I have always been a huge fan of breads and bakeries and often find myself browsing through the bread selections at a random bakery. So what sets Duke Bakery apart from the other well-known bakeries is that Duke uses a combination of the Japanese soft and fluffy bread technique along with the European yeast and firmer bread baking style to get the breads that you see on their shelves. (Although personally I see more of the European styled breads, which is why I appreciate the bakery.) Another thing that sets Duke apart is that they offer significant sized samples of bread - if you come right when the bakery opens, you'll find samples of everything! One of the main reasons I love Duke Bakery is that the quality of bread is amazing. With other bakeries, sometimes I still feel pretty hungry after scarfing down a selection, but because of the yeast that goes into the bread, you get a substantial bite that fills you up. I've tried most of the bread selections and really enjoy almost all of them - strawberry cream cheese, Chinese wolfberry, Hokkaido mixed bean toast are some of my favorites. Prices vary from around $3-5. I even purchased the durian bread ($6! but worth it, according to my friend). Their cakes are tasty, too - I tried the tiramisu and ended up buying a slice. It had just the right amount of sweetness as the amount of cocoa powder on top balanced out the sweetness of the dessert. And if you become a VIP member, you get 10% off purchases each time you visit the store. I've been in the bakery several Saturdays right when it opens and that's when you can load up on samples and get the bread right when it comes out of the oven. This Duke Bakery is located in the UPS and USPS plaza on Duarte - parking lot is small, but generally parking isn't too hard. Visited on Christmas day and the store was pretty empty. Only two racks of bread were available and there was 1 worker in the store. I got the matcha red bean, sesame, and mixed nuts breads to try and was pleasantly surprised at how fresh and fluffy they tasted. Matcha red bean was definitely the favorite. Pricing is a bit high for the area at $4 per bread but their use of ingredients is better as well. Parking is easy to find since it has its own lot. read more

The portion sizes of these pastries are enormous. I may have tried several if it weren't for the fact that these were all atleast 3 servings each. I purchased 2- one savory, the other sweet. The matcha pastry was absolutely awful. While it looked beautiful, it was undercooked in the middle and incredibly bitter. I unfortunately had to throw it away as it was inedible. The savory one was a double cheese one and was better, but not eye popping. The labels weren't clear. So, if you have any dairy/nut allergy, avoid this place like the plague. There was a cheese bread that clearly has dairy in it, but the placard said it contained no dairy or nuts. That's a huge red flag. I gave this place a solid chance, and it was not impressive and unfortunately, I will never come back. The Bakery was rather low in stock, but it seems I had a pretty good choice of pastries and desserts. Everything is packed in plastic already and soft to the touch, meaning a nice fluffy texture and savory in some cases. The cashier was rather uninterested and did not promote anything in particular. Duke Bakery is conveniently located near the Post Office and UPS. I wanted to try a new bakery around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. If you love bread, this is the place for you as they have essentially bread for purchase. It didn't help that the lady at the register did not speak English either, so I was relying on my pointing skills for selecting desserts behind the counter. Their "shopping carts" are clearly not sanitized, so I suggest you not use them while in the store. They didn't have any trays or tongs for you to pick up the baked merchandise. They did have a slice of cheesecake and mango mousse cake for purchase, although they only had one of each available. I have to say that this place doesn't have much selection as far as pastries and desserts so I'd avoid this place in the future. read more

Came here at around 5:30pm and there was almost nothing left. Food: I got the pork floss bread, garlic soft bread, french sausage bread, and coffee forest bread. I think my favorite would have to be the pork floss bread. I didn't even know it was pork floss at first when I looked at it in the store but it has pork floss inside instead of on top like usual! I actually really liked that it was inside and it was very delicious. The garlic soft bread was ok since there was only garlic on top in the middle but the bread was quite soft. The sausage bread was also ok - there were two sausages in the middle. I thought the coffee forest bread would be a bit chocolatey but it wasn't lol -- if you like coffee though it definitely tastes like it but in bread form. The price point is a bit more expensive than other bakeries but the breads are big so I think it's worth the price. This bakery is totally a hidden gem! I found out that all of the breads were really got. However, in my opinion, the Parmesan Cheesecake is the star of the show. They use real Parmesan on on top of the cake adding the complexity to the cake texture. The cake itself is fluffy and light, definetely one of a kind! Hubby found a new bakery and came home with a cream cheese and raisin bread. It was delicious and we decided to visit again the week after. We normally go to other Asian bakeries in the area, not sure why we've never tried this one. The price is definitely higher here than other Asian bakeries, however you do get what you pay for. Each of these bread is $4-5 but it will serve 2 people or you can save half for another meal. On our 2nd visit I really liked the pork floss bread.  At other Asian bakeries you get a thin layer of pork sung on the top, but here at Duke's you get some in every bite! I also got the Matcha red bean bread, I ate 2/3 of it for breakfast the next day and I was not even hungry for lunch. read more

