Prices are up but the steak quality is down. Arrived at 4:30 and didn't get out until 7:00. Not the old Dukes

The other day my wife was speaking with a friend of hers, and the friend pointed out that Duke's was a good restaurant. Now, mind you it's been years and years since my wife and I had gone to Duke's, but based on that recommendation, we took a fresh look at it. As an aside, neither my wife, nor I can remember why we hadn't been back, and at the end of the day we felt like this was one of the best meals we've had in the valley or in Carson City in recent memory. We arrived early and enjoyed a cocktail at the bar with Alec. He was friendly and knowledgeable and, with us, patient as we talked about cocktails, a friend we had in common, and the Pappy Van Winkle they had on the shelf behind him. It was right below the Louis the 13th. Let me just say that the Frey Ranch bourbon old-fashioned he made us was delicious. We were seated on time and greeted by a very professional server named Alex. He was assisted by a busser named Kristin. They worked very well together, and we were constantly refreshed with water, bread and drinks. The environment was very pleasing. There were no TV screens, loud noise or music, and the room was spacious. The patrons were nicely distanced from each other. They have established a true old school steakhouse environment. The menu had items that allowed everybody something they could enjoy. Steak was the star of the show, but there was a nice variety of seafood and chicken that was also available. As a group we enjoyed a filet mignon with Berna sauce, the house special that night, which was in New York steak with blue cheese, chicken, Cordon Bleu, and a piece of cod. For appetizers, we had chosen a shrimp cocktail and escargot. Both looked and tasted exceptional. It was at this point that we ordered our first extra basket of bread as I wanted to enjoy every bit of the buttery garlic, and blue cheese escargot drippings that I could. To summarize, I would be remiss without commending the chefs as the food was presented beautifully and tasted every bit as good as it looked. The staff that we bumped into was very positive and friendly. So if you're in the Carson City or Carson Valley know that this is well worth your careful consideration when considering a fine dining experience if you're in the market for a steakhouse. Tomorrow is our 25th wedding Anniversary. We have always had great meals and experiences here. Our waiter was Alex whom we have had several times now. We'll get back to this! Today's soup special with your meal was potatoes and ham. OMG delicious. I could have eaten this for my meal. Hubby subbed a wedge salad for his mixed greens salad. No mention from the waiter of it going to be full price either, vs a subbed item!! Hubby ordered the 6oz filet medium (cooked perfect) with a loaded baked potato. that was good. Green beans and 2 pieces of carrot for the veg. Not really upscale veggies and the green beans were very tough. I ordered the Chilean sea bass. I wanted to get the creamed spinach, but he told me it would be full price. Ok no biggie so I opted for the house veggies that come with it. Now for my potato option, I wanted the mascarpone mashed potatoes, no mention of the fact it would be full price!! Don't understand why as he mentioned it about the creamed spinach. Same as he did not mention the wedge would be full price. My meal was great except for the fact, there was about 1/2 the sauce as it had last year. So the fish was dry once the sauce was gone. Over 1/2 of the fish was without, but this cup of mascarpone mash was not worth the 8.00 they charged for it. Now here is the other problem. A really nice couple sat across from our table. I am guessing our waiter knew them for great tips etc as they were very very friendly. He boxed their meals for them. Not us, a bus helper by the name of Azul, super super sweet and helpful since our waiter was mostly absent. He stopped and talked to them often. So as this is happening, we are left waiter-less. We had to call him several times to get things we needed with our meal and a forgot to order, order of mushrooms. He came by 1 time after our food was delivered to bring us our Anniversary desert, (a good 15 to 20 minutes) after our to go bags sat on the table for a good 10 minutes. He dropped it and took off. Now the couple by us he definitely knew.. They came in after us and left before us by a good 10 minutes each way!. I hate this as we have been coming here for a good 4-5 years now. 1 or 2 times a year. Fixed incomes here. After we finally received our check, we were charged full price for both the wedge salad and the mascarpone