went there last night. this is my third or fourth time, but I will never go back. Paid the bill and asked for a receipt. When I got home I checked it. there was an extra charge for having the dumplings "steamed", although the menu clearly said steamed or fried... Your choice. Also ordered a teriyaki chicken bowl, which comes with your choice of any number of items like rice, Ramen, noodles, etc. they also charged extra for the noodles, even though that was a free choice on the menu, called the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager, Viveth, who was there but couldn't come to the phone. The lady said, "oh we raised our prices". Nowhere on the menu was there any mention about price increases. Bottom line, I don't like being ripped off like that and will never go back. besides, Parking is a real issue in that area. read more

My husband and I have been going to Dumpling Do Jo for years. We started going to Tina Louise in Carlstadt, but when the restaurant burned down we were told that Tina sold her business to Mr. De Fino, a carpenter who hit the jackpot when he opened "Small Plates, big Bowls" (or visa versa). The food was awesome, as well as the staff. Chrissy, Aldonna, and Jennifer (Chrissy's mom) made our night entertaining. By word of mouth the restaurant became more and more popular. We went on a Saturday night and was told we would have to wait an hour for a table. Some people think that's not bad, but at our age, we decided to go somewhere else. We were so disappointed about the wait, so we stopped going there for awhile. My husband and I decided to go later so we would beat the dinner crowd. We arrived at 8:36 and was told they stopped serving at 8:30. For customers that were established patrons I was shocked that they wouldn't make an exception. WE'RE TALKING 6 MINUTES HERE!!! That was the last straw for us! As much as we love their food, the mentality of the staff has changed and we wouldn't get that welcoming, homey feeling like we did when Jennifer, Chrissy and Aldonna were there. I really wanted to like the food here more than I did. It was definitely okay, but it didn't blow me or anybody I was with away. We all said that it was decent but we probably won't be in any rush to return. First, the ambiance is really cool! However, the table that we chose - while it looks really cool - wasn't super practical. It curved in, making it difficult to get 100% comfortable eating. Our waitress was very nice and memorized (almost!) our entire order without writing anything down. We got a couple little plates to split amongst the three of us: Chicken lettuce wraps: Definitely a good portion, comes with peanut dipping sauce that was really tasty. Tangerine beef: large portion! Crispy and sweet. Roasted Peking duck: I really liked this. It was very flavorful, but be careful about the bones! Soup dumplings: Personally, I think these were the best things ordered. Steamed Asian broccoli: Good, and even better with the peanut dipping sauce from the chicken. Pork belly buns: Oof, the biggest disappointment. This was honestly one of the reasons we came here, we were really craving pork belly buns. None of us liked them. They were all fat with no flavor. Szechuan wontons: I didn't have these because I'm not a fan of spicy food, but my two friends who shared them said they were their favorite dish. It was love at first sight. We stepped inside to ask for quarters for the parking meter. We were immediately greeted with a burst of positive and friendly energy from who I would soon discover was Jennifer. We grabbed our change ready to leave. Jen said, "why not eat here?" I have visited this phenomenal establishment at least 5 times within the first month. I am a foodie and a cook as well. I'm not easily impressed by everything; I'm truly a critic. But let me tell you, the meals and apps I've had has been AMAZING. From the General Tao, short ribs, Lo-Mein, fried rice, ravioli, dumplings, buns, and my favorite; spicy seafood ramen. I still have NO idea what was inside. I definitely would not get these again. Edamame was good, I mean how can you go wrong? General Tsaos chicken with ramen on the side. Now I was a little confused ordering it but it was literally just that, a bowl of ramen and chicken on the side. The chicken was really crisp and delicious. I would try that again as well. Ramen completely fell short. I liked the concept of the egg being cooked and then fried to have the crispy skin. Other than that, everything was bland. The broth was not good. There was French onion in it? Which got super soggy right away. The noodles were ehhh, literally. Overall if it's bad broth it's bad ramen. I might go back to try the seafood ramen