Doesn't look like much when you pass by. But I was dying for hunger and saw decent yelp reviews. Fast forward to the food - so I ordered Crab Rangoon and Chicken Dumplings ($18) to go. After leaving the store I checked bag and noticed my crab Rangoon was missing. Womp womp. I called them to let them know and they offered to either refund or prepare the missing dish. I was down the street so turning around wasn't a big deal. They ended up throwing in a couple of sodas for the inconvenience. Now to the foood.... soooo I was really hoping it would be bomb esp for the long wait but I actually wasn't too impressed. The crab Rangoon was pretty oily and not flavorful. Wow, real Chinese food in Newton! Dumpling House is a nice find for good, satisfying food that hits the spot - and we didn't even order any dumplings! General Guo chicken, house special fried rice, sliced beef and even the Chinese broccoli with garlic were tasty with real depth and substance. I also ordered the beef noodle soup and that was pretty good and satisfying. We're Asians from southern Cal with many hundreds more Chinese options but to come upon this place near closing time and a mostly white neighborhood was much, much better than expected. The soup Dumpling is ok. I still prefer Dumpling Cafe for it in Chinatown. I like the slice fish Szechuan Style most of the time but recently they are making it lackluster flavor. Decided to try the beef version "Sliced Beef Szechuan Style Hot and spicy" It's even worse. The beef is way to chewy Flavor is lacking, Not spicy at all. This place give Szechuan Style a bad name. Apparently serving old meat is the norm here so food poisoning is common. Will never ever eat here again.. SO DISGUSTING! read more

Should be 2 stars, but I want them to do better. Some of their dishes are amazing. No vegetarian dumplings though. And they use MSG in all their dishes! You can request 'no MSG' but its already in the dumplings! I was shocked by this. read more

AMAZING soup dumplings!!! Everything we ordered was delicious; the spicy eggplant with basil, spicy mapo tofu, braised tofu, pickled cucumber... it was all fantastic. I work nearby, so I've driven by a bunch of times but had never gone in. I had a hankering for dumplings though, so why not try a place called the Dumpling House? Makes sense. Since I saw some good reviews for the soup dumplings, I ordered those. Very tasty, but man, be careful biting into them when they first hit the table, as the soup is VERY hot at first. Came 7 to an order. Ate them all and was still hungry, so I got an order of the pork an leek dumplings, steamed, as well. Came 10 to an order, but they are smaller than the soup dumplings. They were also quite tasty. After a combined 17 dumplings eaten, I was stuffed. So it ended up being all dumplings, all the time. Befitting a place with dumplings in its name. The dumplings are good, it was reasonably priced, and it's nearby, so I can't see why I wouldn't go back again. read more

The downside of using site like Yelp to judge a restaurant is that there is such a diversity of levels of food experience that you have to decide whether you trust the reviews. If I had judged Dumpling house based on the Yelp reviews, I never would have gone. People who expect to get General Gao's or Americanized Chinese food should set their expectations differently. Everything about Dumpling House is authentic. Every dish we ordered was spot on, tasty, fresh, not oily and the service on a saturday evening was great and not rushed. We started with Cukes in Garlic chile and sesame which was fiery and opened up our palates. Followed by Cold noodles in a Vinegar sesame oil sauce with fresh veggies. Cool and refreshing. We then moved to pancakes with beef and leeks (my wife's fav of the night ), soup dumplings w crab and pork which was perhaps the juiciest I have had in Boston. We also got a tutoring lesson from the server which was fun . Finally , we got Fried Cumin Lamb which was so crispy, dry with a Szechuan peppercorn mouth numbing yumminess, Braised eggplant w pork (which can often be greasy .This was NOT greasy at all ), rice cakes with pork ( another dish that can be gummy but the rice cakes were firm) and Baby clams with Basil. The clams were perfectly done w licorice basil overtones. I have eaten at both e chinatown and Cambridge locations as well and think this was the most comfortable and complete of all. The food was okay. We got the soup dumplings, shandong dumplings and singapore noodles. The best was the singapore noodles because that was the most flavorful plate of all. It was basically onions, noodles, and egg cooked in curry. There were a few pieces of chicken and shrimp thrown in there. I will say there was definitely more onions than noodles in that dish. The soup dumplings came with a few already broken and soup leaking out of it. It wasn't very flavorful - the dumpling or the soup in the dumpling. Definitely not a top pick for soup dumplings. The shandong dumplings were okay. They must have been juicy cause every time I tried to cut into it or take a bite of it, juices squirted out of it. I almost even hit one of my poor neighbors sitting next to me once. It may have been juicy, but it lacked taste. It was okay, but not a bad option for the area if you're in a pinch. read more

