I've been wanting to try EBISU since it's so close to my house. First time was take out, so I definitely need to come back for dine in. Ordered the Rock & Roll, Sacramento, and EBISU. The Rock & Roll and EBISU are crispy on the outside which is not is stated on the menu. The EBISU is supposed to come with mango and spicy tuna, however the roll did not have mango nor did it have spicy tuna. There was just plain tuna and it seemed cooked. This is a very unique roll because of the way it is cut and separated. I was a little disappointed in the roll itself though. My favorite roll out of the three was the Sacramento. The description was accurate and actually flavorful. The to go containers are really put together and not in your typical styrofoam containers. I also appreciate that they write on the box which roll is which. The interior of the restaurant is very nice too! I understand mistakes happen and the downside to take out is you cannot bring it after taking it home. I would still come back and give them another shot with dine in! read more

This Japanese restaurant is pretty new in Elk Grove. They are in their first week of soft opening. They are doing an excellent job. They did not disappoint. I love the decor of the place. I like the lights over the sushi bar, they were fishes. Besides the main dinning, they have two rooms for bigger size parties and another back room with some more tables. The staff was very nice and provided good service. Our server recommended some dishes to try. He recommended something new in development they are trying out. They called it a poke taco, but to me it was more like a poke bruschetta. It was some poke on a tempura fried seaweed. It was really good. The other food we ordered tasted very good. We enjoyed it. The only thing that was not up to par was the Unagi Don. The dish had six thin slices of unagi over a huge bowl of rice. I'm use to a whole piece of Unagi over rice. Wow! We had a great lunch at ebisu. The tempura was probably the best I have had in the last 10 years in California. Rolls are high quality and so is the ramen. Great service. I've been to Ebisu twice now that it's opened up. Both times, the owner Daisy has been there to greet us and make sure everything tastes good. I had the double toro roll which was very refreshing, there's light sauce on it so you can really taste the fish. I also had hamachi nigiri and they put this piece of vinegar gelatin on top I believe. It went well with the fish! I also had the crispy tuna, which were good two-biter pieces. The decor inside is very nice, it's elegant inside but not flashy which I think is perfect for a sushi restaurant. No doubt I'll be back, it's important to support local businesses like this! read more

Don't come here at all. Called before to ask if they have room for 8 plus a toddler and they said yes. Stated we would be there in 15mins and they said table would be ready. We arrived and table was not ready. We found out from another waitress that they had given our table away. There was several tables open in which they could've simply asked a party who just sit down to move. Instead, when this was brought up to the manager, he was super unapologetic and stated we just can't call for a table. Rather than having a solution, he was super defensive and stated it's not his problem. Others were there waiting on their orders for over an hour. Don't come to this place. If they don't take reservations, they should specify that. Service could be improved. read more

