    spinach salad
    Robbie R.

One last weekend up at Tahoe for the end of summer and I got invited to come to a dinner here at Duke's steakhouse inside the Casino Fandango here in Carson City. It's an old school steakhouse that serves appetizers like oysters Rockefeller, and beef Wellington. They also do tableside preps like a Spinach Salad and some flaming dessert. My friend was disappointed that his fave server wasn't working that night. One thing I thought was unusual was the menus ..... the physical menus ... they were on backlit tablets! I guess before there were complaints that it was so dark in here, the senior citizens had to bring flashlights to read the menu! It is pretty dark in here! We started with the oysters Rockefeller. It was OK, but my friend who had these before, thought the oysters got a lot smaller now. I did think there wasn't much to each one to slip into my mouth. The bread served was not as good as before, it was just a small portion on standard sourdough, not the scrumptious bread that was served last time. It was kind of a junkie basket of bread for a high end place. The flaming tableside spinach salad was next, that was spectacular and super tasty. My entree was the 16 oz Ribeye and my friend had the Filet Mignon. He thought his filet wasn't as good as last time and sad to say, this supposed prime grade ribeye was cook properly as ordered, but the meat was just tougher and needed more chewing than a high end steak should. I could tell it wasn't that tender as I made my first cut with the knife. The Bearnaise sauce was god awful! Who made this? Overall, there were some good things, like the spinach salad, but my friend thought that the experience wasn't near as good as it once was. The service was just perfunctory, you know, just get the job done ... not a very personally engaging experience like you should get at a high end place. This isn't the coffee shop! So, with the general experience just not as good as it was and the smaller oysters .... we'll pass on this place next time.

Our server was Alex and he was great. The ambiance is very nice, quiet and the lighting was perfect. the ham and potato soup was really good, and our filets were a good MR. We didn't have time for dessert but they all looked fabulous. We'll be back soon!

    Lobster bisque, beef Wellington

This is a small, classy restaurant inside the casino fandango. We went on a week night and it was very quiet. The waiter's attitude was curt, but he did a good job with everything. Reasonable prices on wine. There is no sommelier. We had a pretty good Merlot. Excellent bread basket! Warm fresh baked sourdough and unique biscuits served with a square of pink salted butter! Delicious Appetizers: The lobster bisque was very different. Reminded me of minestrone, good flavor. Had a good amount of meat. The baked crust on top was outstanding! Mini beef Wellington. Two small steak pockets. Very nice appetizer. Main: The steak Diane was prepared table side by the waiter, and unfortunately it wasn't very good. Fun to watch, but the steak slice is incredibly thin and the sauce is thin and not very tasty. The baked potato side is perfectly cooked. Very good with all the fixings. Dessert: the mocha cheesecake. The cheesecake bottom is decent-good thick texture. I didn't like the cake top at all. Texture was not good for me and it had the flavor of a grocery store cake. So, disappointed in our choices for entree and dessert, but appetizers and wine were great.

Rump roast with bbq sauce NOT a Cabernet braised short rib.

So... service was great, ambiance, great. The place had a strong start. Broccoli soup was good and then the food came out... Food was so plan and had very little flavor. Seabass was wrapped in parchment and cooked to perfection, had a nice flake to it and still moist but it was like they forgot to season it, it had no flavor. I got the Cabernet braised short ribs, it wasn't a short rib, it was a cut from a Pot roast or a rump roast & it was not a Cabernet reduction. It was an apple cider vinegar based barbecue sauce would be the best way to explain it. I was really excited to try this place but man it was not worth the money. Wine list was as expected for this type of restaurant not great but they had a decent Justin by the glass.

    there's soup in there

Lobster Bisque is outstanding. Lots of real lobster in it and the big domed pasty shell is delightful and so tasty! The spinach salad great made table side. Gone are the half off appetizers at the Carson location, I think they have them in Sparks, but not worth the drive.

Prime ribeye and loaded baked potato, fresh veggies and lemon drop martini

First, such a lovely room and our waiter Allen, just a wonderful, friendly pro! Perfect service in every way!!! Having to walk through smoky casino leaves a lot to be desired, so come in from the side entrance and avoid the riffraff. My daughter had the 16 oz prime ribeye steak, medium rare, loaded baked potato, a house salad and warm, fresh brown bread with Himalayan salt. She also had a lemon drop martini that she said was absolutely sublime. I had the braised short rib with mashed potatoes and their delicious creamy potato soup. I was the DD but I'll note that they'll bring you a perfectly poured Guinness if you're not! I love places with the good taste and sense to pour the world's greatest beer! I indulged in the fresh, warm sourdough. SO DELICIOUS! We split crème brûle for dessert. The only course we actually finished (you have to keep your priorities in order) The food is first rate. I was very close to ordering their special, a crusted Chilean sea bass that looked and smelled incredible. If I had any input for their chef...I could do without the little taste of booze in every course. Just my preference. I like clean, simple flavors and with fresh ingredients this good, those old school additions just aren't necessary. Dinner wasn't cheap but we had a fabulous dinner and the total was $141. It's a wonderful place for a celebration or just a splurge and you can certainly eat there for much less if you choose one of their filet dinner specials. You'll get plenty even with the 6 oz.

