This review is for Edit overall, but for stylist Annie in particular. If you are at all particular about your hair or interested in an edgier, more conceptual look, you'll want to read on. First, Edit. My experience at Edit was superb. They've cracked the code on how to make booking an appointment a seamless, painless process. Note to competitors: how difficult is it, really, to allow people to book over email or a website? This is service 101 stuff in the year 2012. The interior is very welcoming, starting with your personal greeting from a very handsome English Bulldog. The space has an unfinished, urban studio feeling that is unpretentious and not overly concepted.The support staff--who may or may not have been the owners of the place--were cheerful and happy to chat. A far cry from trendier-than-thou Wicker Park salons. On to my stylist, Annie. First of all, you can't miss her. She's the rangy six-footer with excellent style and Marilyn-esque blonde locks. She is ridiculously fun to chat with and she is a master of the hilarious anecdote. But this is where I can make a very enthusiastic, pointed recommendation. If you have any ambition at all to take your hair to the next level, do anything out of the box, or create a style that will be uniquely yours and yours alone, Annie is hands down your best bet in the city. She will see your hair as a sculptor sees an untouched block of marble and architect it into something beautiful. She truly seems to have an innate ability to understand what you're going for--and then make it so much better than you could have imagined. This is why you should believe me. I am obsessed with having good hair. Nay, great hair. I've always been known as the person with impeccable, runway ready hair. Now, I'm a queer person, so I'm not talking about "long layers" or Rachel-from-Friends bullshit. I'm talking about hot, genderqueer coifs that show off my cheekbones and make me look like a Patrick Nagel painting come to life. It's pretty difficult in this city to get someone who understands that. Usually, when you walk into a fancy salon and they sense you have two X chromosomes, they'll either try to convince you to go for a "softer" look or they'll just cut your hair to match your perceived gender expression, even if you ask them for something more masculine. Not so with Annie. She got it right away. She whipped out that Zero-Guard and gave me the best haircut of my life. She didn't make me feel uncomfortable for wanting something more masculine. She just rocked it. Undercuts, asymmetry, you name it--she can do anything. I have a pretty difficult hairline in the back, and one or two troublesome cowlicks. But Annie understood the landscape of my noggin immediately and created a hairstyle that not only manages these follicular difficulties, but makes them look *good*. I am not kidding when I say I get compliments on my haircut every single day of the week. In closing, if you haven't checked out Edit yet, I enthusiastically recommend that you do. My experience with Edit was fantabulous from start to finish. Consultation with Amy was quick and painless--she's a great listener and knows how to calm nervous wrecks (me!) and get them excited about getting their hair did. A few days later, I came back in to get my hair done as discussed during the consultation. I admitted to be nervous again and she was patient and reassured me I'd love it (yeah, I know, people do that.. but this was different!). We talked through the procedure again, and she talked me through everything she was doing as she did it--which I love her for. Her colors are superb. If you google images of ombre dark hair, most of it look terrible because there's such a disconnect between the darker and lighter colors. Amy was able to make the colors blend so well that the border lines aren't noticeable. I asked that it not be so in-your-face-i-did-something-with-my-hair because I wanted it to look soft and didn't want that brassiness--she made the perfect gradient from dark brown to almost caramel. I've been talking about her awesomeness non-stop to friends here and there who have any color concerns. So I guess it's time to take this to the next level: Amy--will you be my colorist fo' life? When I sat down in Patrick's chair for the first time and he asked me, "Is that your natural curl?" with a touch of glee in his voice, I dared to hope that maybe I had finally found The One. For years I've sought a stylist who could cut my wavy hair so that I could wear it straight or curly without a ton of fuss. When my mother declared this the best haircut I've had IN MY ENTIRE LIFE that sealed the deal. (If your mother is as opinionated about your hair as mine is, you understand) Pat, I'm yours for life. After spending a solid 10 minutes chatting with me about the history of my hairstyling woes, Patrick assured me that he could help me look like I actually