Committing to just one gym is difficult when each person goes through their productive, creative, or hibernation periods. I've wanted a place that made me look forward to going and not finding reasons to skip out. After some time with ClassPass, a 45-day workout challenge and a dozen-full of memorable buddy pass classes later, I finally made a decision I've been happy with since. Basecamp for the win. Love their lower to upper to full body workout schedule, the alternation between cardio and strength, the change/rotation of class layouts, their equipment, and of course, the instructors and team themselves. Special appreciation for the 9am goers because they became a solid community for me when I was going through some post-grad life transitions and turbulence. Somehow, when I was considering what to properly invest in while sacrificing to save money from other things, this was a good alternative investment that has sparked back some love for workout classes again. Well-deserved shout outs to Coaches Nick, Jacqueline, and Oliver and the front desk team. If you're looking for a motivating space, it's a good place for a comeback and a fresh start. Yes, I'm talking to you "New Year, New Me'rs". The time is right around the corner and I promise it's a sweet compliment to the place.

I have never felt more comfortable and empowered in my life: I'm used to coach Ariel, who is amazing, and I dare to venture out to and today had Coach ED IN GLENDALE, when I arrived, I thought maybe I was in an advanced class and Coach Simmy held me accountable to believing in myself that I belonged in that class most importantly that I was capable. I don't know if it's the mission statement. I don't know if it's the core or business objectives of MTK, but the blueprint is clear from their NOHO location to Glendale. WINNERS WIN It takes a lot to impress me. I pay money not only to learn the skill, i you pay for the experience. Worth every penny. And you SWEAT LIKE A MUTHA KICKER! lol

My friend and I came in for our free trial class I'm fairly new to Muay Thai and she's has 5 years…read moreof training under her belt. The gym knew both of these things going in. I understand that pad conditioning is a real and valuable part of Muay Thai training, coaches will hold or hit pads to build a fighter's tolerance to impact, sharpen reflexes, and simulate the unpredictability of a real exchange. That's a legitimate, time-tested method, and I went in expecting and respecting that this sport involves contact. What happened here wasn't that. Within the first 30 seconds of class, during the cardio warm-up jog, before any pad work, drills, or instruction had even started, the instructor came up behind my friend and struck her on the back with a pad, completely unprovoked and with no warning, no context, and no setup that this was a conditioning exercise. She turned around and calmly told him not to hit her like that. His response was to grab his things, walk out, get in his car, and drive off. He never came back. He left a room full of students, including a near-complete beginner with no instructor for the rest of class. Sucker-hitting someone from behind during a warm-up jog isn't conditioning, it's just catching someone off guard, and walking out when she objected isn't discipline, it's a tantrum. Another staff member stepped in and taught the rest of class, and she later texted me offering me a complimentary private training session with her to apologize for such a poor experience. I accepted as I wanted to give her a second chance and take advantage of an opportunity to hone my skills. A few weeks later, when I showed up to the session after confirming with her the day before, I found out she had forgotten about it, and was more than a half an hour away. I felt completely disrespected as I'd left work early, driven over, and reserved time for her to make amends for the gym's previous mistake. It was silly of me to give this establishment a second chance as once again my time was disrespected and wasted by unprofessional behavior. What bothers me most is what an experience like this does to someone's first impression of the sport. Muay Thai should be accessible to everyone as it's a discipline built on technique, respect, and gradual trust between student and coach, not intimidation. Experiences like this that can quietly push people away from a sport before they ever get the chance to actually learn it. That's a real loss, because this sport has so much to offer when it's taught well. I have been encouraging other women, and the LA Muay Thai community at large, especially beginners, to not give this place your time or money.

As a previous reviewer stated, this is a real kickboxing/boxing gym run by a former champion Javier…read more"El Gaucho" Diez, or simply Javi. You're not going to get cheated out of a workout here. I can guarantee you that. Pre-covid, I was a regular here for years in his kickboxing classes before taking some time off. I started out in his boxing class and I realized my legs needed something to do, so kickboxing made more sense to me. Glad I made the choice. Javi's gym is in the southern part of greater Pasadena and shares a strip mall with several other businesses. Funny enough, there's a donut shop right next to it, which is tempting after workouts. Parking is sparse, but in mornings there's a lot of space. Inside is a bit tight, but his classes aren't too large, which is a good thing. There's also a ring that takes up most of the facility. Here, you'll often see some of his pro and amateur fighters sparring or jumping rope. On-site, he has extra gloves and tape in case you forget to bring your own or just don't have either (I'd highly recommend getting your own gear). There's also a co-ed restroom that he keeps tidy. The classes run for about an hour long, with Javi at the helm instructing you. There are enough heavy bags to go around, but on some days you'll have to share. The workouts are really intense, and Javi will push you. But he is patient and very approachable. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you get something wrong or need some clarity. Nobody gets left behind. Over the years, he's built an environment that is friendly and welcoming. Javi wants you to learn and will give it his heart and soul in the process. This type of commitment, coupled with a friendly atmosphere, is a rarity in gyms nowadays. Javi himself, and not an assistant, will personally show you proper techniques, from your basic punches and kicks to advanced combos and movement. Everything is practical and makes sense. You will drill them repeatedly until they become embedded in your memory bank. The idea is that these techniques can be applied when you have the opportunity to spar, or in real-life situations (which hopefully never comes to fruition). In between drills, he will run some conditioning exercises to build up your stamina. Over time, you will really notice the difference. I know I did. I am forever thankful for the time I spent in Javi's gym. This is a top-notch facility where you will learn from a real, bonafide professional. Don't bother with the other fly-by-night, 30-minute workout gyms you see pop up around town, or the vanity gyms that social media addicts often use as filler for their IG posts. There's a reason this establishment has been around for years. Come see for yourself.

The space he cultivates here isn't your run of the mill martial arts gym. It's an encouraging, collaborative, and welcoming learning environment where Coach takes time to focus on and refine technical skill, depth of knowledge, and rhythm. I recall in particular how Coach Joe took the time to fix my middle kick in a way that really clicked. He takes special care and attention to help you learn not only the proper form of a move but also the why behind it. Once you have it, it's impossible to forget.