The restaurant is spacious and sushi is good albeit a bit overpriced. CHECK YOUR BILL CAREFULLY. Whether maliciously done or user error, we had an incident where Ebisu almost OVERCHARGED us an extra $50 on our bill. They gave us a paper bill for $110 - the correct amount - and we gave them a credit card. They swiped the card and gave me the screen to sign but now it said $160. They added an extra $50 item to our bill in between us confirming the physical bill (5 mins). When we informed the hostess, she just said, "Sorry, no problem, let me fix this." It's a soft opening so we're willing to chalk it up to user error. But this situation made us very weary of the restaurant. We'll be extra careful when coming back here (which we will!). Sushi Review: - Food is good but a bit overpriced. - Green dragon roll ($15) - Vegetarian and was surprising delicious! They ran out of avocado so they used inari which we think is better. We'll order this again and we aren't even vegetarian. - Chirashi ($19) - 8 pieces of fish + shrimp + egg over hella hella rice. Fish was good! My cousin from the Bay was in town so we hung out for a bit at the bowling alley (yes, we bowled for a bit) and then we got hungry so we decided to head over here because well, my cousin is a usual here. If he says it's a good spot, it's a good spot. Plus, he called them and let them know there was a bunch of us heading there so they could get a table ready for us, and we don't have to wait. It was a Saturday night, not too many people in the lot and not that many people in the restaurant. When we walked in, we received the biggest greeting that I've ever had, well, because my cousin is a regular here. Anyway, they seated us quickly and we ordered some sake almost as soon as we were seated. We ordered a bottle of most expensive one because my cousin was up from the Bay, so it was a mini celebration and get-together. Everyone ordered something different. I ordered the super combo which consists of the ebisu roll (mixed fish, seaweed wrapped crab cake, ebi, avocado, soy wrap in fried panko with special sauce, 8 pieces of sashimi and 8 pieces of nigiri. It doesn't look like it's a lot, but it was a lot. It's also a very pretty presentation. Remember that sake we ordered right when we sat down? Well, it went down so smoothly, and it was super delicious. My 10 year old ordered California roll and miso soup since he doesn't eat a whole lot, and that's his normal ordered Japanese spots. If he's really hungry, he'll order gyoza, but that night, he wasn't too hungry. I love how welcoming this place was and how delicious everything was. Their bathrooms were super clean, too, which is ALWAYS a plus. Parking was super easy, too, and that's definitely an A plus in my book. My family and I are trying new local restaurants and was really looking forward to trying this place. We tried today and ended up walking out after sitting for 30 minutes without any acknowledgment. After about 20 minutes I flagged down the busboy and asked for water and for our server. He brought us water and said he'd find out who our server was and send them over. After another 10 minutes I approached the hostess station and asked if the gentlemen was the owner. He said yes. I proceeded to give him feedback that my family and I had been sitting for roughly 30 minutes without any acknowledgment. He told me California law requires him to give his server breaks. I responded that 4 other tables were sat after us, greeted and orders taken. He then told me he was too busy to deal with me. I grabbed my family and left. I will never go back. This place has the best bento boxes in Elk Grove. A good bento has small tasty nuances that come together to make it great. Salmon cutlet is actually a real cutlet, not those frozen flat pieces that most Japanese restaurants are ordering in. Every time I've come here the salmon was cooked to perfection, crisp perfectly seasoned skin with a moist inside topped with a real teriyaki sauce one that you actually taste the mirin. Rice is cooked perfectly and I can see each individual grain. Spring mix salad always has just the right amount of miso dressing on it and always fresh. The negative reviews that resulted in some pretty 'bye Felicia' responses from the owner had me rolling and I wanted to see the owner in action. The restaurant was mediocre busy. The owner seemed to be having a good time watching the basketball game. She was pleasant and the employees seemed to like her. I did witness what people would say was micro-managing but I also understand that as a strong female Asian owner who cares about her restaurant, it is not out of character. As her employee, you either can handle it or you go elsewhere. The employees there seemed to be fine with her. The food was pricey but the items we ordered were good. Our waiter was friendly and accommodating. The portion sizes varied a bit, but overall it was plentiful. The fried octopus tentacles was probably the only thing I thought was really small for the price and of course I forgot to get a picture. Nice atmosphere, beautiful interior decor, walked in and got seated immediately around 5pm on a weekday. wasn't sure what to get, but was eyeing the specials on the board. Order two items from the board: the double toro roll and the eel clay pot. Also got the cucumber appetizer and the EBISU roll. The cucumber came out first, it was slightly pickled and delicious. Although it was refreshing, the skin was way too thick--could have used cucumber with thinner skin or peel off a bit. The double toro was delightful. Who doesn't want a mouth full of fatty tuna!?. Tuna on tuna on tuna! Highly recommended. Really wanted to like the ebisu, it was basically two simple rolls--shrimp tempura and crab deep fried cut in half. For a roll that was named after the restaurant, it didn't live up to the hype. The clay pot came out last, it was piping hot and topped with an egg, rice was perfectly chard like how it would be in a clay pot. Unagi, sauce and rice compliment each other well--and the cherry on top was the runny egg, altogether, it was pure bliss. My only complaint would probably be the price. read more