This place is a gem of a Chinese restaurant in Newton. They offer menu items you just can't find anywhere else in the area. As someone who loves spice, they don't disappoint in their flavor. Definitely order the dumplings at Dumping House. I also relish their Schezuan style beef, which is very tender and properly spiced. read more

If you are as understaffed as they were this evening, I think you shouldn't open. The food we ordered was pretty good -- soup dumplings, a pork dish, squid. Not up to the standards of their Cambridge restaurant (as others have remarked) but tasty enough. But the ordeal we had to go through to get the food and to get out of the restaurant was shameful. And it wasn't the staff's fault -- they were running around out of breath trying to keep things going, but there was so much more work than they could handle that the result customer-service-wise was a total disaster. When we entered at almost exactly 6pm on a Sunday evening, the restaurant was far from full: five other tables. But the harried young woman at the register waved in the direction of the tables and told us to sit anywhere we want. We sat down, and it was 15 minutes before we managed to get their attention for a menu. Another 15 minutes to get their attention to give our order. Yes, it was 6:30 before we gave our order. The sole floor staff was the young woman and an extremely harried man who appeared to be the one waiter. Sitting on one of the front table was about 12 plastic bags with take-out orders, which appeared to be taking all of their time -- the man literally running from the kitchen with more of these bags, and the woman preoccupied with record keeping of some sort at the cash register. Almost no attention was going to the seated customers. At one point, a woman at another table got up and took her own condiments from the wait station. Another party was desperately and unsuccessfully trying to get the staff's attention so they could pay. Eventually, at about 6:40 (forty minutes after we'd arrived), the man dumped a plate with the pork on our table. Neither water nor the tea we'd ordered was brought. No rice (which we'd also ordered) either. After trying multiple times to get someone's attention, I got up and asked the woman at the register for our water, tea and rice. Clearly harried, she said "yes, yes", but kept working at the register, and then disappeared into the kitchen. Meanwhile, the man arrived with our rice, but no water or tea. Then, a few minutes later (it was about 6:45 by now), the woman came by with the water, tea and some now superfluous rice. We ate. It was not extraordinary, but fine. Then, of course, it took considerable time to get our check. We asked to take our leftovers home, to which the response was to drop some cartons and a partly ripped paper bag at our table, with no words exchanged, so we could do it ourself. And it took more time of course to actually pay. And then we were done. Honestly, I think the two people charged with serving the tables were doing the best job they could, with as much efficiency as they had been trained for. But this is no way to run a restaurant. One more note: the bill comes in an American Express bill folder, and there is an American Express sticker on the front door. Pretty authentic Chinese food, not altered to meet American taste buds. Soup dumplings were good however don't expect the crabmeat to be obvious for the crabmeat and pork version. The pan fried pork buns looked way too much like frozen bought and reheated and it tasted so too. Dumplings looked hand made though. Scallion pancakes with beef were mediocre with the scallion pancake layers not sufficiently delicate, and tasted a little weirdly sweet. Sacha noodles with watercress and beef were good but lacked some flavor. I liked the mustard and pork soup noodles. Worth returning to. Takeout was ready pretty quick although the cashier lady presents a very frantic, chaotic feel. read more

Went in today for takeout not knowing what I wanted. The host recommended the pork and leek dumplings which were very good. The food took exactly how long he quoted for it to be ready and was very hot and fresh tasting when I got back to work leading me to believe they make dishes to order and do not reheat food. Every time I have food from Dumpling house I am amazed at the depth of flavor. Each dish has its own unique taste. Their chicken cabbage dumplings are like popcorn hard to stop eating. Stopped in for lunch after the Globe's exciting review. I have to confess that Chinese food is not at the top of my list of foods I love. I ordered the pork soup dumplings and the sweet and sour soup. I know, boring. The sweet and sour soup was the best I have had since moving here from NY in 1988. Real sweet and sour soup. Onto the dumplings; they were very good. Not sure the best I have ever had but they came with a dipping sauce that had tiny sliced ginger and lemon. It was soooooo good. I could bottle that stuff and put it on everything. The portion was substantial. 7 buns. I ate the soup and 3 of the dumplings and brought the other 4 home. My only regret was that I forgot to ask for that amazing dipping sauce. Going to go back with a crowd to try more things. Good parking!!!!!! read more