styled my hair to be curly instead of looking like I just didn't feel like fixing my hair, which was the look I'd been sporting all summer. He explained that it may not be as smooth when I wore it straight, but I was willing to take that risk. And a couple days later, when I tried it straight, it was perfect. Swoon... It's true that you get what you pay for, so Patrick is not cheap, but if I could credit the number of compliments I've received on my hair since I saw him against the cost, it's a bargain. I don't spend much time writing reviews, but this one is worthwhile. I'm new to Chicago and found Edit Salon on Yelp after being impressed (though not without a touch of skepticism) by all the 5-star reviews. I've spent the last year growing out a very short cut - which I loved, but wanted to try something longer - and needed a solid trim...so I booked an appointment with Patrick and crossed my fingers. I immediately loved the look of the salon, the friendly and laid-back atmosphere, even Herbie (and I'm scared of dogs! But he's a sweetheart). Patrick and I chatted about his vision for my hair, and I was on board. Chop chop chop away...Now here comes the part where I have to be completely honest: I actually left NOT really loving my haircut. It wasn't much of a change (in fact, my boyfriend came home from a business trip and didn't even notice! And yes, he IS a perceptive dude who also pays a pretty penny to get his hair done). I was also disappointed to find that little bits and pieces were curling in odd ways... At this point, I wasn't sure what to do. Would I be THAT girl asking for a do-over? It's that same feeling you get when you send back a dish in a nice restaurant. You're not sure if it's you or the dish, and you're not sure you want to find out. But I figured why not - Patrick was really nice and it just seems like that kind of salon. So I emailed Dina (yes, they email their clients!) and she immediately agreed to have me come back in for a fix. I just left the salon a couple hours ago and LOVE my new cut. I've been trying to grow my hair for the longest time, with no success. It becomes brittle, dry, damaged, and everything else you can imagine. I tried micro-loop hair extensions but they only made matters worse - I ended up with thin, lifeless hair. So after some research here in Yelp I decided to go with Edit salon because I read many good reviews from my fellow yelpers, and also had a friend who's a regular this place. I didn't pick a stylist, as I wanted (NEEDED) an appointment today. They placed me with Johnny, this extremely friendly Lebanese stylist. And he did a PERFECT job! I am so happy with my result! Johnny is extremely skilled. He explained to me how he would ideally "fix" my hair, step by step. Oh, and you haven't lived until you experience his scalp massage. I was in heaven! And on top of it all he is the nicest and sweetest person! In love with him! I feel so pretty right now. This was an incredible salon experience ( relatively quick too! As I hate spending hours in a salon). Best of all they are located in my hood, which will most definitely contribute to make me a regular! I've lived in Chicago for 8 years now and I haven't really found my go-to salon. I was always looking for a salon that well, did a great job (obviously) and was convenient for me to get to (no car). Obviously price is a concern, but I've learned over the years that if you want quality, you do have to pay for it. Enter Edit. Two blocks from my home and Patrick who has tons of experience (I actually went to him a couple times when he was at his last salon). Perfect fit! Patrick and Dina (his wife) opened up this salon 9 months ago and it is such a great addition to the neighborhood. They are courteous, professional and truly great people. I highly recommend Patrick for anyone looking for a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair. I have long curly hair, and could never find anyone who knew how to do anything even remotely interesting with my hair (without straightening it first, which basically ensures that it is not going to look the same once you get home and wash it!). I finally met Patrick seven years ago, and I haven't gone to anyone else since. Patrick always gives me a cut that is cute, easy to wear, and looks great even after I wash and style it myself. Since then, two of my curly-haired friends have gone to Patrick and have been equally enthusiastic (one of them now goes to him regularly, and the other lives in Toronto and is already planning her next visit to Chicago so she can get her hair cut by him again). The great thing is, we don't all have the same haircut. I feel like so many other hair stylists have the one cut that they always do for long curly hair, but that isn't the case with Patrick. His haircuts also tend to last, so you don't need to rush back two months later. I can't recommend him enough. You have to book in advance, but he is worth waiting for. read more

