Weltons Tiny Bakeshop

I planned to take back some treats from Charleston, but we finished all 4 on the ride back home!…read moreTruly a spectacular bakery. I wasn't aware they were James Beard nominated, but it makes sense because the line grew quickly! Despite the line, there were staff passing out samples and menus to help us decide. All staff were extremely kind and helpful! There were plenty of small tables outside to enjoy your order if it's not busy. We ordered the strawberry almond croissant, a strawberry cake that I'm still thinking about, pain au chocolat, and the mushroom focaccia. My husband said they won the best cup of coffee on the trip as well!

Staff had nice attitude, but food and service were mediocre, if not poor. The biggest problem was that at noon they were running out of lots of items on the menu: I first ordered focaccia, sold out. Then breakfast sandwich, sold out. Then Mulffaletta, sold out. Then breakfast plate; the sourdough in it was sold out. I ended up sharing the Mulffaletta with another customer (who offered to share it with me, thanks a lot!!). For Pastel de Nata, I ask them to heat it but they forgot to do so. Moreover, this $3.5 pastry was really really tiny, despite that it was delicious. I also ordered the butter bean salad, but it tasted cheap. In short, I do not recommend it if you want to get some interesting or good cafe food.

It's been quite a while since I made the effort to return to The Harbinger Café on Upper King and…read moreit reminded me instantly why this spot is such a Charleston favorite. The vibe is still effortlessly cozy and creative--flowers, greenery, unusual Christmas gifts, and those little bakery touches that make you want to linger over your latte. This time around, everything felt even better than I remembered. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the service had that relaxed but attentive feel. I tried a couple of their seasonal items, and once again the flavors were bright, fresh, and a little unexpected in the best way. Their baked goods are still the standout--beautifully made, not overly sweet & just delicious. It's the kind of place where you can sit with a book, catch up with a friend, or just enjoy a slow morning with coffee and something delicious. Consistently great atmosphere, consistently great food, and a place that really gets better with every visit. Why did it take so long to return. I've now placed it in the top of my list for a great coffee spot.

Cute place that has a good amount of seating in the back. We got:…read more Grasshopper toast/avocado toast- This was probably our favorite thing and would definitely recommend. It was unique with the different flavors and textures on top that came together really nicely. Almond frangipane scone- I'm not the biggest fan of dried fruit in baked goods, but otherwise thought this was tasty and would want to get a scone/biscuit without dried fruit next time. Would recommend. Cinnamon twist- Tasty! Not mind blowing, but we enjoyed and would get again. Best friend/chocolate chip cookie- Loved that it was crispy on the outside and chewy in the center part and that it used a darker chocolate. Jam sesh- This was not our favorite and we wouldn't get it again. We just didn't think all the flavors worked together. Short + Sweet- The coffee cake was maybe a little overbaked. My friend liked it more than I did, but I didn't feel like I needed to have it again. Overall it's a good place to go with a few people and try a bunch of things and hang out!

We were quoted about 25 minutes for the wait. The hostess took my phone number down and said she would text me to let me know when our table was ready. Since this location is in downtown Charleston, it was easy to wander around outside and keep ourselves entertained until I got the text that our table was about to be ready and we had 10 minutes to check in. Once I checked in, we were seated immediately and told to scan the QR code at the table to see the menu. A few minutes later, our server came by and asked if we wanted coffee or other drinks. After she came back with drinks, she took our order. I got the cornmeal pancakes. They are made of cornmeal so they had a different taste than what I was used to with pancakes. It wasn't a bad taste. They tasted like a combo of sweet, but also savory. They also felt very light so I didn't feel overstuffed after eating them. Because of how busy they are, they got us in and out in less than 40 minutes. There are signs at the table to not stay longer than 90 minutes, but this was no problem here. Just something to keep in mind to not hang around if you're done with your meal and you see a giant wait outside. As we were leaving, other people were being quoted about a 45+ minute wait. Since it's in downtown Charleston, there is no dedicated parking lot. However, there is street parking available nearby. As someone that cannot parallel park, I went the safe route and parked in a parking garage that was close by. I paid $4 for that. Overall, great breakfast place and quick service!

We were quoted an hour when we put our name in, then got a text update saying it would be up to 1.5hrs and we ended up waiting almost 2. We were all very excited about the lucky charms latte so almost our entire table ordered it, some hot, some cold. It was very visually pleasing but unfortunately taste wise, it wasn't anything special and did not taste like lucky charms aside from the actual marshmallows on top. We ordered a cinnamon bun to share as well as entrees. The cinnamon bun was tasty, it was more of a biscuit like texture, different, but good! We were all thoroughly pleased with our entrees, they ranged from frittata and the okra dish to the king street bowl. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and it was worth the longer than anticipated wait.
