Mother's day my husband took me to Bernard because we used to go years ago and I couldn't wait to get a delicious meal I had there before. (one I remembered because it was amazingly delicious!) We got early reservations but could only sit at a tall table on the bar side, which was fine. The bartender came out to take our order and hopped in the extra chair at our table and took our order, he was friendly and funny and we welcomed his happy joking manner. We ordered and waited, and waited, and waited, fine, we weren't in a big rush anyway. After about 45 minutes The waiter noticed and went to the kitchen to check, and after a bit food started coming, my wonton soup was okay, then came the crab rangoon, thick wontons( no real taste) dry and sadly, filling not really very tasty either. My husband's food came and it was pretty good but then I waited, and waited, again and we realized they had forgotten my main dish! After the mediocre taste of everything else I decided to not wait for, or eat anything else, nor did we want to take any extra home. By now it was at least an hour and a half in. We got the check and explained to the Bartender that it was never brought he was very apologetic and took it off the bill. It was disappointing because we recalled it being SO good. We won't chance it again as it actually was the second time we were not at all impressed, but we gave it another shot. Bye bye Bernards, it's a good memory but you really have slacked off.

I wasn't expecting anything and definitely not expecting any form of "service" as it *is* a Chinese spot. Yet, she spoke to me. She reached out and conversed in a manner that only this culture could really explain. She wanted to know me and why I was even here in this area. One eyebrow up, I explained. Two eyebrows up, almost an hour later, I still explained. All I knew was that she welcomed me and wanted me to feel home. There was nothing else past that. It's just the culture. It's Chinatown outside Chinatown, and Chinatown outside China (and everything else associated with it). They take the time to purchase produce on behalf of their customers at close to cost price. They take the time to welcome people in. I'm one of them - out of place, out of the element - and she gave me almost an hour of her time. She even apologized for the "yellowness" of my order due to the time it sat there while we conversed BUT I simply told her I'd see her again. Her family welcomed me to Massachusetts. And moments later when I dug in to the food I brought home, I knew home was here. They served up some seriously legit Chinese influenced dishes. BEST PART? The posted menu is only a front. How do I know this? She read me and invited me shortly to the private chat group for the daily cuisine specials directed at those wanting to taste home. There is some legit culinary techniques here. I'd voyage more into it but I'll respect the secrecy of it all. Come with respect, explain a genuine intent to partake, and perhaps, you'd be invited to the ball of a lifetime. A server was at our table within moments and gave us our menus. Overall the restaurant looked clean although I did find a stray cooked grain of rice on my table although I am unsure where it came from. We each ordered from the lunch specials (no substitutions) and a soda. I asked for a coke and was brought a Diet Coke in a can. Personally I don't care but it might bother someone who has a strong preference for diet vs regular. My order was the hot and sour soup , fried rice with chicken teriyaki / crab Rangoon / spring roll . The hot and sour soup tasted fine but had a gelatinous consistency. I don't usually order hot and sour soup so I'm not sure if this is the texture it's supposed to have but I found it off putting. The main course is fried rice (rice and egg only no vegetables) - no flavor; 1 crab Rangoon - tasted fine; 1 chicken teriyaki - well cooked and most flavorful thing on the plate; 1 spring roll - beautifully fried and crispy but I didn't enjoy the filling. My sister also ordered scallion pancake for us to share. This too was fried beautifully and crispy but had very little scallion flavor which I suppose is to taste... We were brought napkins and asked once if we were doing ok (I had finished eating already). The price overall was fine ~$15 for the lunch special and ~$2-$3 for the soda. When we left hosts said thank you. Overall, was an ok lunch . Would probably not come again.

I ordered lunch today and was genuinely excited to try this place based on the reviews. A colleague…read moreordered the wonton soup, which looked promising, so my expectations were fairly high. Let me preface this by saying I truly enjoy Asian cuisine, both authentic dishes from various regions and well done American Chinese food. I understand and appreciate the difference between the two. Unfortunately, this experience fell short on both fronts. Several reviews praise the pork fried rice, but what I received was simply rice, soy sauce, and a few bits of pork. Pork fried rice should have depth aromatics, egg, scallions, and proper wok flavor. This did not meet that standard. The General Gau's chicken was served cold and coated in a reddish, lightly spicy sauce, with the majority of the dish consisting of batter rather than chicken. It lacked texture, balance, and freshness. The soups were equally disappointing. The wonton soup tasted like a highly saturated version of the original, lacking real flavor and nuance. The egg drop soup was similar...flat and uninspired. I understand that American Chinese food is its own category, but even within that category, there are many establishments that execute it far better. This meal was not reflective of the praise it receives. I was genuinely looking forward to this lunch and left very disappointed. I hope the owners read this review and take it as constructive feedback. Chinese food is a delicacy for many people, myself included, and it deserves care, balance, and pride in execution. I truly hope the quality improves, because the potential could be there, but this visit missed the mark. I hope the owners review this post

We used to love ordering from GPP, but unfortunately, the quality has really gone downhill while…read morethe prices have continued to go up. Lately, the food often tastes like it has simply been reheated. The rice arrives cold and dry, and the egg rolls--now $8.50 for two--are soggy and taste like they've been sitting around. The chicken satay skewers also seem to be getting smaller and smaller. The chicken lo mein has very little chicken in it; you practically have to dig through the noodles to find a piece. It's disappointing because GPP used to be one of our favorites, but at these prices, the quality and portions simply aren't what they used to be. I hope the owners take notice and correct some of these issues. We will not be ordering from here anymore.

I remember someone in the area once saying that this was one of the best Chinese spots in…read moreWatertown. I didn't think much of that comment since that same person also didn't recommend any Chinese spots that were firmly at the top of my list. Having driven by so many times in the past, I always thought it unusual that the location was always empty. Perhaps, they had a larger following with people ordering to-go (or delivery if they did do so). So finally, having the time and opportunity to stop by for a meal, I decided to stop by and see what it was all about. Trust me, I wanted to really like this place and was hoping to add another go-to spot to the growing list of culinary delights. The lady that served us was exceptionally friendly. Everything seemed clean and organized. The menu was extensive (as expected of any Chinese spots) and had both Chinese and Thai dishes. Since I was particularly hungry in that moment, I ordered enough to binge a little and have some leftovers for later. Both soups tasted great...despite being only slightly warm. That threw me off quite a bit. Since when do Chinese soups come out anything but scalding hot? But what immediately made me frown was the following three mains that came out. The beef and broccoli, while very American Chinese, still incorporates very traditional Cantonese culinary techniques, which is why I usually order it whenever I visit a "non-traditional" Chinese spot (to gauge their culinary finesse). The broccoli was slightly overcooked and soft. The meat tender but the sauce slightly clumped (over-slurried). It doesn't stop there. The fried rice had no wok hei and was quite bland. The pan fried noodles was just as bland and the snow peas that came with it was still quite raw (the raw essence is still very present, which is another culinary faux pax. That said, I can see why some people would like this place. It is non-pretentious with a lot of potential. Perhaps, they were just not having the best day in the kitchen and the person recommending it may have had significantly better experiences here with the food. I may give them a shot again down the road and update accordingly. Wishing this spot the very best!