The sushi bar itself is fancy and made from specialty wood. The sushi bar chefs are very creative and willing to make whatever we asked for. Each of them brings something unique to this place! I'm a tekka maki lover and their blue fin tuna is outstanding. Sean is an artist at making sushi dishes that should be displayed in an art museum! My friend and I picked up a few rolls for our at-home girls night and they were so yummy!! It was my first time trying Ebisu, so I had her pick out the rolls and we ended up with the Stone Lake and their special. I'm not sure what was in the special roll but it had soft shell crab and it was soooo good! The Stone Lake was interesting because they park fried the eel and I've never seen that before. Lol it was good though! The rolls were pretty big portions too and I loved the little bambu style to go box they packed it in! This place used to be our "go to" Japanese restaurant in Elk Grove. The food was great, service was friendly, and ambiance was inviting. Since the new owners took over, the food is substandard with main dish portions looking more like appetizers, the service is poor, and the environment is uninviting. The presentation of the food used to be a big attraction. But now it gives off more of a lower class vibe. Rumor has it that the place is turning into a buffet. To be honest, it already feels like a buffet environment, and not in a good way. We will be looking for a new Japanese place. read more

It would be nice to know ahead of time that tea cost extra because this is our first time going here so we didn't know. The fish is fresh. The ratio of fish to rice is good and come with good sauce on top. The rice bowl with eel portion is smaller than expected. The price is on the higher end. For a party of 2 our bill is $72 without tip. The toro role was recommended to us but it was my least favorite roll because it has wasabi. If you like to have a kick then this roll will do it. EBISU was so good! I was greeted upon entry and seated right away. I came on a Friday night and it wasn't busy at all. The staff were really friendly and recommended some rolls when I wasn't sure which ones to choose. I was surprised at how quickly my food came out. I ended up getting the fried gyoza, Sacramento roll, Hokkaido roll, and Tiger roll. Out of the three rolls, my favorite one was the Hokkaido roll. I will definitely be back! read more

This was an alternative to another place we planned on trying for dinner; we're so glad we ended up here. We dined in on a Friday night around 6:30. It was fully packed, with people waiting outside. I definitely recommend calling ahead for reservations. They have a large "specials" menu board near the front of the restaurant with changing, off-menu options -- everything was tempting! Since it was our first visit, we tried a few of the house rolls. Drinks: The Sapporo was ice cold and really fresh. We also got a bottle of our favorite yuzu sake. Appetizers: stuffed mushrooms were delicious -- similar to mikunis Flaming Shrooms but more savory-smokey. The portion is smaller as well, which is perfect, and they're already cut in half so they're easy to pick up. Food: We had the Ebisu roll, the Volcano roll, and the Elk Grove Special roll. The Ebisu and Volcano are flash-fried and not heavily battered; the Ebisu was served in 4 vertically-cut pieces, about the equivalent of 2 traditional roll pieces per piece. It was definitely my favorite of the 2 cooked rolls! The sauces it came played with were phenomenal as well. We ended on the Elk Grove Special roll, which was more traditional and raw. This was probably my personal favorite because it was simple but really flavorful, and the fish was very fresh. Place: The restaurant aesthetic is really clean and modern, and the serving ware was upscale and contemporary. They take time to plate every item and their presentation is visually appealing. It seems like a small perk, but it really adds to the dining experience and I would choose this place over a chain for my next celebration. Service: Our waitress was very nice, but very busy and spread thin so we didn't have much interaction. It's definitely a family owned place and I like seeing (presumably the owners?) Intermingling with customers and the casual conversation made it feel really welcoming, I didn't feel rushed out and everyone was really nice and all tables were continuously kept clean. All in all a great first experience, will definitely be coming back! You get what you pay for. 10/10 recommend trying this place over Mikuni for high quality and that mom and pop restaurant feel. read more