potatoes. Well here went our great night. Hubby called for the manager, and he removed those charges as we were not made aware of them 1st off. Manager was also told, wait staff should inform of any full charge. Now this little electric pay crap was handed to us to pay the bill. Ummm I do not work here, nor should I with what we are being charged. Not sure if a tip was left or not as I was totally confused on it, and once again, waiter was not there to help us. Pretty sure, we will not be back!!! My first experience with Duke steakhouse was around the time they first opened, were they overpriced? Yes, was the meal worth it? No not by a mile, in fact, it was so bad that it took me all this time to give them a second chance. Let me start by saying that they still get a five star review even though my wife steak ordered as medium rare came out raw, in this situation it couldn't have happened more perfect because my wife didn't want steak. I wanted her steak to go for the next day! So raw means reheat to proper temperature WIN! Our server was amazing. He even tried to help me convince my wife that I did in fact need the extra dessert that she didn't let me get anyway. My steak beautifully prepared, but it's not just about the steak is it, it's about the whole plate. Many places screw up either the starch or the veggie Dukes did not the veggies were so tender so good oh so good, my baked potato. It is exactly how I like it. I don't know how even working in many years as I did, I do not know how they do that. How do they get the potato to that texture? Amazing! This review didn't start with it but my meal did... The lobster bisque fantastic that puff pastry was puffed like Cheech and nothing like daddy! It stood up in tall, wasn't running around with baby oil cause underneath it was hot so hot and creamy perfect lobster bisque so good maybe if a freak off left people feeling the way I felt, puff daddy may not be the red headed stepchild getting beat on by 50 Cent! Will I be back most definitely will I be back a lot unfortunately, I don't make that kind of money! Those that know me know that this statement I'm about to say is kind of important, when I first experienced Duke, I was with my father. One last weekend up at Tahoe for the end of summer and I got invited to come to a dinner here at Duke's steakhouse inside the Casino Fandango here in Carson City. It's an old school steakhouse that serves appetizers like oysters Rockefeller, and beef Wellington. They also do tableside preps like a Spinach Salad and some flaming dessert. My friend was disappointed that his fave server wasn't working that night. One thing I thought was unusual was the menus ..... the physical menus ... they were on backlit tablets! I guess before there were complaints that it was so dark in here, the senior citizens had to bring flashlights to read the menu! It is pretty dark in here! We started with the oysters Rockefeller. It was OK, but my friend who had these before, thought the oysters got a lot smaller now. I did think there wasn't much to each one to slip into my mouth. The bread served was not as good as before, it was just a small portion on standard sourdough, not the scrumptious bread that was served last time. It was kind of a junkie basket of bread for a high end place. The flaming tableside spinach salad was next, that was spectacular and super tasty. My entree was the 16 oz Ribeye and my friend had the Filet Mignon. He thought his filet wasn't as good as last time and sad to say, this supposed prime grade ribeye was cook properly as ordered, but the meat was just tougher and needed more chewing than a high end steak should. I could tell it wasn't that tender as I made my first cut with the knife. The Bearnaise sauce was god awful! Who made this? Overall, there were some good things, like the spinach salad, but my friend thought that the experience wasn't near as good as it once was. The service was just perfunctory, you know, just get the job done ... not a very personally engaging experience like you should get at a high end place. This isn't the coffee shop! Love this place. Best steaks around. Attentive service. Free dessert on your birthday, but bananas foster or cherries jubilee are extra but worth it. Dukes for Mother's Day brunch was poor at best. The food was subpar. The bacon was all super greasy and just barely done. The French toast soufflé had no flavor at all. The NY steak was thin, dry and tough. Mashed potatoes were flavorless and cold. Their fruit assortment was melon that wasn't very ripe. For Dukes, I expected much better. For the small assortment they offered, NOTHING was decent. I'm truly disappointed. The service was awful. We had