Bell, either-- a nice change of pace for small town Texas eateries. I had a ham sandwich on jalapeño cheese bread and a side of pasta salad; my husband had the turkey melt on white with potato salad. We split and shared. It was all really good-- the bread was locally sourced and toasted just perfectly, and it was so buttery and soft. The winner though? The hubs-- hands down the turkey and potato salad were the better of the two, which is saying something because my choices were excellent. Two more things worth mentioning-- the owners and staff are so nice. SO, so nice. Friendly, and real proud of their product. Lastly, bathrooms are clean. Incredibly. This from a mama traveling with her kids. Not a speck of dust even in the corners or on the baseboards. Bravo! read more

My family and I went here for lunch on Monday. We had never been here before but we are not returning. The cashier, Amber, and her helper (don't know her name; could have been the owner) were not wearing masks. I don't know whether the people who prepared our food were wearing them because they could not be seen from the dining room. There is NO excuse for this. We've been living with this pandemic since March. People are STILL getting sick and dying. How many more have to die before everyone in this country takes it seriously and wears a mask in public? I will be calling the TX Dept of Health and Hico Chamber of Commerce about this. This situation is hypocritical of the restaurant employees considering that they have a hand sanitizer station outside of the restaurant asking customers to use it, but the workers can't be bothered to wear masks. read more

Excellent!!!! Heading to San Antonio for a graduation and dreading the usual Dairy Queen stop. I decided to hit up yelp for some suggestions. I picked Eis and My family absolutely loved every bit of food we ordered. All four of us ordered something different. Turkey melt, chicken salad, grilled cheese and grilled pimento cheese. Sides were potato salad, pasta salad and the plates come with two garlic dill pickle slices. We left nothing. It was absolutely delicious! I'm so excited to have a new stop on my route to San Antonio. We also had ice cream after lunch and it was super creamy and tasty. We asked and were told Eis is German for ice cream. We took the back roads back to Austin and stopped for gas and lunch in Hico. This lunch place is so awesome! My husband and I both had the turkey melt on the jalapeño sourdough. I kinda wish we would have ordered two different meals, but neither of us were going to budge from the turkey melt. It was one of those sandwiches that when you eat it all and you realize its gone, you're sad. But man, it was so good! The guys working were really friendly, place was clean, 5 stars all around. We had lunch at the Eis Cafe in April when we were on our way to Fredericksburg to see the wildflowers. We had the most delicious smoked chicken salad sandwich any of us had ever eaten! It was amazingly good! We had a nice conversation with the young man who owns the shop and learned that they use all local or Texas-made products. I told my children about how good the food was, so my daughter, son-in-law, and I stopped in again last week on our way to the beach. The chicken salad sandwich was as delicious as I remembered it being. Their pimento cheese was also very tasty - rather hot & spicy - but so good! All of us were very happy with our lunches! I highly recommend stopping at the Eis Cafe if you want a very tasty lunch! read more
