Absolutely ruined my stomach, worst "general chicken" I've ever had. For the low price of 6 bucks you can TANK your internal organs for the next 6 hours, and uncontrollably clog every toilet in the GENERAL vicinity. Nothing else like this in Muncie, IN. Quite familiar with Asian cuisine (primarily szechuan & thai) making authentic Tom Yum, Kung Pao chicken and other dishes at home. Used to live in Indy and enjoyed Asia Mart immensely... thank God we have something serviceable here now in Muncie! Got right in and took the last table available. Service was lightening quick, yet you could tell the food was made to order. Had the egg drop & hot and sour soups, pork/cabbage dumplings, kung pao chicken, and yu shiang pork w/ hot peppers. Yu Shiang Pork was out of this world good... made a point to tell the waiter to make it crazy spicy and they did! Tons of Tien Tsin peppers, vegs & meat prepped perfectly, balanced flavors with the heat with sweet/sour/ginger background flavors. Wood ear mushrooms included, legit dish. It was an enormous amount that included rice, and my starving self ate every bit of it, although a normal person would have two good sized meals from it. Soups were good, probably mix but solid. Kung Pao chicken is Americanized, but that's to the fault of my dining companion! I'm sure they could make a more authentic version, but it was unique for an Americanized version that set it apart from nearby establishments. Pork dumplings were excellent... incredibly rich flavors and the dipping sauce was fresh. Staff was incredibly pleasant and worked hard to make everyone happy. This is some of the best Chinese food I've had. The dishes seem to be made with high quality ingredients and they offer both Americanized Chinese dishes, and more authentic choices. This place is the real deal. This isn't your typical small town "Chinese" restaurant. This stuff is LEGIT. They have a very large menu with hundreds of items. It took me a long while to decide what to order, since there were so many items. Many of them I had never seen at a Chinese restaurant in Indiana before. They have all the parts of the animal, not just the average chunks of chicken breast, or whatever. They have lamb and all sorts of tripe and other interesting meats, as well as noodle and rice dishes and seafood, and obviously DUMPLINGS, which are the real deal. I am a big fan of the dumpling house and the attached Asian grocery. It is shocking that something like this exists in Muncie - not just your regular college town terrible Chinese food. Many of the items on the menu are much more traditionally Chinese than you will find in your average place, and the dumplings are not to be missed. We get takeout from here regularly, and it never disappoints! The grocery store is very well stocked with all sorts of items that you can't find in an American grocery store. We ordered two entrées and an appetizer of Crab Rangoon to split. Honestly, Crab Rangoon is one of my ideal favorite dishes when visiting any asian restaurant and the ones I had here were not too bad! The real impression stuck with me from the quality fresh ingredients and depth of flavor in the hot soups and broth that were provided with our meal. Let me start by saying this: when I heard this place was in the back of an Asian market, that pretty much convinced me I had to go. The best places are always sort of hidden. In terms of food, Dumpling House did not not disappoint at all. I tried the pork and cabbage dumplings, and sesame chicken (I know, I know, a very Americanized Chinese dish). The pan-fried dumplings were unlike any I had ever had. They had a savory flavor that went very well with the dumpling sauce. The sesame chicken was just average. I wasn't expecting amazing when I ordered that. I will definitely be back, and will probably order one of their more authentic dishes (as well as more dumplings). I spent a summer in China and miss real Chinese food terribly. I was thrilled to finally find a place to get authentic Chinese food in Indiana, and in my hometown no less. I understand the difficulty of trying to figure out what to get, but give it a try. The owners' teenage son is usually working and has a little better English. Talk to him and he can help you find something you'll definitely like. I recommend the shredded pork dish if you like spicy. The Dragon Eggplant is actually my favorite but it's very garlicky and you may not like the mushy texture of eggplant. Everything was below average! The soup was thick..not what I'm used to. Dumplings were small and dry. The sauce was great though! The rice was awful. They don't give you enough sauce for your sweet and sour. So you just basically eating dry chicken. The dumplings don't taste very good, in fact they're kind of bland. Sorry folks, I was expecting some decent Sichuan Chinese cooking. Having lived in Sichuan for several years, I was expecting something authentic. I loved that the place was filled with Chinese, that's a good sign, but their forte is northern Chinese food. Nice dumplings, but the spicy chicken was bu hao and the fu gi fei pian was sweet! How could you?!? And the slices were chucks of organ meat, they need to be razor thin. No ma la taste either. Perhaps a trip to Sichuan or Chong Qing can fix that. read more
