Friendly staff, but even better food. It seems that when you move to NJ, you realize you miss a lot of things that you had access to in NYC and one of them we missed when we moved was soup dumplings! It's tough to find soup dumpling/Shanghainese restaurants in NJ, unless you're in predominantly Asian neighborhoods so thank goodness for Dumpling Den! Unfortunately, Dumpling Den is located on Main St. in Fort Lee, so parking is a luxury in the area. However, if you come at the right time (a little bit earlier than prime times), then you might luck out. We dropped in on a Friday evening at around 5:30pm and, shockingly, the restaurant was relatively quiet throughout our meal. Although they seemed to have decent takeout business, dine in was pretty quiet. The menu is pretty typical of most Shanghainese-style restaurants and contains a vast array of favorites like fried buns, fried rice dishes, rice cakes, noodle soups...and, of course, soup dumplings. We ended up ordering some pretty common dishes that you would find at most Shanghainese/Cantonese restaurants and let's just say they really filled our craving. We put in an order for Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings, Pork Soup Dumplings, Gluten Kao Fu, a Beef Pan Fried Noodle and a Braised Beef Brisket Noodle Soup. Everything was RIGHT ON POINT. The soup dumplings were delicious. The soup in the dumplings cooled a bit when we dug in, but it was still really good. The Kao Fu is a staple for us whenever we go to Shanghainese restaurants and that was solid. As for the Braised Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, myyy goodness, the beef brisket was so tender and tasty. I've been to many, many, many, many Cantonese and Shanghainese restaurants in my day and this was some of the best beef brisket we ever had in a noodle soup, bar none. As for the Beef Pan Fried Noodle, I'm a big-time pan fried noodle snob, so I'm super critical of this dish when it's not made right, meaning the noodles are not super crispy and the sauce isn't thick and flavorful. Dumpling Den passed the test with flying colors and more! I cannot believe I'm about to state this, but it's one of the best....yes, best, pan fried noodles I ever had! The noodles were fried to crispy perfection and the sauce was piping hot and smoking like a chimney. The sauce was so hot that even after 15 minutes it felt like it just came off the wok still. There was also ample beef, bok choy and broccoli in there too. Dumpling Den definitely deserves more applause for how good their food is. Don't let the empty seats fool you when passing by because this Fort Lee establishment is a real winner and if you want a really, really, really good meal that won't cost an arm and a leg, drop in. This an ordinary Shanghainese place IMO, with okay food, wonderful interior, and very friendly service. We returned to DD first time since we tried after it had opened. It feels they have changed the look of the store and the menu little bit. Food wise, I didn't find any of their dishes beyond okay. The scallion pancake is deep fried, so its hard. The dumplings are dry and don't come with any dipping sauce. The Yangzhou fried rice was also on dry side. The garlic sauce eggplant came with chunky pieces, it would have nicer if they were smaller softer, that would have mixed well with the sauce. My friends and I came here after 6 hours of hiking that was supposed to take 4 hours but that's a story for another time. Dumpling den is situated in Fort Lee which is an area known for its exemplary food options. We got the pork soup dumplings and the crab and pork soup dumplings. The mapo tofu is quite spicy, so beware. Service was quick and kind. The place is clean. My, oh my. Seriously some of the tastiest food I've had in a while. After some hiking in the area I convinced my boyfriend to stop for dinner since we were right next to Fort Lee. I quickly pulled up Yelp and looked under my bookmarks. Dumpling Den was right there and with an easy online ordering system. Parking is tough but I was luckily just picking up. The restaurant's interior is very cute, lots of seating. My order was ready as soon as I got there. I have to say their pricing is very reasonable too. For around 40 bucks I left with a huge bag of goodies. Let's start with the dumplings. These little pillowy clouds of goodness. The house dumplings were overstuffed with meat and absolutely delicious. The crab and pork soup dumplings stole the show for me. Truly some of the tastiest dumplings I've ever had. The skin was perfectly chewy, the soup was delicious and the crab was spot on. The sauce was the perfectly accompaniment to this dish. Absolutely delectable. The veggie buns were perfectly fluffy and super flavorful for being only veggie. I loved these. My boyfriend got the pork belly rice platter and enjoyed it. I got the rice cakes with chicken and it may have just crawled up to my top two favorite dishes. The sauce on this meal was just awesome, mouthwatering. A great place for dumplings and authentic Chinese food! The pork and crab soup dumplings were high quality, and the sticky rice and bacon shumai was a bit unique and tasty! Also, the seafood pan fried