I have had some superb dishes here. The salt and pepper tofu is one of the best Asian dishes I've ever had. It's on the appetizer menu.try it, you'll like it‼‼ another winner are the pork and leek dumplings; steamed. I've tried a number of their dumplings, and in my opinion these take the cake; or should I say, the dumpling‼ there is a main dish called pork w/ mustard greens and tofu. Very unusual and very good. I need to try some other dishes and branch out. I agree w/ the reviewer that posted that the fish in Szechuan sauce/ water is not that spicy and I also detected a sweet flavor.?? I'd like to add that the service has always been excellent. I am one of the white folk; but I favor Chinese restaurants that offer authentic Chinese cooking. The crab Rangoon were perfect lightly fried and stuffed with yummy cream cheese and onion mixture. The waitress recommended that scalion pancake stuffed with beef...they were fantastic! Down hill I went back to this restaurant after not having been there for a long time. I was very disappointed. The Waitress was very confused and after she took our order came back 10 minutes later to reconfirm. When the food came only two out of the three dishes we ordered had arrived. We had the sesame chicken and the mango beef. I think the sauce on both of them was identical. The sauce was way too sweet and very stretchy as if they put too much cornstarch in the sauce. The beef was almost in edible because the quality of the beef was so chewy. I don't think I will be returning there again read more

Great food, but AWESOME service. Literally the worst service I've ever seen in any restaurant. You practically have to jump up and down to get a waiter's attention for even the most basic of things like taking your order or providing water. They routinely forget to bring out something you ordered, or bring the wrong thing. Do not go here if you're in a hurry or looking for a quick bite. They simply don't have enough waiters working most nights, and they clearly haven't been trained. All that said, the food is quite good. My kids love the seafood dumplings, and the shredded beef with string beans is addictively good. The pork steamed buns are also solid, and the wonton soup (which the waiter spilled on our table tonight) is also good...albeit a bit unusual in that they use cilantro. Because of the poor service, we no longer go during normal dinner times or as often as I would like. If they could just fix the wait staff, I'd be there once a week. read more

Even with the low expectations of suburban Americanized Chinese food, Dumpling House is horrendous. Because we were in a pinch, we needed to get pick up takeout quickly. Ordered: beef with broccoli, veggie lomein, and chicken fried rice. The beef dish was swimming in a deep vat of nondescript brown gravy which had a vague vinegary flavor; even the broccoli was overcooked. The veggie lomein had no flavor and slivers of carrots and bean sprouts - as if the noodles were precooked and they just grabbed a handful and put it in the container. Ah - the fried rice: if you can't even make fried rice, don't bother with a restaurant in the burbs... This rice was white - as if it never met a wok. In it was a few slices of white meat chicken that looked boiled and totally lacking flavor. There were some specks of egg, but they tasted microwaved. We'd thought Lobster Wok in Newtonville was terrible, but Dumpling House is even worse. Yuck! read more

Most of the poor reviews of this place focus on the service, but we got take out so this is entirely about the food. I had high hopes since there are some authentic-sounding dishes on the menu, but my hopes were quickly dashed. A picked mustard greens and sliced beef dish was oddly sweet with no real delineation of flavors other than sweet and salty. An eggplant and pork dish was even sweeter with a gloppy texture. Both were too salty and lacked any distinctive touch. Only the salt and pepper tofu was enjoyable, with good spice and and fried to a nice light texture. Maybe the dumplings are better, but the two main dishes we tried were so bad that I would be reluctant to give this place another go. read more

So I grew up in Newton and I wanted to try this place out since the old Chinese place we used to go to closed down . I went here with a couple of my friends. We got seated at one of the tables close to the window. There were not that many people at the restaurant. We ordered some dumplings and chicken wings. It was absolutely disgusting , the chicken wings are over fried and extremely greasy and the dumplings were cold. This was on a Saturday around 2pm, so you would expect the food to be some what fresh right ? Its not just the food that was bad it was the customer service as well. I asked to get a change for a 5$ (5$ to 5 -1$) so we can tip the waiter and leave, the lady at the front desk got mad and screamed across the whole restaurant for another worker to come. She came over and asked me what I needed , I told her I needed change for a 5 she rolled her eyes and took out a small jar and handed over the cash. So I sat down and waited for the waiter to come over so we can get the check, after 10 minutes of waiting he comes over we pay for the food and leave a tip. AND THEN we get into the car, we are about to leave the parking lot , the lady from the front desk and the waiter both run after us , knock on our window, and tell us that we forgot to tip. We payed around 20$ for the food and we gave them a 3$ tip because well it was not that good and we had to wait a very long time. She kept asking us to give her more money for the tip and we told her No. She got all pissed off and kept pointing at my bag and saying "I know you have more money". All I can say now is I am not returning to this place ever again. So rude and terrible food. read more

Just about the worst Chinese food I have had in sometime. The food was just all around bad. We ordered a pork friend rice which had as much pork as a kosher meal. I have had this dish at many other restaurants and can say this was easily the worst one. It was totally unflavored and simple white rice. When I complained I was told this is how it was always prepared this way. Every other restaurant that I've been to has prepared it in a much better fashion. The chicken Lo Mein was just as bad. It was room temp at best and was filled with some type of soy sauce which rendered it virtually tasteless. The only redeeming feature was the crab Rangoons which tasted like store bought Overall this was a very poor experience and I'll not be stopping by anytime soon. read more
