Stirred fried rice cake. Overcooked rice cakes with zero flavor. Needed some salt

Wow what a disappointing experience. Thought we'd give this location a try because we loved the Ellicott city location. This location is not up to par. Dumpling district is inside the kung fu tea, and you order at a kiosk on the left when you walk in. First and foremost. The soup dumplings were disappointing. As the Ellicott city location has some of our favorite soup dumplings, the ones here were just not good. We got mala and soup dumplings. The mala had ZERO mala flavor. No spice, no peppercorn flavor. At least half of the dumplings were broken (some soup leaked out), though most still at least had a little soup inside, but the soup was just too sweet. The pork soup dumplings had a thicker skin than the mala. None were broken, and the soup was, again, too sweet. The soup for both were also just lukewarm - we are in the store immediately after it came out, so no it wasn't because we took it home to eat. We got the fu qi fei pian (spicy beef tendon and tripe slices) which we loved the spicy flavor and the portion size in the Ellicott City location. Here, the tendon & tripe were very tender and slightly tangy, but again the theme today seems to be not spicy & too sweet. It was just the slightest bit spicy, without much numbing peppercorn flavor/spice. Also the portion size was TINY for $16. Not worth it at all. The stir fried rice cake may have been the most disappointing. It looked brown and flavorful, but wow was it the most plain and flavorless thing we ate. It seemed like they forgot to season. It wasn't even sweet, and there was 0 salt and despite it looking brown from soy sauce there wasn't any salt/soy sauce flavor. The rice cakes themselves were also way overcooked to the point of being mushy instead of chewy. Husbby and I can and have made better rice cakes at home than this. We don't think they make their soup dumplings in house - our theory is that the Ellicott city location makes soup dumplings (you can literally watch them make them) and they must get it frozen / shipped to this location, but I just can't understand why the flavor is overly sweet and not even spicy. The complete opposite of what we remember the Ellicott city location had. Mala was some of our favorite with the numbing mala flavor. We will have to try the Ellicott city location again to see if overall quality has gone down, but for sure we will not come back to this Laurel location. We were full but so disappointed and unsatisfied. We wanted some hearty hot soup dumplings, but we just got lukewarm overly sweet/ flavorless food.

The rice cakes and the salty sticky rice roll are pretty good. My wife was craving the chicken and broccoli w/ brown sauce. I was not a fan of this dish. The broccoli tasted bitter and the chicken seemed low quality. I wouldn't get this dish again. The noodles with scallion sauce was good. The noodles stuck together and the scallions in the dish were bitter, but the taste was decent. I can't fully score a place based on delivery, but if you're in the mood for Shanghainese cuisine, this place isn't a bad option.

There's plenty of parking in the lot just outside from the restaurant. Seats around 20 mostly at tables for four, with probably 20 more tables in the attached tea-house next door. We arrived in the early afternoon on a Friday, and there were only two or three other full tables. We ordered from a touch-screen by the register at the back counter. Food was served in take-out containers, and looked fabulous. We asked for plates, and collected up our chopsticks and forks and sauces and napkins by the register. We got the 6-variety "rainbow" soup dumplings, a sticky-rice roll, and a cucumber salad. We got a soda, and it would have been easy to get tea from the attached next-door tea-house. Salad was fresh and flavorful and generous with a bright cilantro dressing. Every dumpling was hot and juicy and tender, with good flavor. We felt that fillings were good, but not extraordinary. The "crab and pork" and "truffles and pork" dumplings were predominantly pork. The sticky-rice roll was dense and lightly flavored, nice with soy and vinegar sauce. And there's more appetizers and cantonese-style dishes available. This place is ultra-casual, almost fast-food in style, and better than fast-food in food flavor and quality.

We ordered brisket pho, pork and soup dumplings, and pork pot stickers (dim sum). Food came out piping hot, as it was cooked. Pho was decent. Meat a little dry but not chewy. Too many onions not enough meat though. Pan fried pork dumplings were excellent. Almost like a soup dumpling, with how juicy they are inside. However the pork has grisly bits that couldn't be chewed so that's a star off despite the taste. The soup dumplings had sufficient juice. Not overflowing like, but good enough (saw some complaints about that). The pork soup dumplings had an unusual somewhat sweet broth that wasn't my favorite. Bubble tea we got half sweet, but kids would have preferred full sweet (half sweet wasn't sweet enough they said). Overall would come back for the chicken soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings.

Even with delivery, these maintained their dumpling skin integrity and didn't leak in transit. I'd argue that the skin is a little thick, but I was really impressed by the filling flavors. Because it was delivered, it was not as hot as it probably would be in store - the soup broth was still brothy but a little more thick than it would be if they were hotter. - Shrimp and zucchini - very delicate, light flavor. - Black truffle - oh yum! Really flavorful, rich, and delicious. - Pork and crab meat - woot! This is so tasty! This feels like the traditional soup dumpling. Excellent. - Chicken - if you love a good chicken soup, this is for you. It's got a tiny kick of spice at the end as well. - Pork - I was not enamored of this one. It was...fine...but didn't have the depth of flavors of the others I tried. - Mala - I didn't really taste the mouth-numbing, tingly spice these were supposed to bring, which didn't stop them from being good. I'd probably order the black truffle and the crab and pork again. These definitely hit the spot for a dumpling craving.

