When you're visiting an AYCE sushi restaurant, it's never about quality but more so, quantity. Sushi Train is a blend of both, in some areas. We visited on a Saturday, about 15 minutes after opening. There were 4 people in the restaurant already and by the time we left, it was busy. I highly recommend coming in right at opening for the freshest sushi and other offerings. Our waitress was kind and attentive. We ordered from the dinner menu since red plates are $5/each. For $27/pp, it made more sense. When you do order from the dinner menu, you have options to order hibachi, kitchen appetizers, and rolls without waiting for them to come around. We ordered gyoza, two miso soups, and a jalepeno tuna appetizer. We were surprised by how many red plates we actually did take and it definitely paid for itself. We will absolutely pay for dinner prices again. The sushi was fresh and all of the rolls we had were good. Again, this is about quantity. I'd say everything was better than a grocery store's sushi selection in comparison. We had a couple of desserts each but those almond cookies were definitely my favorite. Lots of variety, the sushi is made fresh and is a fun experience to try lots of different options. Each sushi plate is clearly marked with a name and ingredients / my kids love the sushi train conveyor. Not to mention, it is one of few AYCE sushi options in Nashville. There is a lunch price (no red plates) which is a value price, but it limits the variety of sushi. Then the dinner options which includes a menu with some appetizers, hibachi and desert varieties too. The ambiance is nice but casual. We usually come here once a month for dinner and have visited this location for a few years. I've heard of Sushi Train for years but I never pulled the trigger to actually go. I've heard over the years from coworkers saying how awesome it is and it's a sushi lover's dream. Well, I don't know what it was like years ago but I can tell you I do not dream of Sushi Train. It's in this old beat up building. I don't know what it was before but it's a bit run down on the inside and out. Maybe this was an old Ryan's, Golden Corral, or Sizzler back in the day. In the nicest way, it's edible and if you're hungry, you'll be full. I ate my money's worth but I don't think I'll ever go back. First, the all you can eat price doesn't include the red plates, which is the choice sushi. Not saying all of the red plate choices were something I wanted, but the regular buffet plates were limited to 2-3 plates of what I actually wanted. Besides, I wasn't going to pay $5 "per plate" on top of the buffet price. A lot of times, all the choice plates were gone to those that sat near the beginning of the conveyor belt. On top of that, you never really knew how long the sushi sat there, which is scary in itself. If your philosophy on food is quantity, not quality, I would 100% say Sushi Train is up your alley. I was so excited to find out we had a conveyer belt sushi in Nashville and this one didn't disappoint! The prices are pretty great at $14 all you can eat for lunch (ends at 3 I believe?) my only complaint is that the red plates cost an entire $5 more per each red plate, I don't mind paying extra for 1-2 nice desserts, but the basic crab stick sushi was also a red plate and $5 for two sticks of artificial crab meat and a little ball of rice is insane. Truly the best way to do All You Can Eat style sushi out there, I wish it was more present in other areas of the country (especially in my hometown), but I really enjoyed having this experience while I was visiting Nashville. For the uninitiated, conveyor belt style eating is done by pulling small plates off a conveyor belt that is continuously moving throughout the dining room. Patrons usually sit around a circular or oval shaped bar, but sometimes you see the conveyor belt meandering all over the place. They can be covered or uncovered, I really appreciated that the conveyor belt at Sushi Train was covered! Much more sanitary. In non-AYCE situations, your plate color corresponds to a price, the staff simply total up your plates. At sushi train, it appears there is an option to go a la carte, but at 25 bucks, I don't understand why you wouldn't go for the all you can eat option unless you just want a snack. Also, the conveyor belt is massive, centrally located to the restaurant and diving in and out or rows of seats. It's a large place, great layout, and the staff works hard to keep it stocked. As much as I loved the format, I will say that most of the sushi I ate was just OK and there were a couple that I didn't like. I did like that not just rolled sushi was circulating, but also nigiri, appetizers, cold salads, and desserts. Your waitress would also take special requests from you for anything you saw on the menu but not on the belt, included in the price! All in all, even if the sushi itself was pretty average, this place gets a 5 from me for their superior style of service, and a format that allows me to try small portions of a great variety of foods, as opposed to committing to large rolls limiting what I can try. They trick you by saying 13.99 then server tells you "red plate" 5 dollars more‍ so that should make it 18.99 for lunch. Anyways the train looks like it would collect germs from everyone breathing on it. I hate to bash this place but I was disappointed bad. I got the hibachi and it was ok. Went into Sushi Train around 1:30 on a Saturday to find a dirty, sad display of sushi. All sushi included in the lunch price was very basic with little to no specialty rolls, and honestly the whole selection was pretty slim in general. The conveyor was not very full so if you didn't sit near the beginning of the line, good luck in getting anything. Beyond that the windows to reach into the conveyor were covered in finger prints, and the whole place was dark and nasty feeling. After watching some measly sushi bites go by, we found out that the red plates (desserts, specialty rolls) on the conveyer were an additional $5 per plate unless you upgraded from the lunch price ($16/person) to the dinner price ($26/person). I wouldn't be