I love Edit! I found them based on a simple Yelp search for "ombre." Amy is a fantastic colorist and knows how to execute the ombre perfectly. I recently decided to tame down my ombre and she gave me a gorgeous color with some subtle highlights in the mix. I couldn't be happier. Natalie does my cuts and she does a fantastic consult. Everything from hair car to a great cut, she knows her stuff. I recently went out and had a random guy say that my hair looked like a commercial. Doesn't get any better than that, amirite? It is like a scene from a movie... I walk down a near desolate stretch of Chicago Avenue which lacks the hustle and bustle of the more eastern section of the street populated by skyscrapers, restaurants, big-name stores, and the ever-present tourist. I come upon a nondescript storefront and enter. I whisper something to the hostess and then I am ushered to the backroom by Herbie, a burly specimen with an intense gaze. He waits with me but does not speak. He comes closer. Still staring at me. I finally give in, lean down, and pet his big, broad head and hefty body. As adorable as he is, this bulldog puppy is not the main reason I came to Edit Salon. I came for Yvette Bentley. I am addicted to the E! Channel and intrigued by celebrities and their sometimes-odd habits, especially how some would go to great lengths to fly their stylists out on location with them. I mean, REALLY - it is JUST hair! How I would come to eat those words... Yvette Bentley's title might as well be Colorist Extraordinaire. She is hip, funky, and has some mad skills. With a wave of her magic color wand, she has bestowed highlights and lowlights and taken me from black to brown to copper to red to purple with such transparency that some people thought that it was my natural color. Yes, she IS that good. And YES, I would fly her out just to do my hair. If I were going to design a salon, it would look like Edit. The décor is modern, hip, and funky yet comfortable and inviting - I want to live there. The place has a very calming aura about it and you know that you are in for something special. I first went to Edit salon a few weeks ago and my experience confirmed that every great recommendation it has received thus far is rightly deserved. The salon itself is an intersection of mid-century/classic and urban/contemporary styles that creates a polished, yet warm environment. The great customer service only enhances the experience. Upon entering you are greeted by a friendly english bulldog and an inviting receptionist. While waiting, you are offered a variety of refreshments and a view of the skilled team at work. I know they have a very talented group of stylists and colorists at Edit, but Annie has been cutting my hair for years and I have never had a better stylist. She's a 6'0" tall blonde bombshell with awesome charisma and insane talent. I have yet to get a cut from her that I am not satisfied with. She listens, understands and delivers with a sincere enthusiasm. Her knowledge of the trade gives her a competitive edge and the ability to do anything: long, short, layers, asymmetrical, etc. with such precision. I can't say enough on how much I love this place!! Couple of days ago, I had a very traumatizing hair experience at Strands and Trends Salon in Lakeview. I had a picture of the hair color, highlight, and style that I wanted (which I learned was an Ombre). The stylist of that salon, who was the owner and supposedly a stylist/ colorist, applied this disgusting copper-orangish thick highlights along my hairline from the root of my hair to the ends. I looked like a halloween skunk. It was horrible!! And then I discovered Edit Salon through Yelp.com. With the outstanding reviews, I had to check it out. I am so glad I did because I met Amy. She is awesome and talented. She completely transformed my hair into something that came out of the magazine. I was amazed on how well my hair turned out. Her Ombre technique is to a tee. So after moving to Chicago from Los Angeles it was clear there were a couple things I needed to find (aside from a winter coat, hat and gloves). Close to the top of the list was a new hair stylist. I went to a couple people based off recommendations but none were as good as my girl out West. That's until I met Patrick. At the time he was another recommendation so I thought i'd give him a shot. I wanted to cut my hair and put some highlighted colors on it just like the trend in social media and I do not know how to do it and I decided to visit a salon. I searched for some good salons in the area and I found Edit Salon. I then requested for an appointment and luckily they quickly respond on my request. I went to the store and I found Patrick who is very nice and he told me that he is in charge to cut my hair. I told him everything I want and he is very