Despite the attributes section saying that they take walk ins and the services section saying they aren't by appointment only, when I arrived I was told they do not take walk ins and are by appointment only so I'd watch out for that, ended up being a big waste of time unfortunately but the guy wasn't rude about it at the very least read more

Best barber shop in CD My barber in CD moved to SODO so I've been on the lookout for a new barber since. I've also been travelling a lot so I haven't been home whenever I felt I'd go crazy if I didn't get a cut so I'd go to the best barber shop close by and it has always worked out. I've been to Earl's barber shop before and I got a really good cut that time. But I've never had a chance to go back so now was the time! I was able to walk in and Jay was available to cut my hair. Wanted to support one of the last remaining Black businesses on 23rd and Union, but tonight after having to sit through a customer speaking about the "faggotry on TV" and having Earl himself positively chime in on the topic, I, a self identified and proud Fag will no longer support a business that will allow customers to feel unsafe and unwelcomed. Expected a Black owned business, in an area where Black culture is being erased block by block, to not be ignorant toward a fellow minority group. Additionally, I won't be supporting Earl's after four attempts to have a good experience here. Four different barbers not listening to specific instructions, and having to come home and fix several areas myself, including my beard, that looked uneven and messy. To begin with I just want to start by saying this opinion has been formulated over about 5 different visits and not just one single bad experience. I could get into all the small things that bother me or could be better but that would make this a short essay so let's just jump right into it. The professionalism and communication is nearly non existent. For the third time I have set an appointment just to show up with someone in the chair and another to go before me. From time to time you understand shit happens and well you just deal with it. However this has happened over and over with no call simply saying "hey running a little behind". It's honestly really a shame. Please Avoid At All Costs! Not Professional and Doesn't Follow Covid-19 standards!! I have never been to a barber shop and the last time I had a professional cut was at least 5 years ago. Jasen "I'm going to keep it professional" Moore is anything but that. I came in Friday September 18, 2020 for a women's hair cut and line up. Their site does not list what services are included with the hair cut so I booked a line up just in case. My appointment was at 4pm I come in and Jasen is finishing up a client and comes over to take my temperature and fill a form out. I'm not in the chair until 4:10-4:15. He told me the line up comes with the cut so that'd he'd cancel that charge and I told him I wasn't sure since the site didn't specify what the hair cut came with so I'd rather book the extra service than not. I tell him I want a trim to make my hair even and then shaped. He acknowledges this so I believe we're on the same page. I'm not sure if this is standard barber shop practice where the client is faced away from the mirror so that they can't see what's going on or just Earl's practice. He also didn't tell me when he was going in to line me up so I have really bad razor burn(?) bumps. Jasen takes 2-3 phone calls while doing my hair and I assume he had other things on his mind due to the fact he told the person on the phone someone was having lots of health issues. His friend comes in and Jasen doesn't take his temperature nor has him sign the form about not having Covid-19 symptoms so this place isn't even following state guidelines, but touts himself as professional. Once he's satisfied with his work he brings out the mirror and asks what I think and I'm horrified. He completely re-landscaped my afro. I have an oval face so this shape makes my long face stand out even more. When I told him it was boyish and that I couldn't even twist up parts of my hair anymore and his response was oh. Then he began to get extremely defensive and mad at me. "look [at the floor] there isn't much hair" I took fault for not being super specific and had even said I'd like to come back once my hair grows back, but that didn't matter. I was on the verge of tears I was ready to pay for it and leave but he offered not to charge and then tried to use that against me and that I had also booked a line up. Clearly if I had an issue with money I wouldn't have come here or booked an extra service that was included with the cut. I had assumed a trim and shape meant trim the uneven hairs and shape what's there and touch base with the client. He kept telling me that he was going to keep it professional over and over again which I take to mean that he's about on the verge to verbally or physically assault me. So I got my things and left. He couldn't even have the professionalism to dust me off so I got to go home with tons of hairs all over me. I really wanted to support a black owned business, but clearly they don't care about their community if they treat and threaten them like this so it's only a matter of time before this place sinks into oblivion. I'm so ashamed of my hair right now my resigned to wearing head wraps and having to visit mom a couple times a week to twist my hair up. read more

We like this place - they are friendly and efficient and very good with my 2.5 year old son ... not over the top on the kid stuff (though they do give him a cushion so he sits high enough and have a kid friendly cover), but, they know how to cut hair and they make him feel both safe and important. The first time I went I got a great haircut from Dell, who is titled as Master Barber on his business card. The second cut I just got, also from Dell, will probably be my last. The "fade" is less of a fade and more of a line on the side of my head. To make matters worse, the line isn't even straight and it's uneven on each side. This place has good reviews and will continue to provide great haircuts for people, much like it did for me my first time there. Don't go if you have hair longer than 1/4" on any part of your head. Also don't go if you want scissors used on your head. Haircut wasn't bad other than being extremely short compared to how I normally have it. However I'm white and this is a black barber shop, so they probably don't have a lot of experience cutting hair like mine. read more

Both Earl and Earl's were great. I dropped in with my son while on a 4-week road trip, and we went to Earls based on Yelp reviews. The shop and the cuts did not disappoint. As a woman I select barbers with care because you never know when these guys might get distracted and start shaping up the front like a man. Or there might be inappropriate entertainment on the screen. Neither was an issue with Earl. We got there about 8:15 and there was one person in the chair and one waiting ahead of us. Earl was quick but not rushed. By the time I got in the chair less than an hour later a second barber arrived and he did a very nice job on my son's hair. The shop was clean, the sports memorabilia was fun and we got great tips on restaurants and businesses in the neigborhood. The CD's longest standing barbershop. Usually get cut by either J or Dell. They cut well and listen to try to get you what you want. Would be 5 stars if there was a reservation system outside of calling, which leads to having to wait if it's busy.
