Lucky us, Shorty's Pub was the closest to our location. Definitely NOT a dive bar. So much charm, character & colorful people! We enjoyed the many conversations with Shorty & his wife, the lovely bartender & the other patrons. Acoustic duo was setting up. Outdoor patio opens in a couple of weeks. Food menu looks amazing. I can't determine what was added or deleted, but it just strikes me as a different menu. I got two dogs all the way without onion in order of fries and a coffee milk The fries came out and my shoestring, which are not exactly my favorite type of fry, but they were fried well. Apparently, if you ask for fat french fries you'll get the thicker cut ones which I will remember for next time. The hot dogs were well cooked and sauced. The buns seemed fresh. Service was friendly and prompt. The inside was largely the same as I remembered it. I sat at the counter and could view the galley kitchen, which seemed to be very clean. Prices weren't bad. I had already gone to Benjamin's for my clams and oysters fix. I was looking for some ribs! Becky's is it go to. But I just wanted to sit down and eat in peace and have a glass of wine. No worries, RI is a BYOB state... So I asked where is the nearest liquor store and the woman behind the counter said right across the street. I put my order in, and left and got a beautiful bottle of wine to have with my dinner. When I came back I was told that that could not be consumed on the premises. It's against the law. ???? I have been to numerous restaurants in Rhode Island that offer BYOB. We had a lively discussion... what she was telling me was inaccurate but she did not want to hear it. I was perplexed. Why would they tell me that the liquor store was across the street knowing I was going there to pick up a bottle of wine? any event read the law but I'd love to hear your comments. Becky's: "There is no such thing as BYOB in Rhode Island; Rhode Island law doesn't allow it." That's incorrect. Rhode Island DBR expressly discusses legal BYOB establishments, and Middletown's ordinance expressly recognizes them One more famous Newport BYOB deserves mention: Winner Winner was repeatedly singled out as one of Newport's best BYOB restaurants--Condé Nast Traveler specifically described it as BYOB. However, because that information is older, I would call before bringing a bottle rather than tell you it's definitely still BYOB today.And there's an important point from our Becky's discussion: I found enough current BYOB restaurants in Rhode Island to make their statement that "there's no such thing as BYOB in Rhode Island" even more clearly wrong. If you'd like, I can broaden this beyond Newport County and find the 10 best BYOB dinner restaurants in all of Rhode Island,
