We starting with a fish cake, that was quite good and included a tangy sweet sauce and a small salad with it. We got the fish cake as the first course of a two-course special. The main entreé was a Hake fish. It was an incredibly light and flaky white fish, that was served with a side salad and side of mash. There were two filets, however it appears one of the filets was not de-boned, which required some extra work on my part. Though, the flavor was fantastic. The sticky toffee pudding was mostly okay, but there was a burnt bitterness to it that was a touch off-putting. Ultimately, it was still satisfactory. Unfortunately, the service here was quite slow. It was difficult to get a waiter's attention for a dessert menu, and I was unable to flag down a waiter to put in my dessert order. After a few failed attempts I went up to the bar to do so. ...And to get the card machine to pay. Also, it really speaks to if you're in a touristy section of town when there's a notice about gratutites not being included. And it was only the 2nd time in my two weeks here that I was asked if I'd like to add a tip. I realize the tone of this review is rather negative because of the bad service on the night, but the food itself was rather good, despite being pricey for the portion provided. The quality of the fish alone is holding onto that fourth star by a thread. Would've been an easy five if the service was up to snuff though.

Note: all my recent vacation in Ireland Yelp reviews will have the same 1st paragraph preamble, for…read morejust the review itself skip to the 2nd paragraph. On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed. As the old adage goes, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." For me, a variant philosophy of this phrase that I like to live by is "when traveling, eat where the locals eat." Our 1st morning in Killarney, the girlfriend & I went down to city center to get some breakfast & found Chateau Café. Tucked into a shopping arcade next to a grocery, Chateau Café did take some finding as we walked right by it before seeing it. Inside was a comfortable but no-frills eatery. The girlfriend & I both ordered the Jumbo Breakfast (3 sausage, 2 rashers, black & white puddings, egg, toast, beans, chips, OJ & coffee (or tea)) from a cafeteria-style counter. Our orders were brought to our table shortly & it was a seriously big & hearty breakfast. All of it was good & very satisfying, too satisfying perhaps as we both fought food coma the rest of the morning. Not being a tourist spot, our food was cheaper than anywhere else in town we had seen. We ate breakfast here again during our stay in Killarney & even grabbed Breakfast Sandwich & Sweet Chili Chicken sandwich takeaway for one of our long road trip sightseeing days. Again, everything was good & cheap. Chateau Café was our go-to spot for breakfast & takeaway in Killarney.

Order at counter and then brought over. Full Irish breakfast offered for 695€. Friendly fast…read moreservice.

A-OK is exactly…read morehow I would describe this place - friendly staff, rough around the edges decor, and good food. I had a cosmo which I feel was out the bottle, way too sweet for being freshly made, not that great but having had a 5 hour drive it went down nicely. Then onto the starters, Alex had the mussels and begin I the baked Brie. The Brie was lovely and perfectly complemented by the cranberry sauce - the cheese literally burst out of its crunchy shell once cut into which I loved. I also tried the mussels, the sauce was rich and tomato-y but the dish wasn't warm enough which made me a tad nervous. Huge portions though! Next to the mains, this is where if I could, I would give it a 3.5. The lam shank was topped with onions and a thin gravy and then cooked in pasty = lamb shank meets beef Wellington. It was great, the lamb fell off the bone and it was really well cooked and juicy meat. Served on a bed of creamy mash and fresh veg. The veg was slightly under cooked sadly but the rest of the dish, fantastic! I tried some of Alex's ham hock and that too was great. Really flavoursome and soft meat - if, however, your not a big fan of Dijon mustard I wouldn't recommend as it's literally covered in it! All of the above including a pint came to around £60 which for the size of the portions and the overall quality we were happy with!
