This is my favorite restaurant for a casual dinner and a movie date night! Dumpling house is in an adorable house right next to the Belcourt, and has a cute interior and great patio. To me, this is the perfect order for 2: 2 orders of peanut butter dumplings (yes, you need your own because they're that good, and for optimal sauce dipping for your other dumplings too!!) and an order of steamed half chicken coriander half spicy pork dumplings. Definitely don't skip the drinks! I got the lychee dragonfruit tea and added in lychee popping boba this last time. Delish. I haven't been super impressed with some of the items aside from the dumplings - I wouldn't get the hot and sour soup again and could take or leave the cucumber salad. The staff is extremely friendly, service is fast, and everything is delicious and fresh. We had both the steamed and fried dumplings, and I can't say which was better. I won't lie, the fried dumplings were not like what I have had in the past. That being said, I've had several types of dumplings and momos throughout New York and the borough of Queens. The dumplings I received from dumpling house were pan fried, but in a bizarre cake type formation, and I had to break each dumpling off from that fried cake. It was rich and oily. In fact, when I sent a photo to my New York friend, she asked if the dumplings had been prepared in a slab of cheese. I got the curry chicken and the curry beef with onion, however because of the composition, I could not tell them apart. Despite my coworkers saying they always expect spiciness from this place, I got very little spice. That being said, I gave it four stars because I can't fairly give it less. That's because dumpling house offers more, including soups and broth, as well as dumplings that are boiled or steamed. Additionally, my coworkers seem to really love this place. We came in on a gloomy Sunday around 1:30 pm and it was almost empty besides 1 table that was already enjoying their food. The staff was helpful and kind. We place an order for 1/2 spicy pork, 1/2 pork and cabbage steamed dumplings, and a strawberry peach tea. The food is made fresh to order so while there was a little wait for it, it was worth it. Overall, I enjoyed Dumpling House. The outdoor seating area is super cute, with pretty lights on the ceiling. I tried their veggie dumplings pan fried and the spicy tofu appetizer. The veggie dumplings were good, but would have liked them to also have had tofu inside to be more filling. In hindsight, I would have picked steamed dumplings since the pan fried was very oily (they cover the dumplings in a thin batter so it has a crunchy skirt surrounding each dumpling). I didn't really care for the tofu appetizer. It was just silken tofu with their chili oil on top. A little pricey for what we got too. My friend tried the curry chicken and pork dumplings and enjoyed those, they were steamed and much less oily. It was self service with disposable cutlery. Really great dumpling joint. Good variety, though the subtlety of the flavors in the dumplings get a bit lost in presentation (if that makes sense), as well as the accompaniments. Inside is a bit spartan; some decoration and reflective of the task at hand, but not the focused lack of aesthetic that other 'sanitized to the point of "stark"' popular dumpling domiciles I've been. Contrast this with the patio and the sunroom that can't be accessed from the main dining room, and it's an interesting setup. So the food, as the question begs: The novel rift that got crossed, for me, was that the fried dumplings came scraped off the flattop with the batter tying them all together. Meaty but loose inside, crispy crunchy base, and chewy dumpling outers put the texture contrast at the forefront. The sauce for the pizza dumplings was a bit overpowering, but still remarkably good. The peanut butter dumplings were sensational. I don't know if it's bastardized Thai, but don't skip on these, no matter your aversion to peanuts (save that if anaphylaxis and death, but they've got meds for that now, right?). Don't get me wrong here, I found the meal exceptional. Some fine tuning would have found my socks rolling up and down. Single best thing I had: the Asian pickled cucumbers. Savory, slightly sweet, umami abound; a delicate crunch of the cucumbers- I'm not sure if they're all that healthy, but I didn't care. Let me make a point here: I swear allegiance to meat. Meat is where cooking occurs- art and science all in one. Baking? Science and protocol. Cold dishes (salads)? Merely slicing and serving. The application of heat to protein (and this probably applies to the starch realm of dumplings) is where the epicureans get separated from the mailed meal kit mavens takes place. You cook meat well, and we're bigger friends that you probably bargained for. That detour aside, when I say the best thing I had had nothing to do with muscle or sinew, that's a BFD to me. Oh, and order more than remotely necessary. They make for fantastic leftovers, hot or cold. The purveyors know this all too well, as to go boxes are made readily available, self-serve. read more

I recently moved to Nashville and have been looking for authentic, gourmet Asian food spots to check out. Dumpling house has definitely taken a top spot on this list. The dumplings were fresh, warm, and comforting. My friend and I shared the peanut butter pork dumplings, the chive and pork dumplings and the curry beef dumplings. The curry beef and peanut butter pork were definitely the stars. The flavors were immaculate. They're made in house, fresh when you order and you can even see the man preparing them when you order. This spot is so homey (it's literally a house) and feels intimate. The boba drinks were so yummy as well. I got the strawberry cake boba and initially forgot to order with boba, but the waiting staff was so patient and kind and changed the order for me. I happened upon this place when exploring Nashville. It's in a cute little shopping area nearby Vanderbilt, however parking was not easy at all. Pretty much everything in the surrounding area was paid. We did happen to find a parking garage that was free for the first hour, so we parked and