Prices are up but the steak quality is down. Arrived at 4:30 and didn't get out until 7:00. Not the old Dukes

My friend suggest we meet at the Sage Cafe for lunch, located inside the Carson Tahoe Hospital. I've been here before, and liked it, so I wasn't surprised at wanting to have lunch at a hospital! He said they opened the wok stir fry station that was closed for a long time. He said it was really good and you get to make up you own wok fry my just checking off on a list of ingredients of what you want. We meet up there, you just have to sign in at the front desk as you enter first. The inside looks same as it always did, open and clean. We go over to the stir fry station on the back to the right. For $8.65 you get to pick out all the stuff you want, no limit, but I do think they go my total weight, so like if you pick 2 meats, you get less of each one, still generous with the stuff you pick though. We just filled out the little forms, circling what we wanted. They even offered shrimp for no extra cost. You won't get that in any Chinese restaurant! I got shrimp for my protein and the chef put a ton of it in! My friend had a combo of chicken and shrimp. We watched as the chef tossed our stuff in the air in the wok. They run induction burners, so no giant flames ... prob a good thing inside a hospital! Our food is served in to go boxes, no plates here. Wow, the food was super scrumptious, I liked our selection of ingredients. I'd say with this wok stir fry station open now, get yourself over here and have lunch. It starts at 11 am. $8.65 with no tax is way cheaper than any Chinese restaurant these days!

You won't believe this, but it was inside the Carson Tahoe Regional Hospital. One of the best places to get an outstanding meal!

Every now and then I have one of those where have I been moments?…read moreWell, today was one of those times. I was at a plaza, not far from where San Marcos Grill is located. We were hungry and decided we wanted Mexican food. We've been really tired of the place we've been visiting as we are regulars there. We've been really wanting to try something new and I remembered there was a place down the street from the plaza we were at. San Marcos Grill is not very hard to find. It's just off the main drag going through Carson City on Winnie Lane. We pulled in to the parking lot and I have to be honest. My first thought was wow I hope this place is good. Because I had my doubts being in a strip mall. But you never know unless you try. So we walked, and I was amazed, how awesome this place looked I'm talking very festive, very clean. Tables were well spaced out. The lady greeted us immediately and pointed us to a table where we could sit at. She was there taking our drink orders very quickly. As we sat and looked over the menu, I could not get over the size and beauty of the bar that they have in this establishment. Complete with a great selection of any kind of drink, you could possibly want also TVs that are spaced around the establishment so if you want to watch a sport event, there's not a bad seat anywhere in the restaurant. After looking over the menu, our server came to our table was a very nice young lady and took our orders. My wife chose the beef enchiladas, and a taquito, which comes with rice and beans As I always do with a new establishment, I chose the Carnitas plate. I am a Carnitas aficionado and I always try everyone's Carnitas to see if they are legit. As we're waiting for our food, I noticed an older gentleman who was just helping everybody, come to find out he is the owner. I do not know his name, but he's very friendly guy and very warm and welcoming. As I said, the establishment is very spacious and clean. The bathroom was even clean, so it was a real joy to be there, even though we were waiting on our food, which did not take very long. My wife ordered a margarita that she really liked and I just had a Modelo with a lime. The gentleman I just told you about who I think is the owner brought our food to us and it looked amazing. Needless to say, we dug right into our food and I could not get over how great these Carnitas tasted. Not everyone can make really good Carnitas, they're either dry or they're cooked too long to were they are too crispy. These are so tender and flavorful. I enjoyed every bite. My plate came with rice in a small bowl of beans, a garnish of avocado, sour cream and pico. It also came with very hot corn tortillas The tortillas, however we're spoiled and tasted really old. In fact, you can smell how old they were. I let our server know, but it was no big deal because I had tortilla chips still on the table. She offered to get me some new tortillas, but it was fine because I only use the tortilla to kind of put my food onto the fork. So the tortilla chips worked just fine. I kept trying to eat the Carnitas slowly because I was savoring it so much. I did not want to hurry and be done with the meal too fast. This was our first visit here, and I can tell you that we will be back and probably become regulars. The staff here is very wonderful welcoming and I cannot recommend this place high enough to anyone that wants a great place to eat really great Mexican food. Kudos to the staff.!