noodles (particularly the noodles themselves) were really good, though the seafood could have been a little more plentiful. The braised saucy pork bun was another great option. I have to say, the scallion pancakes were not very good though. The sesame balls for dessert are good and not too sweet like at some other places. The food is mostly decent with a few exceptions being overly salty for my taste. The xaiolongbo (soup dumplings) are best enjoyed fresh. They don't travel well and will stick to each other yielding a soupy mess when try to separate them. I like their steamed dumplings, the pork and the shrimp are really delicious. They offer lunch specials on weekdays that gets you Chinese bento with soup for only $12. Lots of options to choose from and the staff is always great. If you order ahead and tell them when you will be picking up, it's always ready when you arrive. They are also on the usual delivery apps if you want to get it brought you too. This place offers take out and some indoor dining, maybe just 2-3 tables at a time are still open. Unfortunately we didn't have a great experience yesterday. I was craving beef noodle soup and yelp'd for somewhere close. The beef was alright and pretty tender, however the noodles were just the wrong noodles. They are the very thin, ramen-like noodles(?) but cooked harder than al dente, which made it really hard for it to soak in any flavor or soup. I always wanted to try this place so finally decided to check it out. First impression was the decor - it's a bit of a dive, kinda like a take-out place with a few tables. No problem since I'm here for the food which, for me, is more important. The next thing I noticed was that the prices are higher and the portions are noticeably less than regular restaurants in the area serving the same cuisine. When the food was served, I was somewhat surprised that it was served on paper plates, plastic disposable containers with plastic cups. The food quality was definitely well below that of its full service restaurant competitors but with higher prices. I don't know how they charge as much as they do for below average quality while serving it to customers on paper plates and disposable plastic containers. At least I didn't have to throw out the used plates and cups myself. I do not recommend this place. There are other places nearby that have better quality food, nicer atmosphere, and cost less. I rarely leave reviews. I've been told I'm a very nice guy, and I sincerely wish I could say something nice about this place. Usually, if a few entrees taste yucky, surely the scallion pancakes, cream cheese wontons, heck, even the soy sauce might be pretty good. But damn, dude. This place had my wife and I feeling so gross during and after our meal (a majority of which we threw in the trash). $110 for barely seasoned tightly packed meat in a thick rubbery tasteless dough... The chicken soup dumplings, typically our favorite dish, tasted like a 3rd rate frozen dinner, and, to boot, not served with the usual vinegar and grated ginger. The fried rice reminded me of prison food from the 1980s. The scallion pancakes were super thick, more like bread, instead of the flakey multilayered pancake it's supposed to be. I was excited about trying veggie dumplings and buns, but that was arguably the most disappointing-- it looked, smelled and tasted like poor quality frozen spinach that was minced and cooked with zero seasoning...I think I may have gotten notes of freezer burn as well, like it was just pulled out of an old dirty microwave after being frozen for a decade plus. Everything felt lazily thrown together. We now feel ill, nauseous with headaches, no exaggeration. This place is a sick joke and it's shameful that enough uncultured sheeples exist in the world to give this place an absurd 4 star rating. We should have stuck with our go-to spot, Soup Dumplings Plus, a half a mile down the road. I'd give them -1 stars if I could for ruining our night. May God have mercy on their soul. read more

The high reviews deceived me- they seem to be definitely based mainly on their dumplings. The vegan soup dumplings are a must avoid- & honestly, they should seriously rework the recipe as it tasted milky & sour with an unidentifiable filling. Otherwise, take it off the menu entirely! To their name's credit, the other soup dumplings we ordered (pork & crab, shrimp har gow) were genuinely tasty. However, the bacon & sticky rice shumai was a greasy little ball of plain & unseasoned brown rice- no bacon to be tasted. Once again, a must avoid as their efforts to save money causes them to not give up a single strip of bacon between three dumplings. Moving on to the entrees- very underwhelming & disappointing overall as the noodle soups we ordered (braised beef + five flavor beef) tasted like they were made only using hot water & instant flavoring packets. The braised beef chunks themselves were tasty, but everything else was lacking flavor. Their braised fish is the same situation- too much water diluting the szchuan spice packet they used to make it. I took it home to try and save it with my own home seasonings since I hate to waste food. Abalone rice is a skip as well, they