We met up with some friends who suggested DV8 as a lunch spot. The line was almost out the door and I was intrigued by this place's popularity. As we were waiting, our friend told us the story behind this restaurant and it intrigued me even more. This restaurant employs those recovering from substance abuse and wanting to redirect their lives in a better direction. This 2nd chance opportunity is a chance to deviate from the past. Supposedly, they're also paid higher than minimum wage too. Very cool! And now I understand the clever name for the restaurant! I was happy to see plant-based options on their menu. On the day we were there, their chalkboard had an Impossible Burger and a Watermelon Gazpacho listed on the daily specials. While I wasn't in the mood for an Impossible Burger, I did order the Watermelon Gazpacho made with tomato, cucumber, and jalapeno. Thanks to Yelpers we decided to try DV8 for lunch. What a great experience! The industrial vibe is inviting with good options for indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was friendly and helpful (and patient with our questions). We ordered at the counter and then they bring it fresh to our table. I got the strawberry salad which was big and fresh. I ate the whole thing! My husband got the Monte Cristo- it was a unique combination of flavors that really worked! Of course we had to try one of their cinnamon rolls - today's special flavor was lemon lavender. It was delicious! (I need a nap now!) From beginning to end this was a 5 star experience. This place is all about giving a work opportunity to what they describe as "second chance" applicants; specifically those with substance abuse issues. It's a great notion, but the thing about trying to do this as a restaurant is that this is a competitive marketplace. If it were pure empty virtue-signaling, it would not work. However, it is not. The overall experience is much as ordering from any fast-casual level of restaurant. You're likely to receive enthusiastic greetings from employees who-if anything-appear to be trying too hard. They were doing good business with families and people of all ages cycling through when I was there. The menu is cafe brunch type fare with a local emphasis. Ordering a caramel pecan cinnamon roll meant having the caramel sauce and pecans dumped on top of the cinnamon roll, which was quite a flavor combo. A strawberry salad yielded plenty of fruit, a delicious dressing, and enough almonds to make it substantive. There's plenty else to try, and why wouldn't you? And of course, it bears reminding that the underlying reality is that when you eat out, you're supporting people on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum who have often had some hardships in life. Certainly when I briefly worked in psychiatry a lot of my patients washed dishes and such for a living. So if you're thinking about why one might eat out rather than cook, when cooking at home is cheap and good for you, this is one of the reasons I go out so much. read more

It was high time I tried this place since I'm not only a foodie but a breakfast lover. So the restaurant was kind of cramped when we arrived and remained that way for awhile so sitting was definitely limited. As for the food itself I got the Breakfast Plate and I think the eggs were so salty almost to the point of inedible as I already do not enjoy eating heavily salty food in my daily life but man the bread.. it is by far the best I've ever eaten from a restaurant especially when being paired with the house made jam usually my expectations are low because bread has the tendency to be dry when sitting out for awhile. I would return just for the bread I had I think it was rye toast specifically? When I saw that two Lexington restaurants outranked Louisville restaurants on the list of Yelp's Top 50 Places to Eat in Kentucky for 2020 (https://blog.yelp.com/2020/01/top-50-places-to-eat-in-kentucky), I was 1) mad that Louisville didn't top the list, 2) jealous and 3) eager to try them out. I got to finally try one of those restaurants -- DV8 Kitchen -- when my family and I were passing through Lexington on Saturday. And I can report, yep, I can see why it ranks so high. We were easily able to order ahead for pick-up when we were about 30 minutes outside of Lexington, and our lunch was waiting for us in a bag by the front door when we pulled up. DV8 has several outdoor tables, which made enjoying our lunch even easier. I got the Monte Cristo sandwich. First, that croissant! It was large and soft and flaky. And the mix of meat and sweetness made this like a dessert of a lunch. I also very much enjoyed the tater tots in the shape of Tetris pieces. More things in life should be in Tetris shapes. We also got the 1.5 pound container of chicken salad, which we enjoyed for dinner that night and lunch the next day. I prefer chicken salad that is creamy, with the chicken shredded and incorporated, rather than in large chunks. This was like that. I would get this again and again if I lived in Lexington. But what really sent this up to five stars (as if it wasn't five stars already) was the great service. When I arrived, one of the staff members opened the door for me. It's a simple thing but was a nice touch. And then before leaving, I wanted to scope out the bakery items. I ordered the Lucky Charms Cinnamon Roll, a daily special, and a dozen brioche buns, after finding them sold out of croissants. All of their prices are so affordable too, with a dozen buns for $5.50. Unfortunately, though, my order came out incorrect, with only one bun rather than a dozen. The lady who waited on me, apologized profusely for not ringing me up for the dozen and went in the back to investigate. Turns out they were completely sold out of those too. But to help make it right, she gave me the one brioche bun for free and gave me several samples of their delicious jams. I believe her when she said she was so sorry that they were sold out. The fact that she cared meant a lot. And I can see why they were sold out. It was the end of what looked like a very busy day for them. I will have to make a return trip to get those croissants and buns on another day. And please, DV8, expand into Louisville. You would be immensely popular, and I'd love to claim you as one of Louisville's restaurants! ;-P read more

The coconut cream cinnamon roll was probably the best thing I had from there. I also tried a muffin and it was dry. The grilled chicken sandwich was pretty terrible. This place is awesome. They have a really great mission which is also a cool thing. The service here was phenomenal. They were busy as HELL which just verifies the fact that everyone in town thinks they are awesome. Not only do they have great food, but they also have bakery items that you can buy (like loaves of bread, brioche rolls, cinnamon rolls, etc.). They are doing a "pretty" good job w/ Covid restrictions. There were a couple things here that seemed a bit scary to me. They have a self serve coffee station - several. They did have a box of gloves sitting there off to the side, but even I didn't see those until after I finished touching everything hesitantly. read more

Great atmosphere, love the design. The food we got was great!! I got a Cinnamon Roll with Aztec Coffee Icing and my partner got a Breakfast Reuben with a scrambled egg. The cinnamon roll was so flaky and delicious and the icing was so unique, it smelled strongly of coffee but didn't taste super strongly which I liked, it allowed the cinnamon roll to shine and the icing didn't take over. My partner's Reuben was also incredibly tasty. I also got a sticker and orange marmalade to take home. :) Wish there were more places like this in the world. We also got cold brew which, objectively, was just okay. I think it could've been stronger. One thing I want to point out is that they do offer gluten free buns for sandwiches and they had gluten free cookies at the counter, both of which I didn't see on the online menu but was pleasantly surprised to find out!! We went around 10:30am and it wasn't super busy, which we liked. There's lots of room to sit inside and do work or hang out with friends. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I would have given the food 4 stars; but the staff, coffee, pastries, and mission earned that fifth star! The food was good! Seemed to lack a little seasoning. The fresh cilantro onion and jalapeño on the tacos was awesome! And the biscuit that came with the breakfast platter was soft and fluffy, with a delicious whipped butter. The cinnamon roll was divine, definitely a great addition to split between two people! Loved the coffee, and it is a self serve bar so top it off before you leave. They were fairly busy when we stopped in Sunday morning, but we barely had to wait for our food. Staff were attentive and friendly, and working hard to clean tables and deliver food.