opposed to paying that price if the establishment was clean and there was a better selection overall. We tried to settle on just ordering a roll from the menu to share, but none of the specialty rolls that were on the conveyor were on the menu to be ordered individually. Overall, I'm thankful we hadn't decided to just go for it and try a bite, because we ended up deciding to go elsewhere. Was absolutely disappointed. I had family come in from out of town that I hadn't seen in a while and decided to go to sushi train. I love this place and am typically there once a week. But on this occasion, I wanted to get the dinner and my family wanted to get the lunch and they wouldn't allow us and I had to sit at a different table because I got the dinner price and the waitress called. I always enjoy my time at sushi train! If it's your first time going, i recommend going at dinner time. When you go at dinner it's a flat rate and you can eat anything you want. If you eat at lunch you'll have to be careful because red plates are extra (it's their more expensive sushi options) There are signs at the tables that explain the pricing and everything. The staff also explains everything too if it's your first time there. They don't hide anything from you, just read the sign or ask your waiter/ waitress! The sushi is tasty and i've never had issues with anything tasting bad or not being fresh. If you don't want to get sushi from the "train" you can order the sushi rolls you want fresh off the menu provided (no additional charge). If you don't like sushi, you can also order hibachi and appetizers (again at no additional cost) Overall, it's a fun experience and you get the most bang for your buck coming here. read more

I'll have to admit that the reviews made me nervous, but my friend loves Sushi Train so I decided to give it a go on my last trip. I was pleasantly surprised! We went around 8 and were seated right away, though there were a fair amount of people in the restaurant. The lobby and the table/chairs were clean and well kept as well. The sushi on the conveyer is definitely above grocery store quality, but not as nice as you would get from a made to order restaurant. Between four of us we sampled almost every roll and no one regretted their grabs off of the belt! You can also order hibachi, appetizers, and soups off of the all you can eat menu (included in the price) and they were all average but tasty as well. The bathrooms were a bit dirty, so they could definitely work on that. All in all I would go back to Sushi Train! We enjoyed our meal for a very nice price of $24.99 per person, which is a great deal for all you can eat sushi. I've only been to two sushi trains before and this was the better of the two. There was a LOT of food choices and desserts and it was all you can eat which meant that I could try several things. All were good. Crazy girl was my favorite along with the Chinese donuts. The waitress, Judy, was prompt and very helpful. I couldn't have asked for more in a server. The restaurant is older and in a shopping center area but a stand alone building. No worries there. The tables were set up so that six people could sit around a table easily and have the two closest reach in whenever needed. We had very few options and would have to wait several minutes for anything to come up. Then, once we found a plate we like, it would be red when it came back around, and would be an additional $5 for literally 2 tiny bites. After seeing that my bill was almost 70 bucks and my entire family was leaving hungry, I very politely asked for some sort of discount as we barely ate anything due to this. If your goal is to savor the best sushi you've ever tasted in a fancy setting then skip this place. However if your goal is to have fun with friends/family* and stuff your face with as much sushi as you can eat, you've come to the right place. The service is very straightforward, after seating you are only checked on occasionally to see if you want to order extra from the included menu and to clear empty plates. Otherwise they stay out of your way so you can focus on the previously mentioned face stuffing. They know exactly what they're doing and are very to the point which is perfect for the atmosphere. Overall this is one of the next sushi places I've been to that I visit again and again. Whether from the train or the menu everything here is a fantastic deal for the price. I love this place! It is so fun seeing the different sushis coming out on the conveyor belt, deciding if you want to grab it. The lunch is cheap, of course there is an up-charge for the red plates, but if it looks good then grab it, I'm sure you won't be disappointed! The green tea cheesecake is on a red plate but was 100% worth the extra couple bucks. I debated grabbing a second plate because it was so good! Is it 10/10 sushi? Of course not, but the experience is fun and the sushi is good for the affordable prices. This is a fun place to come on a date, or with a small group of friends. Our first visit here. There was a lot of variety and the idea is really fun! It reminded me of the floating ducks that you pick up as they go by at the carnival! This place was so disappointing. We've been to a number of Japanese/sushi places where you pay for all you can eat or pay by the plate and this was a weird combo. The problem is no one explained it to us when we arrived. Our waitress got our drinks then disappeared for 30 minutes. We grabbed a couple plates off the conveyor for my ten year old (who would have to pay the $25 adult price for AYCE) thinking we could pay by the plate since he was so hungry. When the waitress finally came back (my husband had to flag her down) they made a big deal about it since they have switched from pay by plate to AYCE recently. They eventually agreed to let me pay for his plates, but they made a big scene talking about it and embarrassed us. The food itself was just not that great and the plexiglass around the conveyor was dirty. I'm certain we will not be back again. $70+ for my family of three with this low level of service and quality was not worth it. read more