to ask for water 3 times and you'd think with a mimosa ordered, they'd ask if you'd like another, instead of multiple people passing by my empty glass at the edge of the table. I wanted to celebrate a birthday and called to make a reservation. None of my multiple calls were answered during working hours, during non-working hours. Nothing but crickets except for the recorded message stating to press one for reservations. I finally called another restaurant at CF and she offered to check Duke's reservation book. She mentioned it didn't look full but to come when they open just in case. Sure enough we arrived at 4:10 and was told they were full. The restaurant was relatively empty. I sat "relatively" since I couldn't see the entire room. The manager told me I should have gone online for Open Table. Nowhere did I read on Yelp or hear on their phone message to make reservations on Open Table . Nobody really seemed to care. Not even the manager. read more

This is a small, classy restaurant inside the casino fandango. We went on a week night and it was very quiet. The waiter's attitude was curt, but he did a good job with everything. Reasonable prices on wine. There is no sommelier. We had a pretty good Merlot. Excellent bread basket! Warm fresh baked sourdough and unique biscuits served with a square of pink salted butter! Delicious Appetizers: The lobster bisque was very different. Reminded me of minestrone, good flavor. Had a good amount of meat. The baked crust on top was outstanding! Mini beef Wellington. Two small steak pockets. Very nice appetizer. Main: The steak Diane was prepared table side by the waiter, and unfortunately it wasn't very good. Fun to watch, but the steak slice is incredibly thin and the sauce is thin and not very tasty. The baked potato side is perfectly cooked. Very good with all the fixings. Dessert: the mocha cheesecake. The cheesecake bottom is decent-good thick texture. I didn't like the cake top at all. Texture was not good for me and it had the flavor of a grocery store cake. So... service was great, ambiance, great. The place had a strong start. Broccoli soup was good and then the food came out... Food was so plan and had very little flavor. Seabass was wrapped in parchment and cooked to perfection, had a nice flake to it and still moist but it was like they forgot to season it, it had no flavor. I got the Cabernet braised short ribs, it wasn't a short rib, it was a cut from a Pot roast or a rump roast & it was not a Cabernet reduction. It was an apple cider vinegar based barbecue sauce would be the best way to explain it. I was really excited to try this place but man it was not worth the money. First, such a lovely room and our waiter Allen, just a wonderful, friendly pro! Perfect service in every way!!! Having to walk through smoky casino leaves a lot to be desired, so come in from the side entrance and avoid the riffraff. My daughter had the 16 oz prime ribeye steak, medium rare, loaded baked potato, a house salad and warm, fresh brown bread with Himalayan salt. She also had a lemon drop martini that she said was absolutely sublime. I had the braised short rib with mashed potatoes and their delicious creamy potato soup. I was the DD but I'll note that they'll bring you a perfectly poured Guinness if you're not! I love places with the good taste and sense to pour the world's greatest beer! I indulged in the fresh, warm sourdough. SO DELICIOUS! We split crème brûle for dessert. The only course we actually finished (you have to keep your priorities in order) The food is first rate. I was very close to ordering their special, a crusted Chilean sea bass that looked and smelled incredible. If I had any input for their chef...I could do without the little taste of booze in every course. Just my preference. I like clean, simple flavors and with fresh ingredients this good, those old school additions just aren't necessary. Dinner wasn't cheap but we had a fabulous dinner and the total was $141. Took my wife to Dukes Steakhouse for her birthday. We last dined there last August for our anniversary. I ordered the special, a boneless rib eye (came with a bone). With out a doubt, the worst steak I have ever had. The steak was full of fat and gristle. The steak knife fought to cut through it as my plate slide around the table. Of the 16oz of steak, I probably left 13oz on the plate. The baked patatoe was so full of sour cream, that was all I could taste. After leaving, we ran into a couple we know who live local and with whom we have dined with there at Dukes in the past. Told them of the horrible meal and they said that they no longer eat there as it has gotten so bad. What happened Dukes? Will not be returning. read more