attentive. While waiting, I observed that the place is very clean and the background music is nice. Then after it, I met Daniel who will put highlights in my hair. I never felt bored the whole duration of my stay there because they were funny and friendly. The result of everything was amazing. The purple highlights is perfect and I absolutely love it. Everyone at Edit is incredibly kind and approachable. They make me feel at ease when I come in. Specifically to note: Allison Elmore is THE BEST hair colorist to see in the city of Chicago. If I had to pick two words to describe my experience with Allison it would be comfortable & consistent. Allison made me feel very comfortable right from our first initial consult. She took the time to understand the look I was trying to achieve and also took into consideration the texture and health of my hair. She has a natural ability to put me at ease. From the first balayage I received with Allison I knew that she was my "go-to" hair colorist; most likely forever if we remain in the same cities. The results I receive are both consistent from visit to visit, and also consistent with my vision. She communicates what is both possible and unrealistic regarding the color goals that I am trying to achieve. Expectations around hair color results are established upfront so there are no surprises. The results I've gotten with Allison have aligned with my expectations 100% of the time. I love her confidence and expertise in making suggestions for how we should approach my hair color. It is clear that she has a wealth of expertise and professional education. Allison is a solid 10/10. I can't imagine getting my hair colored by anyone else at this point. He is not only an amazing stylist but an amazing person. I love the fact that I really don't have to say much and can simply trust that he will make my hair work. As an aside, edit has also been very supportive of my philanthropic endeavors over the past two years in donating a cut or color for fundraisers I've hosted. Just had the best hair cut with Chase at Edit. I've had quite a few less than stellar cuts in the past few years and I'm so relieved that is behind me now. I've wanted a shorter cut for awhile but with thick and frizzy hair, this hasn't been easy. Chase listened to all the issues I've had in with my hair, and gave me a cut I can make look great on my own without a lot of styling. I believe I was one of the first to review Edit and that was 5 years ago. A lot has changed since then; for me and for the salon. Edit is a success; but I think this wasn't a surprise given the owners talent and care for their customers. As for me, I am now a stay at home mom, so I actually have to think about my expenses very carefully. My sister, who's also a SAM, recommended Crisby. She's never stirred me wrong, so I saw him. I've seen Crisby twice now, but I think I only get my hair cut once a year to be honest. I usually forget to get a hair cut and only realize it when it's taking too long to wash my hair. Anyway, Crisby is great! I've never had to show him a picture of what I want, partly because I don't really know what I want, and all I really care about is being able to put my hair up in a pony if needed. He knew how to liven up my boring straight hair and still make it extremely easy to style. My idea of styling is a wash, air dry, sleep on it,and see how my bedhead looks the next day. I do straighten out some of the frizz if I have to be in public, and the public has very positive reactions, thankfully. So there you are... Edit is still my go to salon! A fantastic experience from booking with LaRae via the request button in the website, to color with Shana, and a cut with Patrick. At every step I felt heard and supported by the staff at Edit. I walked in for the first time with truly raggedy hair that hadn't been touched in 9months. Shana and Pat took the time to hear my vision for my hair, look at pictures of my inspiration, and offer their insight. I walked out feeling like a new person. Patrick took the time to teach me how to style my naturally curly hair, something I have NEVER known. And gave me a cut that showcases my natural hair texture and makes it look stylish instead of unruly. He even gave me a spray bottle from his private stash so I could wet down my hair exactly as he was showing me. I mean who does that! So kind. Shana matched my gloss color to my eyes and gave me a cool wintery hue to my hair that is downright romantic. I'm so incredibly impressed by the kindness and talent at Edit, I will be returning as long as I live in chicago. In a time where interacting with strangers is so rare, it was so moving to be so warmly welcomed and heard by the staff at Edit. Everyone was wearing a mask without exception, hand sanitizer is prominently placed and utilized. I witnessed many sanitizing practices in between and during client services.