We came on a Friday night, and had to wait about 30 minutes for seating. The dining area is basically wooden chairs and tables. Not much ambiance, but that's not why you come here. We ordered scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, eggplant with basil, and noodles with chicken. I never had scallion pancakes. Nothing I would order again. I have nothing to compare, but I assume they're good. The dumplings were fantastic. The eggplant, which comes in three varieties, appeared to be a popular item with other guests. I guess it was good. I'm not a fan of saucy food. The noodles were fantastic. I feel like we ordered wrong, although my girlfriend picked everything except the noodles. This is not a place to visit if you're looking to lose weight. The hard sugar in the eggplant alone was more than I consume in two months. I'm probably not in the best position to rate our dinner as I avoid carbs and sugar. If I were to come back, I'd stick the noodles and revisit the menu to see if there is a solid chicken option. I came here hungry and left hungry as the food was not filling, and the sugar content sent my system into a bit of a shock. Nonetheless, if this cuisine is your thing, you won't be disappointed.

I can't comment on the service or ambiance as this food was delivered. The portions were large. I was taken a back since the lo mein and eggplant were lunch portions, and usually you can expect a small serving, but not at this restaurant. Also, the lunch entrees came with a side of soup, which made this an even better deal (both were $13.95). While the food was delivered hot and packaged well, some of the items were great, and some fell flat due to texture issues. I really like the fried crab wontons, lo mein, and hot and sour soup. They hit the spot. I didn't enjoy the Hunan shrimp as the shrimp didn't taste fresh and had an odd texture to it. The eggplant also was overcooked so was somewhat a sloppy, dough like consistency when eating, which was kind of off putting. If returning, I would opt for the lo mein and soup.

I'd recommend avoiding the Shanghai crispy noodles with seafood. It's pretty large, and the amount of seafood you get vs the amount of noodles is a little lopsided. I came because I heard someone rave about the vegetarian dumplings --they were solid. Quite large and filled with mushrooms, onions, green vegetables and seasoning. I ordered the veggie buns as well, but it's the same filling as the dumplings so no need to order both. I enjoyed both. I also ordered the kung pao tofu which was okay. Some of the tofu pieces were fried too hard and made it difficult to chew. The flavor was spot on. I would return and possibly try a different tofu dish, but it appears that they are better with the meat dishes so I'm not sure if it's the most comfortable option for vegetarians. Nevertheless, I liked my experience overall.

The dining area is one room, from what I could see, but very clean. You can see the kitchen where there are stacks of steamer baskets used for the soup basket. Some table had printed drinks menu but we got a handwritten one. All the menus are laminated and you're given a whiteboard marker to mark what you would like to order. We ordered some appetizers/snacks along with soup dumplings and the crispy coconut shrimp balls. Shortly after ordering, the side dishes and appetizers appeared. The dough sticks were a simple beige food for the child who happily munched on it. It's a fried dough sticks that didn't seem too greasy. Each half can still break into two smaller sticks for smaller bites. Traditionally it's paired with soy milk but we had already ordered a lot of food. The cucumber garlic salad was crispy, flavorful, and slightly sweet. Little threads of carrot added a bit of textural difference and color. The garlic provided a small bite without overpowering the fish. It's a kid-friendly dish as long as they are okay with cilantro! This is a must order. The scallion pancake with beef with also a huge hit. It's crispy and flaky (but not crumbly) and it's served with slices of beef, what appeared to be some sweet sauce (hoisin maybe?) and thinly shredded scallions. It was similar to Peking Duck but with a scallion pancake and beef instead of the thin pancake and duck. The thinly shredded scallions add a bit of a kick and freshness that counteracts the oil from the scallion pancake. The coconut-crispy shrimp balls were a huge hit. This dish was whole, headless, fried shrimp tossed in a sweet sauce then dusted with shredded coconut, served with some slices of pineapple. It reminded us a bit of mayo-shrimp dishes but with coconut. An order of the chicken soup dumplings were placed just because most of the soup dumplings contain pork. It was recommended over the other non pork shrimp and zucchini dumplings. They don't seem very hot until you get your first big bite. Took a nibble, drank some of the broth, and then with a bigger bite realized there was still more broth! Ginger, soy sauce, and chili crisp/oil is available on the table, but the juicy soup dumplings were perfect on their own. The steamer of rainbow dumplings was also quickly devoured with the black truffle (pork), mala spicy pork, and shrimp/zucchini being the favorites. Each soup dumplings had its own unique taste. Upon hearing the shrimp/zucchini was liked because it was refreshing, an order of those were also placed. Once they arrived, I had to agree they were very good. They have a different taste and texture and even though I thought the chicken was good, I found myself quickly devouring the steaming soup dumplings. While we ate, our drinks were constantly refilled and we were asked if we needed anything, even ginger slices. With the clean, prompt, service that comes along with delicious foods, we're bound to come back to try the other foods!