since the reviews aren't bad on that but this plain ramen was just not good. Skip it. It wasn't a bad visit, the buns and the general tsaos were really good. Just don't come here and expect some good authentic dumplings. Another thing I thought was weird, we didn't really get a spoon for the ramen so I was eating it with chopsticks and a metal spoon. Recently they added vinyl signage to their front window so passersby can more easily find them. We frequent here on Saturdays to take advantage of the small plate specials. We have tried their huge bowls of ramen as well, but tend to order them more frequently in the cooler months. The spicy seafood ramen is my fave! Little plates of dumplings, wontons, bao buns, lettuce wraps, steamed clams, fried pork belly, mushrooms, and the crispiest general Tso's I have even eaten! There is much more to choose from, but these are our top picks. Don't let the "little" deter you as these plates are loaded! Easy to order by checking off what you want on their paper menu. Self serve sauces and pitchers of ice water with fresh lemon and lime slices readily available to you at the counter. Definitely a hipster like place, but we love the intimacy of this small joint. For a meal that is delicious, relatively inexpensive (especially for its high quality and detailed attention to prep), and which gives you the tapas-type option to try many things in one sitting at a BYOB -- I just don't know HOW you can beat BBLP's!!! I won't go into the details of my (our) last meal there because I have probably had everything on their menu over the years AND IT'S ALL (VERY VERY) GOOD! The little plates are ALL extremely tasty without being too salty, and the big bowls are the same (with that vast variety of options). Honestly one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Was looking for a good ramen place and the pictures looked so good on google so we decided to check it out. The staff is super friendly, the place looks like a forest dream, and the food is absolutely incredible. The bowls even come in little tree barks!!! My family loves this restaurant! I used to not like this place but after visiting again for the first time in months, I feel like the food has gotten really good! I can only assume they have a new chef or something, because the menu is the exact same but the actual food is so much better. I was already starving by the time some of the first few plates came, so I wasn't able to photograph everything we ordered but I'll review then anyway. Peking and Sichuan wontons (not pictured): really good and flavorful. Not as greasy as they used to be, and they are perfectly bite-sized. I ordered the Sichuan wontons and my cousin ordered the Peking. The Sichuan one was the perfect amount of spice for me, but the rest of my family actually liked the Peking one better. Fried pork belly: AMAZING, the star of the table. The little bite-sized pieces of pork belly were so crispy and crunchy that you could hear the person next to you taking a bite. They weren't greasy at all even though they're fried -- really top notch. General Tso's chicken: again, amazing. The chicken was actually still really crispy even though it was covered in sauce. It has a hint of spice that's not immediately present, but it builds. This is a really good dish, and better than most other General Tso's chicken you'll get at other Chinese-American takeout places. Krispy Kreme shrimp: I really wanted to try this because I'm so familiar with this dish since it's a staple my boyfriend makes, and it did not disappoint. My boyfriend is Chinese and has been eating this dish all his life and so started making his own at home. The dish they have here at Big Bowls Little plates actually comes pretty close. The shrimp was also FRESH and crispy. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is that the sauce was a little too sweet. But this dish was really good and I highly recommend it. Asian broccoli: what's an Asian restaurant without this dish? This was really flavorful and perfectly steamed. No complaints. Gotta eat those veggies! Fried rice: I didn't have any but my aunt said it was really nice and flavorful. Not to greasy either. 8-Grain Rice: I got this because I had no clue what it was but wanted some rice in my dinner. It is a really deep purple-ish, brown-ish color, but don't let that put you off. It's pretty good if you want something other than white or fried rice. Scallion pie (aka scallion pancakes): This was a little underwhelming from what I'm used to, only because I didn't find it as flavorful as ones I've made at home. It probably needed a bit more salt or oil. It's still pretty good though once you dip it in the plum sauce. I wish the servings were a little bigger (because the food is so good), but I guess that's why it's called Big Bowls Little Plates! After a few months of rejecting my family's offers of coming back to this restaurant, I think I'll actually be here more often now. I also have to say that I've tried the other location in Secaucus and the food in this location is miles better. The restaurant is pretty small though, so if you come here at dinnertime on a weekend, you run the risk of having to wait a bit for a table. read more

