After moving to Chicago from Atlanta, I bounced around looking for a salon that I absolutely loved. It took more than four years for me to find it, but I did! Hands down, Edit Salon is the best cut and color in Chicago. The stylists are knowleable and patient. I really feel like they take my ideas and opinions to heart - great listeners! They take their time with each client and you can tell they're passionate about their work. If you have time to book in advance, I recommend Allison for color and Patrick for cut. I've tried to go silver-y blonde for many years, Allison is the first person to absolutely nail it! My color turned out so lovely the last time I visited, I teared up a little during the blow out. A very satisfied client! I was very lucky to find a last minute appointment with a hairstylist on a Saturday. I was paired up with Tara. I recently got a long bob after years of long layered hair. At first I was content with my new hair, but I wasn't 100% happy. I felt the ends needed to be much thinner. I am not a fan of blunt ends. Despite having shorter hair, my hair felt thicker and heavy. After searching on Yelp, I found Edit Salon. I was anxious to come in at first because I wasn't sure anyone would understand what I really want on my hair. I left very happy because Tara got it on point! I even got a couple pointers on different techniques to style my new hairstyle. The salon is cute and clean. Staff is friendly and offered refreshments while waiting. They take your coat while you get a haircut so don't worry about that. Bus stop for bus 66 is right in front to go E. Yes, I had to be a good samaritan and return the favor that all the other yelpers have contributed to talking about the now infamous Edit Salon on yelp. I had my hair at the length I wanted and with the cut I wanted, however, I was bored and needed a change. So I decided to color my hair for the first time ever and booked an appointment with the very famous Amy. She is AWESOME, stunning and really very cool. Due to yelp, this girl has gotten clients flying in from Texas, Washington and NYC and they have been open just a year this month! Wow! So yeah, be grateful you live in Chicago and have access to her! Price wise, all the other salons with similar (but still less awesome) reviews, are more expensive or around the same range, so you might as well pay for the best new salon of 2012 voted by Chicago Magazine. I started going to Edit about a year ago at the recommendation of a friend. I wanted to chop and lighten my wedding hair and I've continued chopping my hair ever since!!! Allison is an absolutely incredible colorist. Not only is she the most talented, meticulous colorist I've ever been to, but she is also so much fun. Sitting in her chair is like sitting with a friend. Plus, she's not afraid to put me in my place when I'm being crazy about my hair color! (I legit complained about my color because of the lighting in a selfie... and she still likes me.) Also, I have very serious allergies that are contact-based, and Allison always makes sure to tell the fab ladies washing my hair about my allergies and which products I can or cannot use. Chase is an insanely talented stylist, and he is an absolutely delightful person. I love sitting in his chair chatting about life and watching my hair transform to something even more beautiful than what it was before. In desperate need to find a competent stylist to cut my hair, I took to Yelp for help and this was the ONLY salon with so many 5 star reviews, so naturally I wanted to dig a little deeper. The name Patrick came up in the majority of reviews for being an amazing cutter, so of course, I wanted him to cut my hair. Unfortunately, when I revealed I was black, I was then told that while Patrick is amazing, he is not too familiar with my hair type, however, they did recommend another stylist by the name of Gil who apparently is familiar with black hair. I came across his name in a couple of reviews and that coupled with the assurance of one of the owners whom has known him for many years, buoyed me to give him a try. I LOVE GIL!! He gave me the haircut/style that I desperately wanted! I love it and have received numerous compliments. He was very personable, professional, and knowledgable about my hair and particular products that I should use. Allison dyed my hair and she was amazing, but Tara was the bomb shampoo tech. I have been to various salons and the one thing I hate the most is the timidness most people use when washing my hair. I come here and pay the price for Patrick to make me look good! I essentially pay for him to work his magic and turn my crazy hair into something manageable! It is honestly the most I have ever paid for a cut but I get 2 trims before each cut and it is worth it! I strongly recommend you make an appointment - I normally have to schedule 1-2 months out and I have my trims/cuts scheduled out pretty far in advance. 18 months since a cut - yeesh. I booked Patrick, the owner & got a consult with Michelle on perhaps changing my color. The cut was a bit expensive, but it was a really nice experience. Nice small salon, good distancing protocol, good mask wearing (seriously how hard is it!). Got a great shampoo by Patrick, lovely cut & style. Was thinking of going platinum, & Michelle skillfully counseled me on the pros/cons of this. I'm really glad she just didn't placate me with "sure, I can do that". Travis is truly magical. He is an outstanding hairstylist and educator, and I could not recommend him more. Travis has been my hairstylist for nearly 7 years and I would follow him to the end of earth. I have extremely difficult hair to cut. In fact, it has been called "truth hair" because you have to be a truly skilled hairstylist to cut it well. I know this because I used to work at a huge salon in San Francisco and a lot of the stylists that I worked with had trouble cutting it. The cool thing about Travis is he really knows how to cut hair, which is exactly why he was a teacher for so many years in the past. I'm 25 but now I look like a 45 year old homely soccer mom who drives a minivan... which wasn't the look I was going for. I wanted to cut my long hair to shoulder length and showed a few reference pics and the stylist said ok, I can do that. I already know that when you ask for shoulder length, it has to be cut either a little higher or a little longer, as cutting right at shoulder length will make your hair flip out. But what I got instead is a chin length A-line bob that is SO short in the back. WTF! I had explicitly said earlier that I do not like when the back is shorter than the front. I can't believe she still cut it so short after knowing this. Now, not only do I have to wait forever for my hair to grow out in the back but I'm going to look so stupid with the front pieces of my hair being so much longer. And I will have to spend more money on another haircut to even out this mess. I normally wouldn't write a bad review because everyone has had a bad or unflattering hair cut before... but the fact that my stylist completely disregarded every reference pic as well my personal requests is bad service. I pretended I liked it because what else could I have done? It's not like I have any length left for her to fix this unflattering hair. Please listen to your clients when they tell you about about what they want/don't want, especially if they're doing something drastic to their hair. But also, communicate back to us if there is something you can't do so there is no confusion and your client doesn't leave upset. read more