the timer started. We entered the restaurant, perused the menu and ordered. The prices were fair for the food, however they offered no drinks. They offered either $1 bottled water or you had to pay for a water cup. That's right...they offered "free water and ice" but provided no cup, you had to pay $1 for the cup TO GET the free water and ice. Additionally, it is a complete self-service restaurant- the only thing they do is bring you the food. You must pick up your utensils/napkins/etc and you also have to clean up after yourself before you leave. So the audacity to ask for a tip when paying was absurd to me. We ordered around 11:50AM. Granted, the restaurant was busy, but it took until 12:32 before we received our food. However, what really grinned my gears was what I witnessed while waiting for my food. Somebody (I'm assuming a family member or friend), emerged from the back while chatting up the employees. They proceeded to talk for a bit and then she came out into the dining area and sat down. She looked at a menu and then ordered. She ordered around 12:15. I think it was MAYBE 5-10 minutes later they brought out multiple dishes she had ordered. Meanwhile, the rest of the dining area (my friend and I, another couple, and a family of about 6 who had also ordered first), was still waiting on all of our food. Okay, I get giving people you know personally preference, but when you have an entire dining room of guests who ordered nearly 30-40 minutes before them literally WATCH you serve them preference, no, then that's not right. And did I mention we were on an hour timer for the parking? We basically had to swallow our food and literally run to our car to make it before we got charged. There was no reason 24 steamed dumplings should have taken nearly an hour to receive. And the final slap in the face was cleaning up after ourselves after being asked for a tip and then having to rush out because they took so long to serve. This was such an awful experience and I cannot recommend this place to anyone. read more

I've tried a bunch of different dumplings. All of the meat ones are delicious. I get them pan fried with a side of cucumbers. If you get them to go, they give you sauce. Otherwise you have to mix your own with soy sauce, vinegar and a dash of chili oil. You can't go wrong with any of their fruit teas either. I like getting Lychee Dragon Fruit with pineapple nata jelly. The drinks are on the sweet side for me so I get it 75% sweet. I came on a Saturday night. It was very busy. The line was long. There weren't any tables. Our friends got there first so they already had a table. We sat in the extended room and it was freezing in there. Our food took an hour too. A bit frustrating. I got the lychee mint drink. I was so excited cus I thought the drinks were soda and lemonade mixed together like how they do it in Asia but it's not. It's either or. But the girl said they could do both for me. It didn't taste like lemonade, just soda. There also wasn't much of a mint flavor present. It was fine tho. I finally got to try the dumpling house. It's been on my list! First of all, it's adorable, and there is plenty of outdoor seating. There was a wait for a table available, and when we got seated, the table wasn't very clean. I had the tiramisu boba, which was delicious and not too sweet, and I loved that the boba wasn't overcooked. The food was flavor my friends, and I shared and ordered different once. We had a chicken curry, spicy pork and veggie dumplings. All of the dumplings are flavorful really good. The soup dumpling was nice flavor broth. There are plenty of fillings and nice sizes. I my only complaint was its in a high price. Be mindful when you order and the pre filled tip amount can add up. Also there was no option to change the tip amount or customize it. Sad to say they fell short on the dumplings. I surely will come back for their redemption but until then, the following are some critiques. Pros: decent amount of seating, legible menu with photos, great customer service, price for quantity, lovely homey atmosphere. Pan-fried curry beef buns were my favorite - no complaints, very tasty! Cons: my BIGGEST complaint - the soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) had no soup, the dough thick/was under steamed making it chewy (photos attached), silverware was not knowingly self grab under the counter. I already paid for the chicken n mushroom but they were out and unfortunately the next item I ordered was cheaper but they didn't refund my difference. Tap water isn't provided so you must purchase bottled water. The price for quality fell short and the exterior was a mess. Flavors for the most part is light unless choosing the curry option. I'ld say if it's your first time and you can handle some spice, dip the dumplings with sauce mixture ( soy sauce + chili oil + dash of vinegar). My first time here with my sister. We ordered the Pork Soup Dumplings, Curry Chicken Dumplings, Veggie Dumplings, and Pan-Fried Curry Beef Dumplings. I was a bit disappointed with the Pork Soup Dumplings because there weren't any soup inside and the wraps were a bit thick....just a little. I came here for a vacation because the Airbnb I was staying at was literally walking distance from the restaurant and we just went last minute because we were about to leave to go back home but let me tell you we got some Boba from here and it was so good. Dumpling House is the perfect addition to Hillsboro Village. Their dumplings are legit, and this is coming from a second generation Chinese-American immigrant whose mother makes some delectable homemamde jiaozi and baozi. These are slightly small in my opinion, but the flavors are on point and the chew of the dumpling skin is perfection. These will cost you a pretty penny if you eat as many dumplings as I do, but if you have a craving, it's worth it. Plus, they also serve up some impressive boba teas and soups on the side. I personally love their pork and chive dumplings, but you can't go wrong with ordering. Their curry beef and onion reminds me of a curry dumpling from a chain I used to get habitually in Taiwan and HK. Honestly, you can't go wrong in any of your orders.