The lo mein was very salty and the sauce didn't taste like teriyaki. Funny story about this spot. We came here a few years ago, enjoyed it, but for some reason, forgot about it. Well we're glad we finally remembered to come back as this has become one of favorite places. First thing you notice besides the fun, cozy ambiance, is the friendly and attentive staff. lead by Chrissy, who is just so nice and truly makes you feel at home here. Now for the food, which in a word is "delicious". The name says it all, Big Bowls, which we had filled with beef short ribs braised in a French onion broth, amazing. Loaded with fall apart and melt in your mouth meat. As for the Small Plates, we have tried many and loved them all. Some of our faves are the Szechuan Steamed Wontons filled with pork belly and scallions, the Steamed Soup Dumplings with pork, the Crispy Creme Shrimp, glazed crispy jumbo shrimp, the Tangerine Beef, crispy flank steak in a tangy citrus sauce, the Scallion Pie, chopped scallions rolled in dumpling dough and served with plum sauce, the steamed clams served in garlic butter, beer and herbs and the General Taos Chicken, chicken breast meat served with a spicy honey coating. You can't lose trying any of these. Another thing we love about this spot is there is so many different dishes and combination of dishes to try that it's a new adventure every time you come here. Last night I ordered the Short Rib French Onion ramen through Uber Eats. Everything was packaged perfectly although I would have preferred a ramen soup spoon instead of a regular spoon. I was really impressed by the flavor and tenderness of the short rib. The broth and noodles were excellent as well. I didn't love the crisp on the outside of the egg. Was it fried after boiling? Been a while but I went back to this small little Jewel and they are knocking it out of the box as snoop says errr dm day. I had the Taos Shrimp and shrimp pan fried dumplings. OMG , Im not sure but these are regular dishes you can get at many American Asian cuisine restaurants. But they take it too another level, the Tao shrimp were pan fried with a lite coating over a vegetable fried rice out of this world that had sautéed mushrooms. I did not have to add any sauce and ate the dish as it was to my enjoyment and immense satisfaction. The shrimp dumplings little crispy and packed did I say packed with minced shrimp. The sauce for the dumplings just highlighted the overall flavor. I must go back, its pricy and the parking is limited, but it is WORTH IT. read more

So, I stopped by recently when Rutherford was having a car show along Park Avenue and I must say, I understand some of the previous reviews regarding the service here. I must have gotten lucky the 1st time I dined here since it wasn't packed at the time and didn't experience all the problems stated by other reviewers. Now I know! So one of the main problems here is the ordering system they have in place. You walk in, grab a paper menu, pencil in your order, and then hand it to the person behind the counter. Here's the problem(s) with this: 1. It's like being at a crowded bar trying to order a drink when there is only 1 bartender. If there is more than a few people ordering at the same time, they all crowd around the "bar" and the person taking the menu to enter has no idea who is next since there isn't any kind of line in place. 2. The person behind the counter is highly dependent upon the customer(s) filling out their order on the menu legibly. The menu of customer ahead of me looked like chicken scratch so the person behind the counter took over 15 minutes trying to decipher his writing and basically had the customer reiterate the entire order. 3. I'm sure this was a good idea in their heads when they came up with it, maybe cut the cost of having multiple waiters/waitresses walking to the tables and taking the orders and instead, just have the customer write it down and then submit their orders. The problem here is, if there is multiple guests arriving, there is still only one person taking the orders and typing them into the one terminal they hae for the kitchen to start preparing food and to bill the customer. read more