gave 3 pieces over rice with a fried egg for $18 . Fried eggs seem to be a theme here- they also came atop the noodle soups, which was a bit odd for us. They offer a choice of egg noodles or rice noodles, and we ordered one of each, but they must have run out the night we went- we were given two variations of rice noodles instead with no explanation. We go here two to three times per month. Our favorites are the Braised Pork Belly with Egg, Mapo Tofu, and Lion's Head. We also love the cucumber salad and the woodcear mushrooms salad. How have I never been here until today....im SHOCKED. Their soup dumplings are probably the best ive had in this area. The soup is so flavorful and so so savory. The chive and pork dumplings were made to perfection and the ratio was chefs kiss. I also tried dan dan noodles for the first time and the slight spice made it so delicious. The braised beef with rice was also extremely tender and was not dry at all. The only thing I would not recommend were the braised pork buns. Who's excited for another addition of soup dumplings in fort lee??? Me!!! I must say the employees working here were very nice and attentive. This isn't like a restaurant dine in but more like open cafeteria food court style. You're free to sit wherever when you walk in and you'll be given a pamphlet of the menu and a pen to make your selection. We got the pork and crab soup dumplings, pork chive dumplings and dried shrimp cheung fun. On to the food review.... If I were completely honest, I wasn't over the moon with their soup dumplings. I don't know what exactly they put, but it over powered the the crab flavor. So normally the crab soup dumpling would be my favorite but not in this case. And they added sauce over their shrimp cheung fun (which doesn't normally happen) and peanuts. I wasn't thrilled because I'm allergic to that. They didn't make any notes that there were peanuts on this dish so be wary! Pork chive dumplings were pretty good, you can tell it's not processed meat and this one had a heavy soy sauce flavor. My husband and I originally wanted to go to Soup Dumpling Plus but remembered this little place a few weeks ago, so we decided to give it a shot. It was pretty empty when we got here on a Saturday night around 8pm..it was a little confusing because we really didn't know if this was a wait service or if we ordered and then take a seat..we walked in and got seated by what seemed to be the owner. He bought us a menu with a pen to check off whatever we wanted. The menu isn't as extensive, but it had what we came here to try- and this was the soup dumplings. Throughout the wait, I looked around to see how people ordered and it seems the right way to order was at the register and pick a seat..or you order and wait for the take out. We ordered two pork soup dumplings, an order of pork and chive 'pan fried' dumplings, and the pork belly rice. I said 'pan fried' dumplings in quotes because it came out steamed, so that was a little bit disappointing. We also ordered scallion pancakes that never came, which was ok because we were stuffed. We also ordered general Tso chicken that wasn't available because they ran out of chicken for the night. Then there was the HK style Churn Fun that we wanted which they ran out of as well..so needless to say we didn't get everything we wanted... Food: did the trick but didn't exactly taste amazing. The pork dumpling wraps were a little bit harder compared to some that I've tried. The soup in the dumplings lacked flavor..broth was a bit bland which was disappointing. When I say the wrap itself was a little hard, I don't mean it as a crunchy kinda hard..but kind of an old wrap hard- if that makes any sense. The pork and chive pan fried dumplings were similar. Lacked flavor and the skin of the dumpling didn't seem as fresh. The pork belly rice was pretty good. A little boring looking, but the pork belly was ok...meat was a little over cooked, didn't melt in my mouth like I was hoping. Rice was plain white rice with a little bok Choy. This was probably the better dish out of everything we ordered. All the dishes came out on paper bowls with plates and utensils on the side by the bar seating. There is free water but there's other drink options as well. I think I'd come back and try the other things that weren't available to see how the rest of the menu is. read more

We were VERY happy with our delivery order this week! We went with the dumplings sampler, crab and pork shrimp dumplings, red bean buns, sautéed eggplant and salt and pepper chicken. Everything was fabulous and reasonably priced! The dumplings sampler was VERY tasty. Perfect little mix of everything. My boyfriend LOVED the crab and pork shrimp dumplings - very pleased. I loved the red bean buns, but that's definitely an acquired taste! The sautéed eggplant was a clear favorite for the both of us. The salt and pepper chicken was good - but I think it needed some sauce - so we added some spicy mayo to it. Nonetheless, we were craving dumplings, and this place hit the nail on the head! read more

Very friendly staff and class food, love their dumplings, pancakes, and chicken with broccoli. Will visit again in the near future!