I first came to Edit after needing a balayage gone horribly wrong corrected. I made an appointment with Amy, and she immediately fixed the horrendous situation I had on my head. Because I'm obsessed with all things hair and makeup, I followed Edit's Instagram (@editsalon) to see all their other work. A couple months ago, they posted about needing a model willing to do pastel colors in their hair for a photo shoot. I reached out hoping I would finally get to go platinum with a twist. While they ended up going in a different direction for that shoot, Allison (another AMAZING colorist), reached out to me about going platinum, a lifelong dream of mine, with the future plan of putting pastels in my hair. I immediately said yes and we did platinum! My hair looked healthy and shiny, which was a surprise for me after having to bleach it twice. Once the platinum was completed, I signed up to be one of their models for their "Afterhours" program. Basically, you let them decide what they do with your hair (both cut and color) as a way for them to get creative in the salon! It's Wednesday nights, and you get treated like royalty while they color and cut your hair, while touching up your makeup for photos. We put the pastels in last night, and I'm beyond in love with how it turned out! If you're looking for a creative new style and fun new color, I highly recommend trying out their Afterhours program!! I have never written a review on Yelp, but I have never received a worse haircut than the one I received here. It may have been an off day for the stylist, as I went a few months before and had a great cut, but I am now stuck with a hairstyle that will take years to grow out. After showing my stylist pictures of the bangs and haircut I was hoping to receive, she then cut an additional 5 inches off the bottom. This in itself wouldn't be too terrible, except that she took my pre-existing bangs and doubled the thickness, so that now they start at the crown of my head and are thicker than any bangs I have ever seen, even in '80s magazines. For context, we had discussed "whispy fringe" bangs. I also had shared that I was in multiple wedding parties over the next few months and did not want anything drastic. As someone who has had bangs for 15+ years and who is pretty adventurous with hairstyles, this is by far is the most unflattering look I have ever had. My hair is not frizzy, but the sheer volume of bang requires flat ironing twice per day to not be puffy. She did not check in on her progress while cutting my hair, nor confirm before making drastic cuts. She simply glanced at the picture and did not show me the cut until complete. Because she cut the bangs so short, it is going to take years for this haircut to grow out, with many awkward in between stages. Even though I want bangs, I now must grow all of them out, as you cannot grow out bangs on the crown of your head without also growing out the ones near your forehead. read more

