I chose Shine Nails Chicago after reading about Ericka and following her on Instagram for a while. I had an important Scholarship gala that I was attending and all I could tell her was that I wanted shades of blue gel manicure. This is what she came up with. This is the first manicure I've ever had that didn't hurt. She took time and care with my nails, even extending a broken one to be the same length as the others. I was tired of going to nails salons where they just holler "Pick a color and sit over there," at you when you walk in, and they rush so they can get on to the next customer. The 2nd worst gel set I have ever gotten! It hasn't even been a week and my chrome on my nails is chipping and fading away. Thumb even has small bubbles in the finish. I try to support a black-owned business whenever I can, even if that means that I may not get the 100% satisfaction I look for in an experience. But going to Shine Nails Chicago was below the 50% mark. While the staff is nice, there were several things that were off-putting and unacceptable. 1. Time/Duration I scheduled a 4 p.m. mani-pedi appointment with Deangelo based on a FB special. I was there promptly at the appointment time. About 4:10 p.m., the owner, Ericka, said that she would do my mani. 10 minutes late is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But then, while I was getting my mani, Ericka stopped working on my hands at least twice to talk to the beautician next to her. Again, a minute or two here and there is not a big deal, right? But when you are parked and have to watch your meter, a little time here and there adds up. When I was finally done with my mani, I had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes for my pedi which was done by Deangelo. Needless to say I had to go extend my allotted meter time, which is not just annoying, but adds to the cost of getting your nails done. While I think that Deangelo did a great job with my pedi, he moves very slowly because he is very meticulous and went back to touch up certain things. But, I should not be at a salon for nail services. To be clear, I had put in enough for 3 hours, which brings me to my second point under this factor. I arrived at the salon at 3:46 and did not leave until 7:10. That is just completely unacceptable for getting your nails done. 2. Quality of Service As mentioned above, I have nothing bad to say about the work Deangelo did on my toes. He also gives a great foot rub. My mani, done by the owner, was a waste. First, this was the first ever mani I have gotten that hurt. She filed my nails so low with a rough nail file which hurt. I picked an Opi color. She put a clear Opi finish on top. When I saw how thick and sticky that clear polish was to the point where it formed strings from the bottle to the nails and on top of my nails, I should have just told her to not apply it because, as we all know, when polish gets like that, there is a high likelihood of bubbles later. But, she is the expert and she didn't seem bothered by that, so I just went along. She asked one of the other beauticians to put my hands under an LED nail dryer. When all was dry, what did I see? Bubbles. On each of my fingers. Again, I should have just said something right then and there but I was hoping that they would become less noticeable. They are still there and noticeable today. 3. Overcharge As mentioned, I made an appointment with Deangelo based on a FB special that Shine Nails posted on their page. The special was a $10 mani and $25 pedi if you scheduled with him. I was charged $55. That would be $20 over. Now, even if you can argue that Deangelo did not do my mani and I therefore should pay the regular price for a mani, which $20, that total should be $45. So, still $10 over. And if I call to schedule with a particular person but then another beautician jumps in 10 minutes after my appointed time, I do not believe that it is correct for me to have to pay the regular price for that particular service. So, overall, I was very disappointed and actually angry about this experience. I will not go back there and I have told several friends already not to go there either. Going to get your nails done should be a pleasant and relaxing experience without any surprises. This was the antithesis which is sad because I like supporting black-owned businesses. read more

After a bad experience at my previous nail salon I decided to make a switch to a black-owned shop. A quick internet search pointed me to Shine Nails in the Cermack/South Loop neighborhood. It's a quick walk from the Cermack stop on the Green line. You have to make an appointment online - not sure if they accept walk-ins. I scheduled time with Rhonda for 1pm. I unfortunately showed up 15 minutes late and Rhonda started me around 1:30p. She did a fantastic job on my gel manicure and was a great conversationalist. It was more costly than my old shop (Shine = $40) and they charge a $5 fee if you want to use a card. Overall I will absolutely return to the shop and enjoyed my time at Shine! read more

My experience with Shine is always a positive one. Bink is my technician. She's attentive, pleasant and affordable. They have a million colors to choose from, pedicures are amazing and my brows always look natural. My no-chip mani lives up to its name. I support these women and will continue. read more

Eboni gave me the best pedicure I've ever had. The polish she used was like nothing I've seen at my local salon. Rhonda hooked up my two granddaughters with wonderful and original nail art. This is pathetic! I have called mutliple times via website, facebook..etc which inform me to call regarding certain services but the supplied is a mobile number to which no one answers. People get your businesses together and in proper order...no business should be without a landline in which customers can call and reach someone during working hours and a voice mail for after hours. I've supported shine nails for a few years now, before they were at the current location. I've always thought they were waaay too expensive but still I supported them because I felt like the quality of work was well worth it. Fast forward to my most recent visit at the current location, one word, terrriiiiiiiibleeee!!!!!! I had an appointment scheduled for 4pm to receive a full set and a pedicure. I arrived at maybe 430pm. I waited for maybe an hour before receiving service. The full set was terrible. The nails were placed on crooked and filed badly. Half way through my full set, I asked the technician if DeAngelo would be available to do my pedicure. I was told yes and he should be available after she was done with my full set. After the technician was done with my full set, I walked over to DeAngelo to find out how long it would be before he would be ready for me. He said I would be next. Ok, cool! So I sat in the pedicure chair next to DeAngelo to wait for him because I was extremely tired and just wanted to relax. Maybe 10 minutes went by and the owner, Erica, walks over and says to me, "Excuse me but I believe there has been a miscommunication. This chair is needed and DeAngelo has two more people ahead of you. If you leave or stay is your decision." So at this moment I'm like how rude. I was so tired and wanted to leave so bad but I wanted to get my pedicure because it had been a really long time since I had one and I wanted to get it over with. I moved. There was no apology for the wait. I felt invisible in there after Erica said what she said. The presentation of the information was so rude. I didn't feel like a customer. The way she talked to me was like, we do not need your business we'll survive rather you stay or not. Ok....I waited, finally DeAngelo was ready for me. It was probably 10pm. Erica, the owner, was preparing to leave. She walked over to me before leaving and said, "Can you pay before I leave?" In my head I'm like wow she really knows how to treat her customers. No word to me after being rude until of course she wants her dollars. She told me it would be $40. I said I thought you were having a special today. She said oh the special I mentioned on Facebook, it would be $30. I was so pissed. I was there for almost 8 hours. Not even a week later and my nails were coming off. I inboxed Erica on Facebook about how I was not satisfied with my service and her response was, "I apologize for the way you felt because we try to provide a certain level of customer service. Your feedback will further help us provide better customer service." My God I felt like I received a response from an automatic answering service. Get it together baby. I've been looking for a new place to visit bi weekly for a while! After a friend recommended this place, I decided to try it since it was in walking distance. From the initial phone booking (with the owner Ericka) my experience was excellent! She was extremely accommodating. My services were with D'Angelo! Extremely pleased! He text'd to let me know he was running 15 min behind prior to my arrival...I appreciate that! Upon arrival he took excellent care & payed attention to every detail of my service! My hands and feet were so pampered & pretty! My only wish is that the space was less cluttered & updated! The pedi bowls & mani stations have the appearance of being dirty but they are just worn! A bit of organization will mos def help until they are able to upgrade the space. The price point is comparable to the area and the work is worth it but the space should also be in line with their price point! All that to say, I will continue to visit and hope! lol I've already sent 2 friends there who had the same excellent service but shared my thoughts on the look! read more