I'm low-key obsessed with some of Duke Bakery's bread. My favorites are the matcha bread and chocolate buns. The fillings are delicious. The bread is moist, and I love the stretchy yeast texture. I just kind of wish they weren't so huge, but that's my personal preference. I also like the convenience of the mini shopping carts. I don't have to worry about dropping my pile of bread from a tray because it's safe inside the basket. Tips: Definitely go earlier in the day to make sure most of the selection are still available. I made the mistake of going in late afternoon and they already sold out of the matcha bread. Also, there's a minimum charge for credit cards, but you can go over it with just 2-3 bread. read more

My favorite bakery for Chinese pastries. Great variety of flavors to try. I always make a stop when I'm in socal. The portion size is huge though. Not fun if you're the type to sample a bunch at a time. They do say to keep refrigerated or in the freezer if you don't plan on eating same day, but definitely changes the texture. read more

They have some breads/buns that other bakeries don't have. We love the strawberry cream bread, the banana cream bread and the mango mochi bun. The chocolate coffee bread with walnut is also good, but wish the coffee flavor is a bit stronger. Unlike other Chinese bakeries, their bread itself is less sweet, so when combined with sweet fillings, the sweet level overall is perfect for me. Haven't tried their savory breads since I can get that for less at other bakeries. Looking forward to some great inventions on the savory side, and I think they will be awesome. read more

I was in the area and decided to check out their bakery. The bakery has lots of breads displayed in closed cases with samples of each variety of bread. Each sample was fresh and soft after I took a bite. The ingredients are listed for each bread. Some bread has low sugar or no eggs or use butter. I have been wanting to try Duke Bakery for so long and it did not disappoint. They specialize in fluffy bread that is low in sugar and fat. These kind of bread have become really popular in China but much harder to come by here. They list the ingredients for the breads and they are actually very well priced. I tried the Sesame bread and the Chocolate and Blueberry Mt Coffee Bread. Both were delicious and still soft the next day especially if you pop it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. One of my favorite bakeries. For those that haven't visited this store, it isn't your typical Chinese bakery. It sells breads that are significantly larger, less greasy, and tastes a lot healthier. Every bread has small samples that you can try and I must admit I've tried a few that I had no intention of buying. I've purchased at least 15 different kinds of flavors and liked them all. I can't say I like this kind of bakery over the greasier breads from JJ or 85 but it does provided a healthier alternative. Come on, how can you lack of flavor for coffee bread, durian bread and chocolate bread & oreo toast!!! First Impressions: Looks fancy, but really isn't. They pride themselves on making European style bread with flavors normally found in Asian bakeries but the lack of care and attention seems to seep through their customer service, presentation, and product quality. Service: They seemed to be short staffed during morning rushes. I understand customers making messes when picking their bread from the cabinets but that doesn't justify having staff sweeping the floor in front of open cabinets while the customers are picking out their bread. Even after covid, packaging is sloppy and it really just shows that the staff doesn't want to be there at all. Food: If you like a specific bread here, don't expect for it to be the same all the time. Having shopped here a few times, I have noticed that they do little to no quality control. One customer I had witnessed brought back a pack of toast that they had purchased that morning because it smelled sour. The staff's response was that the toast was fermenting and that it would still be safe to eat. On another occasion, I noticed that in the cabinet for one specific kind of bread, some seemed burnt while some seemed pale or undercooked. When I asked the staff about it, they responded saying that when they bake it, those closer to the bottom of the oven tend to be darker while the ones higher up in the oven are paler. This place is gonna get real busy real fast. Cons: -There are mini shopping carts in the store for your breads instead of trays. Really? I understand that some of the breads are big and heavy, but it's going to cause a nightmare of a mess trying to get breads. There were only 4 people in the store and I felt crammed around the breads already -Bread will be bagged at the counter into fancy paper bags. This will definitely slow down each transaction. -The parking lot isn't that big. -Many items contain walnuts or share a shelf with items that have walnuts. Warning for those with nut allergies.