A Solid 4 Star (Plus) Experience. Gayle and I don't dine out often and almost never inside a Casino. And we're not big red meat steak people either. Yet, here we were (with another couple) last night at Duke's. The only negative is having to walk through the Fandango Casino to get here, bright lights, stale cigarette smoke and all. But once here, we were in our own spacious dimly lit, dark woods, and leather seating alcove. From initial seating to our farewells, service was attentive, friendly, and professional. Low ambient noise allowed for what turned out to be a few hours of great and comfortable conversation as the evening progressed. We almost closed the place down. 3 of us ordered a small Filet Mignon (Oscar Style) and the other the Grilled Sea Bass special. Any of those choices came with either potato leek soup (with bacon) or a nice side salad. Gayle and I also had a baked potato with shared fixings on the side. Steaks were ordered medium rare, medium, and medium well, of which we all thought were cooked as we asked. Of course there was wine (by the glass) and an occasional cocktail. We have eaten here several times in the past and found the food and service to be exceptional. However the service was terribly slow once our food arrived as our,waiter Alex had far to many tables to attend too. We were extreamley disappointed by this, since we were entertaining guest from out of town. So much that we couldn't consider staying any longer for desert, coffee, or anything else. We went to Dukes recently for a birthday celebration. It was our first time there so we had a reservation. The decor inside is beautiful and I really like the booths! We started with some oysters and Caesar salads. The oysters were delicious. The Caesar was good, but I felt it was a bit under dressed. I had the short ribs, the portion was enormous! Although they were tasty, it wasn't quite mouth watering, I like it to almost melt in your mouth. I'm somewhat a short rib snob so it was still very good. For dessert we were gifted a creme brûlée with our waiter solo signing happy birthday, very nice touch! I ordered a banana torte which I was way too full to eat, but I can assure you tasted delicious 2 days later when I did eat it. Overall the service was top notch. This is the second review in a year, we had hoped things would change. The martini was perfect, seating was on time. Received the greeting, water, bread, and ordering was great! We waited at least 30 minutes for salads, which were dry, took us about 10 minutes to get salad dressing. The entrees were an additional 30-35 minutes, maybe longer...my husbands, the special, swordfish, had no taste. I had the smaller cut prime rib, ordered medium rare, got rare, I wasn't going to send it back, because the amount of time to get it was horrible. First off, this place is not open every night. We tried eating here on a Tuesday night and it was closed, but we came back the following night and got in. We did not have reservations and it was fine as there were plenty of empty tables. We had good service throughout our meal. The soup of the day was a bacon cheddar potato soup and it was so delicious! I could have just ate that for dinner, but I also got the 6oz filet which was good. While I was visiting my children in Northern Nevada, I decided to host a Christmas dinner for them at Dukes steakhouse in Carson City located inside the Fandango casino. We really enjoyed the atmosphere inside of Dukes when we sat down. The waiters were very attentive to ensure we were comfortable and fill us in on all the many menu favorites. The highlight of the evening was ordering the steak Diane, and watching how the chef prepared it at our table. All the entries were delicious and served in the right proportions. We drive to Carson City every now and again to come here to Duke's Steakhouse located inside Casino Fandango. The only bummer for us is the short walk through a smoke filled casino to get to the front of the restaurant; once inside, no more cigarette stench. The inside is decorated nicely with lots of model sail boats and a really neat set of chandeliers that reflect off the decorative tin ceiling panels. This is a nice dinner for a date, birthday, anniversary or other celebration and the service is always on point. Our previous menu favorite was always the Chateaubriand for two, but they've since taken it off the menu and now supposedly only offer it for occasional specials. Their lobster bisque is also notable and served en croute with tons of lobster claw meat. If you have any room left after a huge meal, the dessert cart always has something to attract the sweet tooth. Hope you enjoy! read more

