Tonight we came out to Js for my husband's birthday. The restaurant was clean, dimly lit, and fairly loud. Our waitress was good but not one of our favorites. Our waters were never filled and our non-alcoholic beverage drinkers were never checked on to see if their drinks were ok/wanted something else/need anything. She also only checked on us 1x right after the food was dropped off to see if we needed freshly ground pepper and not again until it was time for desert and the check. For appetizers we had the Thai Scallops and the special Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus. The Thai Scallops are one of our go-tos and they were good; however, they were pretty heavily breaded tonight. The Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus was good but was hard to eat and could have used a bit more cooking. For my main I had the linguine and clams. I was HIGHLY disappointed in this tonight. The noodles were delicious and beautifully done but the "sauce" was nothing but pasta water. There was flavor: no garlic, no butter, no clams-no flavor whatsoever. The clams were also macerated as if someone chewed them up and spit them in the dish for me. My husband had the ribeye with gorgonzola butter and polenta. Everything was cooked beautifully and seasoned perfectly but his chunk of butter (his favorite) was so frozen it never melted-even by the end of the meal. For desert, my husband had the bread pudding and we had the crème brûlée. My husband said the bread pudding was good but slightly dry and cold. The crème brûlée was horrible. We sent it back and got "oh sorry someone new made them-big fail" and laughing. The brûlée was not even close to being set so it was pure liquid. It wasn't even a consistent temperature. After years of loving eating at Js and celebrating milestones here it makes me sad to see how quality is slipping. read more

A good friend of mine has been bragging about how good J's was for a few years now so we decided to give it a go for my birthday. This is not a recommendation but a must try! We had a reservation on a Thursday night so seating was easy and highly recommended. The service was friendly and spot on. The ambiance was wonderful, very well thought with an interesting history worth reading about when you go. The food was a real treat and we are looking forward to experiencing J's again soon. read more

This place is dddeelicious! We got invited to a birthday dinner here. Our server went above and beyond for us-- she was so nice and made sure we had everything we needed. The Caesar salad was crispy and full of flavor. The Caesar dressing was made to perfection. I ordered the scallops served over angel hair pasta and mushrooms. Holy crap---one of the BEST pastas I've had. The flavor was amazing. We also ordered the evening special of a ribeye with an herbed butter. Again-- delicious and cooked to perfection. Everything was fresh and you could taste the quality ingredients. We splurged and got dessert too. I would highly recommend this place whenever you are looking for a great meal! Amazing find in Northern Nevada! I was absolutely blown away by the quality of food and the amount of food I received here. Despite being more of an upscale restaurant, they were very accommodating for someone who did not have a reservation. They were able to find me a table easily, no wait needed. Everyone was kind and attentive during my time there. I ordered the calamari Parmesan, not knowing how it would taste. The mix between a chicken Parmesan-sort of flavor and the chewiness and texture of calamari really blend well together with this dish. I found myself really loving everything about it. On top of that, the portion size was incredibly large. I never have leftovers, but here, I had a bit of the dish left to take home and enjoy for the next day. Parking might be a little hard to come by, so I would prepare to street park if their lot is full. read more

My friend had been here before and recommended it as were in the area. It's a cute restaurant in Old Town Dayton. I didn't end up taking photos regrettably so. I will say right off that the service was excellent. The wine we ordered was a Red Zinfandel , it was quite good. We considered an appetizer, but felt it would be filling and be too much since we were set on desert after our meal. So anyway, on to our meals. My friend had basically decided that she was going to order the Calamari steak, not commonly found on a lot of menus. She ordered the Calamari Piccata ( they have a choice of three different ways ). She chose the one done in a lemon caper sauce served over pasta with vegetable which was Zucchini and yellow squash, really great job on this vegetable, cooked perfectly, better than any I've had elsewhere. She gave me a taste of the calamari steak and I must say it was yummy. I ordered the ravioli three ways, meat, cheese and spinach and I chose it with an Alfredo sauce, the other choice was bolognese and I honestly wish I had chosen it instead of the Alfredo. Very rich sauce and I'm not convinced the ravioli tasted homemade, but I finished every last one of the ravioli. Oh, I forgot a salad was served before and it was one of the best Caesar salads I've tasted, rich and flavorful. We finished our meals and ordered two deserts which we shared. The tiramisu and the crème brûlée. Both very good, but the tiramisu was topped off with chocolate and whipped cream which added too much to the already rich desert . The Crème Brûlée we decided was our favorite. Overall, we had a nice meal and the staff was very nice and attended us very well. So, if ever in Dayton try this great spot, J's Old Town Bistro. read more

5 stars for the food, the ambience, the chef but I give it 1 star because of multiple times this same member of the dark haired waitress, has been rude to the women at the table and paid inappropriate attention to the men at the table only...to increase her tip no doubt. My husband and I have eaten there many times with different couples and we had the misfortune to get this waitress and she does the same thing every time. This last time was the 5th time and that's enough. what kind of place has someone like this working there. read more