Odd, that my first review was so great and this one is the opposite, right? I recently got an email saying that Edit Salon has deleted my (4-star) review update because "the update feature should be used to post about a new experience or interaction with a business." So here's my "interaction" with Edit Salon. I loved Edit, and to prove it, here is a portion of the update that I wrote that Yelp deleted: "I really loved coming to Edit. The salon is beautiful and smells good and cool and everyone is nice, and there's an awesome salon-dog, and they give you wine, and one of the owners has a super cool Turin bike that I crush on every time I see it...." I still believe that most of this is true. What has changed is the attitude and customer service that they show toward their customers. The stylist that I was seeing before, recently moved to a new salon. Since he gave me the BEST haircut of my life, I am following him to his new salon for haircuts (if you've ever had a bad haircut, you can't judge me on this). I probably would have kept going to Edit for color, but after this whole review situation.... that's definitely not happening. I choose the companies that I visit based heavily on customer service and deleting a POSITIVE yelp review just cause you don't like it, isn't my idea of good customer service. I have no desire to spend my money somewhere that doesn't even believe in themselves enough to leave a review up that mentions that one of their stylists left. If you're looking for a quality haircut, you'll probably get it here. But if customer service and respect is important to you, I'd look somewhere else. read more

So my review will need some explanation- Shortly after moving to Chicago, I found Edit salon based on the Yelp reviews, which needed to be amazing since I was looking for a salon to cut/color my hair before my wedding. The first time I went I just needed overall color to cover my ombre color. Amy did a great job with the color. The next time I needed a pre-wedding trim, and had Patrick (I think?) who is the owner with his wife. His hair cut was great, I have no complaints with the cut. HOWEVER, his language is foul- and this is coming from a girl who could fit in with the sailors... it's just that after a while, the F-bombs were so frequent, like we were chilling on his couch, that it became inappropriate. He also told me he decided to become a hair stylist because of a trip on acid... what the? I sat and digested my feelings after the experience before I wrote the review, because it's complicated. They have good services, average prices for the city, and an awesome salon bulldog mascot... yet, the first time I met and had my hair cut, the conversation was "fuck this, fuck that".... I still haven't decided if I'll go back since I know they offer a good cut and/or color. It's a service at the end of the day, and there are other places that can offer a good cut but also give you amazing service... I think that's something I need. read more

To start, the place was clean, the vibe was positive, and they were good at following up about appointment scheduling (which is more than can be said for some other salons). However, the whole experience was kind of mediocre. My stylist, Chase, seemed very nervous and was polite but awkward throughout the time there. The cut was decent, but he hacked off a small, but noticeable, chunk off the top when he was trying to thin it out (didn't discover it until I washed my hair the next day). Also, it took longer than expected and the cost was on the higher end for a men's cut - which would both be fine if the cut was awesome. In short, it was decent and I'm not unhappy. But there are so many other interesting barber shops and salons in the city, I'm going to try someplace else before I consider going back. Ps. The bulldog wasn't there when I visited :( read more

I can't understand all the great reviews about this salon. I decided to try it because of the good yelp ratings and was very disappointed by all three visits. The first time, a saw a stylist who is no longer there. She was very professional and the cut was ok, though not really what I asked for. It was difficult to style and did nothing for me. I came back and saw the owner. I have a lot of hair and specifically asked him to remove a lot of the weight. He refused to do that and instead gave me lots of awkward layers that just accentuated the thickness of my hair in all the wrong places. I came back once more, and this time his attempt at removing weight left me with a poofy shelf halfway up my hair that I spent months growing out and having another stylist fix. It seems there is just a lack of technique and understanding of how to manipulate different hair types. On top of this, both haircuts with the owner left a chunk or two longer than the rest of the hair that I had to fix when I got home. I understand that mistakes happen, but at this price point I expect at least the basics to be done right. The experience left something to be desired as the owner kept gossiping about former employees. Again, at this price point I expect better. read more

Highlights: Accommodating, Bumble and Bumble products, reasonably priced, great staff I was looking for a new salon to get my hair cut at and came across Edit Salon when I Googled "best hair salons in Chicago." I read some Yelp reviews and checked out their website. They came highly reviewed and I love Bumble and Bumble hair products. The turnaround response time from submitting a "contact us form" to receiving an email was very prompt, within a day. They asked for specifics such as hair length and how I usually style my hair. Once I responded I hadn't heard from them since they were closed Sunday and Monday. I had requested an appointment for Tuesday, but despite that, they were very accommodating and still fit me in. They scheduled me with Mila and she did not disappoint. She gave me the volume, texture and fresh cut I needed. She's super sweet and very personable. I love the layers! And her pricing was very reasonable, $60 for a haircut. Which like most salons I'm sure pricing varies on the type of stylist. But I will definitely be back!! read more