Went to Reno for a bonding trip with my sisters. I normally choose a 4 star+ yelp review before I decide to try the restaurant but glad I did. Food: lobster appetizer special- this was really, really good. I highly recommend this. Spinach salad- this has a dramatic presentation with fire and everything but taste was ok. I would not order this again. Oyster rockefeller- this was also delicious but would try the grilled oyster next time. Lobster bisque- excellent French onion soup - love how the cheese just melts in the soup Sea bass- so moist and flavorful Salmon- Crispy on the outside but succulent and well seasoned in the inside Rib eye- My sister chose well done which I would not prefer but it was still good Service: WOW! 5 stars all the way. Kudos to our waiter, Ron. He paced our food perfectly. He was a great waiter, very professional with a good sense of humor. He was kind, patient and definitely an expert regarding the menu food items. Ask for Ron! Also I think Adrian was helping out. He was excellent as well. Our server was very attentive and as we were a party of 9 that included 3 children, we were thankful for his help. The front hostess initially turned us away stating they couldn't accommodate a party of that size but relatively quickly thereafter, she came back stating they would push a few tables together to make it happen. The food was tasty, my fish was excellent cooked without the sauce due to a dairy allergy, but the vegetables had a bit more butter than I would prefer or want, especially for a healthier option being steamed vegetables. My lemon drop martini drink was a bit sour but still drank it as it was good-- just not great, and the dessert presentation both for the available options as well as when ordering the bananas foster was absolutely phenomenal!!! Also, it should be mentioned that the manager of the restaurant came over part of the way through our visit to check in as he was leaving for the evening and wanted to make sure everything was going OK. Spent a couple nights in Carson City next to Casino Fandango. Over Thanksgiving, not much was open past 5pm. But Duke's was! They offered a select menu, including a Thanksgiving meal. Duke's Steakhouse sits inside Casino Fandango. It is the gem of the casino. It doesn't fit in, but it does in away. When you walk towards it, it's almost like a mirage. You feel the vibe change as you move closer to it. You're moving to a change in scenery. We arrived with no reservations in hopes to get an early dinner. The hostess let us know unless there was something at the bar, she couldn't take reservations until much later. Unfortunately, there were not any seats together at the bar for us to sit at. The hostess was kind enough to ask the bartender if we could sit at a bar top. Thankfully he said yes. Dan, the bartender, greeted us amongst his business at the bar. Duke's was jamming with locals who were all saying their hellos/goodbyes. Assorted bread, including pretzel bread was brought. All the while any staff member who hadn't seen us yet, said hello and Happy Thanksgiving. We felt warm and welcomed from everyone. We ordered both a 6oz filet (medium), baked potato and veggies. Outside one of the steaks being a little bit more overcooked than asked, the steaks were flavorful and delicious. The baked potato was lightly salted. The veggies consisted of one broccolini and one small carrot. Dan checked on us often as his crowd began to dwindle at the bar. Very personable and friendly. I see why lots of the customers that sat at the bar were so friendly with him. Thanks to Duke's for being open on turkey day, Dan for being awesome and for the hostess (I didn't catch her name) for being so sweet and trying to get us a table to eat. I love this place! Food is always consistent. Sadly, I cannot give 5 stars because they fired Dan, the bartender, who's been an icon there for years. He was the main reason we went there! A good man who was devoted to Duke's. He carries a following like no other bartender because of his skill and kind heart towards others. Duke's will never be the same so I suggest whatever the hierarchy of BS ended his career there so abruptly, may the powers that be do their damndest to get him back!!!!!!!! read more

4/17/2022 Easter Sunday Decided to make reservations for Easter Buffet yesterday, but they were full. Added to the waitlist and in 4th place. Received a call this morning and good to stop by before 1 pm. Perfect timing, gives enough time to build up an appetite.. All of the out of town people are in town, so it was a must to be someplace quiet and quaint! Dukes did not disappoint. Organized, with some really good dishes, and service was spot on!