Everything about this place was so warm and welcoming and also very charming. Definitely as local as it gets and the food was absolutely amazing. The staff is very attentive and friendly, especially my waitress who I met along my journey. If I could give 10 stars I would. We have been in Northern Nevada for 3 years. Made a reservation, got there 10 minutes early and were immediately seated by the very friendly hostess. A friend and I went here last night and when I tell you that every bite of food was just mindblowingly delicious, I'm not exaggerating. We ordered the House Chips, Wasabi scallops for appetizers, and we were both in heaven. His ribeye was cooked to perfection, and I made my own pizza with their prosciutto; then we split (fought over lol) the creme brulee. It was ALL amazing, even their drink special!! Chris was an amazing server, to boot. Superb service, friendly, funny. Next time I go back I'll be asking if he's on shift. He made an already wonderful dining experience into absolute perfection. Get started with things like Fried Brussel Sprouts served with pancetta, balsamic glaze and Parmesan cheese or Italian Egg Rolls filled with sausage, roasted red pepper, mozzarella & carmelized onions served with marinara. If you aren't full after these tasty teasers, move on to the main course. I love good steak. J's Filet Mignon and the Gorgonzola Top Sirloin, Baseball Cut are my very favorites. Always done to perfection, the chef knows what they are doing! I would love to try the Lamb Shank on my next visit, but I haven't eaten my share of J's steak fare yet. The menu is nicely balanced with something delicious for everyone. The servers are very attentive and check up on your table to make sure your dining experience is stress free. This is a great place to hang out in Old Town Dayton NV! Having traveled highway 50 a few times, I've stopped in similar old towns to get my highway 50 passport stamped, and for the most part, great food is not part of the experience. Got the opportunity to have dinner for a friends birthday last night. Reservations were at 6:30 for 6. We arrived about 5-7 minutes early and was seated almost immediately. Briea our server greeted us in a timely manner asking if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered a Bottle of Wine and a few beer. We recently had our first meal here and I was more than happy with it. We got there around 5:45 on a Saturday night, rolling the dice without a reservation. We were able to get a table in the bar area which was perfect. It was right next to the window so we could look out. Our server was the bartender and she was superb. All our food was correct, she checked on us, everything was timed properly. Overall outstanding service. The food itself was awesome. We had clams to start which were delicious and friend artichokes. They were crispy on the outside and soft inside. The breading flavor was great. For me, the Caesar salad was a 10, it was one of the best I've ever had! I got the filet mignon with Gorgonzola sauce, other than being a tiny bit over cooked (not too much) it was excellent. We even had dessert and I left there feeling like a blimp literally. I ate most of everything because well it was just that good. We really enjoyed our experience and more importantly loved the food. We will back soon. read more

This was the first time we've been to Js since 2013. Surprised is the best word to describe our experience. Since Js is an Italian restaurant my test would be the Veal Marsala. Many so-called Italian restaurants fail the Veal marsala entrée The calamari appetizer is different than most offerings because they include the tentacles as well. The 'small' Ceasar Salad was perfectly sized and the anchovies were a plus. My Veal Marsala was perfectly prepared. My wife had the Chicken Cordon Blue. Both entrees were absolutely perfect. The vegetables and pasta were also well executed. Reservations helped and our server Kim was truly exceptional. Of course if you call yourself an Italian restaurant you'd better have cannoli and they do. Another home run as the cannoli and Creme Brule finished off a superb meal. A bit of travel for this wonderfully surprising treat in the pretty little town of Dayton. I met with friends for a birthday dinner. The outside is vintage Comstock, old west Nevada. The inside is beautiful Italian bistro. We got there when it opened and luckily had reservations. This place fills up, even the bar. Very reasonably priced and great portions of delicious pasta, seafood, and other traditional Italian dishes. Great service and great food. I did not take pictures of the food as I was caught up in the celebration, but I cleared my plates! Starter was the wasabi scallops; very nice, but I expected a bit more kick of flavor. My main dish was the chef's special linguini with sausage and a spiced cream sauce. It was amazing. Dinner was served with a choice of soup or salad and delicious garlic bread. I opted for the salad and it was very good. I would have loved more bread, but then I would not have been able to eat all of my pasta...it was a better choice. This was definitely worth the trip. We walked around a bit after dinner and stopped for an after dinner drink around the corner at another great, vintage spot. Fun evening in Dayton for sure. read more

A surprise date night with the hubby, and such a cute place for it. Off the main road, this is a quaint gem for Dayton. The staff was friendly, helpful, and had great recommendations. Everything tasted delicious too. I had the sausage and fettuccini in a mushroom cream sauce. The sauce was lighter than Alfredo which was nice. There berry mojito was muddled to perfection, fresh and delightful! I asked for lightly dressed Caesar salad and it couldn't have been more perfect! Our server thought to bring a little extra dressing just in case! Better to go too light than too heavy! She's so right! My hubby enjoyed his lasagna and house salad. I stole his veggies and a bite of his salad. Nice too! The white chocolate raspberry martini was a perfect desert. And so was the chocolate lava cake, even the cannoli was tasty, although I'd probably try the tiramisu next time. It looked great at a nearby table. Food is really good, the down side, it's hard to get in or make a reservation, they reserve tables for awhile even though no one is sitting there. I was able to get in and sit at the bar prior to another reservation coming in. I was there a little over an hour and no one was seated a quite a few of the tables. Another time, there was a reservation on a table, this couple came in, sat down, ordered a drink then left. I think it could be run more efficiently to serve more people and less headaches trying to get in and eat. read more

We will definitely be back next time we're in town visiting my in laws. The service is a little slower but as long as you aren't starving when you arrive, you'll be okay. Yessssss please!!!! This place is amazing!!! My first time here and when I saw the selection on the "small plates" section, I decided it was a Tapas kind of night!!! We had the Brussels spouts (my fiancé said these were his fav), grilled to perfection and seasoned beautifully! We also had the Caprese salad, meatballs, and my favorite.... The beef tips. Everything was super delish!! Our server was the best part of the night, as was the rest of the super friendly staff. They really made us feel they were happy we were there. They even wrapped up our food for us to take home and when I got home there were cute little notes written in the boxes. A++++++ customer service. Our table of three was very pleased with our entrees and the service . The ribeye was cooked perfectly, the Chicken Marsala was delicious. The service was great. The only problem (and a deal breaker) was the noise level. We could not communicate with each other nor the server.