This review is for Edit overall, but for stylist Annie in particular. If you are at all particular about your hair or interested in an edgier, more conceptual look, you'll want to read on. First, Edit. My experience at Edit was superb. They've cracked the code on how to make booking an appointment a seamless, painless process. Note to competitors: how difficult is it, really, to allow people to book over email or a website? This is service 101 stuff in the year 2012. The interior is very welcoming, starting with your personal greeting from a very handsome English Bulldog. The space has an unfinished, urban studio feeling that is unpretentious and not overly concepted.The support staff--who may or may not have been the owners of the place--were cheerful and happy to chat. A far cry from trendier-than-thou Wicker Park salons. On to my stylist, Annie. First of all, you can't miss her. She's the rangy six-footer with excellent style and Marilyn-esque blonde locks. She is ridiculously fun to chat with and she is a master of the hilarious anecdote. But this is where I can make a very enthusiastic, pointed recommendation. If you have any ambition at all to take your hair to the next level, do anything out of the box, or create a style that will be uniquely yours and yours alone, Annie is hands down your best bet in the city. She will see your hair as a sculptor sees an untouched block of marble and architect it into something beautiful. She truly seems to have an innate ability to understand what you're going for--and then make it so much better than you could have imagined. This is why you should believe me. I am obsessed with having good hair. Nay, great hair. I've always been known as the person with impeccable, runway ready hair. Now, I'm a queer person, so I'm not talking about "long layers" or Rachel-from-Friends bullshit. I'm talking about hot, genderqueer coifs that show off my cheekbones and make me look like a Patrick Nagel painting come to life. It's pretty difficult in this city to get someone who understands that. Usually, when you walk into a fancy salon and they sense you have two X chromosomes, they'll either try to convince you to go for a "softer" look or they'll just cut your hair to match your perceived gender expression, even if you ask them for something more masculine. Not so with Annie. She got it right away. She whipped out that Zero-Guard and gave me the best haircut of my life. She didn't make me feel uncomfortable for wanting something more masculine. She just rocked it. Undercuts, asymmetry, you name it--she can do anything. I have a pretty difficult hairline in the back, and one or two troublesome cowlicks. But Annie understood the landscape of my noggin immediately and created a hairstyle that not only manages these follicular difficulties, but makes them look *good*. I am not kidding when I say I get compliments on my haircut every single day of the week. In closing, if you haven't checked out Edit yet, I enthusiastically recommend that you do. Edit's space is beautiful and the mascot pug makes it hard to not give it additional stars, but okay best describes my haircut experience. My stylist was incredibly nice, and we had pleasant conversation. Since it was my first time, I showed her a picture and discussed my preferences. I didn't hate the end result, but I suspect that she has not worked enough with my hair type, and since it's super thick/coarse, dries much shorter! When I left the salon, the length was about an inch shorter than what I showed a photo of, and where it hit my face was unflattering. After growing it out, I'm much more comfortable. My experience with Edit was fantabulous from start to finish. Consultation with Amy was quick and painless--she's a great listener and knows how to calm nervous wrecks (me!) and get them excited about getting their hair did. A few days later, I came back in to get my hair done as discussed during the consultation. I admitted to be nervous again and she was patient and reassured me I'd love it (yeah, I know, people do that.. but this was different!). We talked through the procedure again, and she talked me through everything she was doing as she did it--which I love her for. Her colors are superb. If you google images of ombre dark hair, most of it look terrible because there's such a disconnect between the darker and lighter colors. Amy was able to make the colors blend so well that the border lines aren't noticeable. I asked that it not be so in-your-face-i-did-something-with-my-hair because I wanted it to look soft and didn't want that brassiness--she made the perfect gradient from dark brown to almost caramel. I've been talking about her awesomeness non-stop to friends here and there who have any color concerns. So I guess it's time to take this to the next level: Amy--will you be my colorist fo' life?
