Both were really refreshing and a great way to start dinner. One thing we really liked was the ordering style. Once you're seated, you just keep picking out small plates you want to try, just like a lot of dumpling shops in China and Japan. It honestly brought back memories from my trips over there. The atmosphere and decor was beautiful and felt authentic without trying too hard. Our favorites were the Spicy Cucumber Salad, Spicy Green Beans, Beef & Vermicelli Dumplings, Hot Sea Pork and Shrimp Dumplings, Pork & Chive Dumplings, and the Crab Rangoons. Everything was fresh and came out pretty quick. We also ordered the Chicken Lo Mein, but I only had one bite because we bought it to give to a homeless woman we met at the park near where we were staying. The biggest downside is the price. It's very, very expensive for what you get. Dumplings that were basically the same size and quality as ones I ate all over Japan for $4-$7 were over $14 here. A pretty small plate of stir fried green beans being around $20 was kinda hard to justify. The only dishes we really didn't care for were the Chinese Style Broccoli, which was pretty plain and lacked flavor, and the Pork & Mushroom Dumplings. They tasted good, but they were dry enough that I probably wouldn't order them again. Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner and would definitely come back, but probably only for a special occasion. One of the interesting aspects of Harbor Dim Sum is their business partnership with the Asian supermarket next door, giving them access to very fresh seafood--and you can definitely taste it in the dishes. We came for an early brunch and, as usual with dim sum, what was supposed to be a small breakfast quickly turned into a table covered with bamboo baskets! I particularly enjoyed the har gow shrimp dumplings. The wrappers were delicate and translucent, the shrimp were plump and fresh, and they were steamed perfectly. The siu mai were equally generous, topped with a little orange roe and served piping hot directly from the bamboo steamer. We also tried the tripes, one of those traditional dim sum dishes that I always enjoy when properly prepared. The steamed buns were light and fluffy, and the seafood congee was delicate and comforting--a perfect dish for an early brunch. I really love congee! What I always liked was seeing the traditional dim sum carts circulating throughout the dining room, loaded with stacks of bamboo steamers. You simply look, point, ask a few questions and suddenly another basket appears on your table! This old-fashioned Hong Kong and Cantonese style of dim sum service adds a nice homy touch to the experience. The service was fast, efficient and very friendly. Much of it was conducted in Chinese, which was actually another bonus for me because it gave me an opportunity to practice some of my very basic Chinese. For instance, they charge $7 instead of $16 for their dumplings, but they don't state that it's a half portion. Most happy hour items are like this, a half portion that equates to the same price per unit or $1 cheaper per unit compared to the regular menu. It felt a bit misleading and frustrating when you add the inconsistent food quality. I suspect this was a recent change, because many reviews have mentioned the excellent happy hour deals.
