Chicken with garlic sauce lunch special!
    Stefan H.

Based on my last review, looks like it's been 4 years since I've been to China Taste, and boy was my food different this time! Giving them 3 stars this time around, thinking maybe they had a bad day! Food was really 2 stars. I'll go back again for a lunch special, but if it's anything like the food I got today, I won't be going back! Got a large chicken with broccoli and a large beef with mixed vegetables. Both were incredibly oily and salt was the overriding flavor! You can see the oil shine in the pictures. Looks very different from the chicken with broccoli picture posted by another reviewer 27 days ago. Paid like $28.50 for the two dishes, wasn't even worth half that! Will update my review once I give them another try. Hopefully it was just an off day because the food has been very good in the past!

Top left - Small beef chow Fun, Top right - General Tso's Chicken, Bottom - shrimp with Shrimp W. Garlic Sauce

In the mood for some Chinese take out and ordered some staples to compare. Ordered from their lunch menu so the portions are relatively smaller. Price was fair. The lunch menu are not the typical "combo" of egg rolls and soda and there was also no "coupons" so if you are looking for a deal - this is strictly just for food. The shrimp and garlic sauce over fried rice was decent flavored and had a generous amount of 4 large shrimp so very proportionate to their vegetables. The general tsaos tasted like utilized their "sweet and sour chicken" and added the sauce to make it general tsao (typical for most places to pre fry their mest for both dishes but this had a sweet and sour flavor instead of general tsao. Their beef chow fun sizing is size "small" that could use a little more seasoning like salt. For a Chinese take out place; it's about average what you get around the Leonia area. I'll go with the shrimp and garlic sauce as their better dishes out of the 3.

This particular sub-genre…read moreis close to my heart, and whenever I asked friends and acquaintances about where I could find a decent bowl of those unctuous, slippery black bean noodles (called jjajangmyun), most listed Hong Ban Jang close to the tops of their lists. The jjajangmyun here are great. It's a hearty serving and a rich sauce with bits of vegetables and pork. Don't get confused when they plop a scissor next to your bowl - it's to cut the noodles down to size so they're easier to eat. At most Chinese-Korean restaurants, they've smartened up to the power of a mix-and-match menu. Hong Ban Jang has quite a few on the menu, noted in fun Korean portmanteaus like bokjjangmyun (half fried rice, half black bean noodles) or tang jjang myun (half sweet and sour fried pork, half noodles). These are served in clever divided bowls and a good way to get a good portion of two hits. Speaking of hits, my family and I tried two - the aforementioned tang soo yuk, or sweet and sour fried pork, is incredible here. Hot, crispy, and big chunks of meat (as opposed to other restaurants which shall not be named, who have shaved costs by deep frying paper thin bits of pork). It's served with a sweet sauce that has chunks of fruits (peaches? pineapples? We couldn't decide which, but it was delicious). Good as these were, I loved the lajogi even more. These are translated 'stir-fried chicken in hot sauce' on the menu, and they're deep fried nuggets of chicken, covered in a zingy, pepper-studded spicy sauce. My family and I came on a late Saturday lunch hour and things were hopping in here. Every table was full and there was a bit of a wait (admittedly, we were also a larger party so it took some time to mash tables together). The servers know how to keep up with such rush; even when there seems to be way more tables and customers than staff, they're somehow always there when you need something.

The dry pot here is similar to others, where you serve yourself from a raw bar, the ingredients are weighed, and they cook it for you to the spice level of your liking. I don't like that noodles are charged separately from the weight of the other ingredients (vegetables, fish cakes, meat, etc.) Because of this, i almost opted to order one of the dakgalbi dishes on the menu for Hong Chun Cheon. However, the prices listed on the menu are for one serving. When i tried to order, the lady at the counter explained I had to order two order minimum. So the real price for one order of cheese dakgalbi is $51.90, not $25.95. This was annoying because I was the only person who wanted dakgalbi, which mean i ended up not getting it. I did get my dry pot though. They make it spicy just like everyone else. At about $16 per pound with separate charges for noodles, it's slightly more expensive than other dry pot restaurants in the area. I eventually wanna come back for the dakgalbi, but I'm gonna need to make sure i have a partner beforehand.

There aren't too many options but still ample to make a delicious mala dish. I got the Malatang with the Medium level which was the best for me, although I was sniffling a bit towards the end. I think Mild is also a great option, as it was still flavorful with a slight heat. We had a bit of a wait on Friday night as expected but luckily, upon being seated it's just a matter of waiting for the kitchen to prepare your dish. They offered us complimentary sweet potato tempura on the house which helped curb our hunger in the meantime. There are only three people working front of house so please be patient!

The dining room was empty when we rocked up on a weekday late afternoon, and it was nice to sit at a table by the window for a street view. I love how theirs comes with loads of veggies, even as I question the use of green beans which is a first for me (to see them in sweet and sour pork). And while it was distracting and would rather have the dish without the beans, the star of the fish, the pork, was just right and we gobbled it up. I hope they stay open for a long time.
