I didn't absolutely love everything I ordered however I'd be interested in trying different things from the menu before making my ultimate decision. We ordered the duck bao buns and I was not a fan. The duck was tough and mostly contained fat. I did really like the shrimp dumplings as did my young daughters. Best thing I ordered were the udon noodles. They were delicious. Absolutely blown away. I had to pick my husband up at the train. We stopped in and immediately were impressed at the menu. So many options! The food was OUTSTANDING. Glad I decided to dine in at this Big Bowls Little Plates. I use to frequent at the Secaucus location but the Rutherford spot is hands down much better! This is the first place I've dined in; during the pandemic that actually offered hand sanitizer at the table. Which I appreciated because I always have one handy. I was very impressed and it was clean and spacious enough inside. For my appetizer, I had the very savory steamed shrimp dumplings. You can taste the flavor of the butter, scallion, and ginger with every...single...bite! Omg! Mmm! Placed an order for delivery and the delivery person sent a slightly sassy text after I had come down to pick up the food which she said was an accident haha. Anyway, all of the food was very bland and the dumplings and buns weren't tasty. They put mushrooms in their fried rice in the general taos chicken bowl which isn't mentioned on their menu. The sauce used on the steamed pork dumplings was bitter and greasy making the dumplings soggy. We have ordered a few times from Dumpling Dojo. This time, we were a bit disappointed, as our order was totally messed up. My husband just got back from a business trip in China, and of all things, gave in to us wanting Ramen! Go figure. Delicious Asian fusion restaurant with options your build your own meal. Lots of little plate options from dumplings, buns, apps and more. The duck buns and pork belly buns were both delicious and perfect for sharing. The French onion short rib ramen was deceivingly large - the short rib was a huge hunk of meat half hidden by the broth. The broth was rich and full of flavor, something I always require with my ramen. I liked most of the toppings, especially the crispy onions. The egg was slightly overcooked (no longer runny) and wasn't a fan of the bamboo shoots which were bland and thought they were bok choy stems (not the pickled ones you normally see). We ended up having leftover ramen, and they separated the broth from the ingredients to avoid overly soggy noodles. For dessert, we tried the oreo cheesecake wontons which came with fresh berries and whipped cream. Tasty sweet bites to share with friends to finish the meal. My first time here. Was really looking forward to it when I read about the dumplings. I am a dumpling fanatic. I ordered the steamed pork dumplings and the General Taos chicken plate. First the good...the chicken was amazing!! Perfectly done. So crispy. I couldn't help but eat every little chunk on the plate. The sauce was sweet and tangy. A real delight!!! I would come for the dish alone. Now the not so good (at least for me). As I said I love a good pork dumpling with a nice tangy gingery sauce and this was the reason for coming. But I was disappointed when the dumplings came out swimming in some kind of a thick sauce...like a gravy. I have never seen that before and was not expecting it. The sauce overpowered the dumpling and couldn't even taste the dipping sauce. Was disappointing because I wasn't even able to appreciate the dumpling. My family and I came here on a Friday night at 6pm and there was no wait. They take reservations. There's an electronic menu to scan when you sit down. The staff is so friendly, huge shoutout to PJ for the customer service!! It was our first time and he explained all the dishes to us and took the time to keep checking in to make sure everything tasted great! For the big plates, you can order the meal and then your base (rice, lomein, fried rice, ramen, etc) We ordered the below with our ratings: 1) Szechuan Fried Wontons - 5/5, we DEVOURED this dish!! It's a little appetizer with six wonton and has peanut sauce drizzled on top. YUM 2) Short Rib French Onion with Lomein base- 5/5 for the short rib, 3.5/5 for the lomein. The short rib was so tender and they put crunchy onions on top. It was amazing. However, I wish I paired this with the ramen base instead. The lomein was more like a saucy udon noodle, different from your typical takeout style egg noodle. 3) General Tso Chicken on the side of a Pork Ramen base- 5/5 for ramen, 2/5 for chicken. We saw raving reviews of the general tso but it just was not authentic at all from what we are use to. The pork ramen was great though! 4) Spicy Seafood Ramen- 3.8/5 it was definitely spicy and had a lot of seafood. I wish it had more noodle and real crab instead of imitation! 5) Oreo Cheesecake Wontons - 4/5 It's a deep fried wonton with Oreo inside and a cheesecake drizzle. Super different from anything I've tried. It came with whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries! WOW if you made it to the end of this, KUDOS. The noodles even tasted fresh. The egg had been soft boiled yet fried (?) So it had a bit of texture on the egg white. That was different. Glad we did! Szechuan dumplings were delicious and I loved the peanut sauce it came in but could've used a tad more. It was deliciously paired. The Krispy Kreme shrimp were drowned in a thick syrupy sauce and I could not tolerate it at all but my daughter loved it. She wanted the recipe for the sauce lol Eh- to each it's own, right?! Right. I ordered the oreo cheesecake wontons out of pure curiosity. Did not regret. It was so good. Sweet but not cloyingly sweet. Paired with chopped fresh fruit and lightly sauced. I was looking for a place to grab lunch around the area and here, I decided to try this place out. The restaurant doesn't have its own parking lot, so be prepared to look for street parking. The door entrance is not wheelchair accessible because of the few steps at the entrance. We have a stroller with us, which requires some work to get inside. Let's talk about the food now. Honestly, only worth my one time try. Food LOOKS good but taste uhhh nothing special. Szechuan wonton vs Shanghai wonton...I choose Shanghai wonton but it ain't yummy enough for me to eat that again. The wonton skin isn't smooth and silky enough. Pork belly bun vs Short rib bun...definitely the pork belly bun. Now this would be something I wouldn't mind ordering again. That pork belly bun was not like other places, one big slice of pork belly. This place actually have that pork belly shredded and pieces. The sauce of that pork belly bun was pretty flavoring too. The short rib bun, on the other hand, was really uhhh. The short rib was really dry and tasteless. Next, the Short rib french onion bowl with ramen was nothing special. The short rib in that order was a good portion, but not tender enough. The soup base was not authentic enough. Now with the kids meal chicken cutlet bowl. The chicken cutlet was thin and hard! My husband and I needed extra time to bite and chew that up, nevermind my 5yo. I just gave her the lo mein, which isn't really lo mein like Chinese restaurants but actually stir fried udon. And yes again, so so. No where near a good stir fried udon I have eaten before. Overall, only worth trying out of all those is the pork belly bun. (Period) read more

This is my second time back and I plan on going again. The sauce on the steamed dumplings is so flavorful. The General Tso dumplings pan fried are my favorite. The soup dumplings are bite size pieces of heaven. I'm a sucker for a good lemonade and they have one. Just the right amount of tang and sweet. The best part was the dessert dumplings. My favorites are the general taos chicken (best ever - tasty sauce, extra crispy, quality chicken) and any dish with the short rib (very tender). The menu also had a list of items and we were so full from everything that we had, we didn't get to try dessert. This is an interesting little place that's quite enjoyable for a casual dinner. Love the small plates and fair pricing which allows you to try many items. For the most part everything we've tried has been good. There's a few quirks like lo mein listed on the menu but it's actual udon noodles and flavor of the ramen broth is definitely underdeveloped. But honestly for the fair pricing charged it works out! Fried rice is really good, it's definitely more on the wet side but the flavors and mix ins like mushrooms worked really well and compliment the beef/chicken nicely. Also all the chickens that are fried like taos and sesame are soo crispy and good! I preferred the dumplings over the wontons but both were good! I personally think this spot does a good job of offering "Asian fusion" by mixing traditional dishes with some more Americanized presentations. I had happened to be at Bolero Snort Brewery in Carlstadt and me and my friend were starving. When we got there was very little seating due to Covid but we were seated immediately.
